I'd argue that Smith, the Titans OC, isn't simply a flavor of the month coordinator. He started out in 2007 and has worked up the ranks with experience on defense and offense. Now if Payton somehow became available, he'd instantly become my top candidate.

    Eric Bienemy and Brian Daboll.

Bienemy comes froms the Reid tree, the most successful current coaching tree in the NFL. Andy Reid gets his guys ready to coach.

Daboll is coach of the year so far on offense for what he is doing with Josh Allen. Allen almost always has his first read wide open thanks to Daboll which helps cover up Allen's slow processing of the field.

Though Gase is here now I think it's worth to start looking at who we might look at for next season. Between the typical candidates mentioned and ones linked to Douglas I'll try to compile a list of others I am hearing.

    Ones mentioned

    1. Bieniemy
    2. Martindale
    3. Salehi

    New to the List:
    1. Kafka qb coach KC
    2. Siranni OC Colts
    3. Eberflus DC Colts
    4. Roman OC Ravens
    5. Daboll OC Bills
    6. Leftwhich OC Bucs

    Names to Watch
    1. Joe Brady OC Panthers
    2. Mike McDaniel run game coordinator San Fran brother of Matt HC in Green Bay
    3. Kellen Moore OC Dallas
    4. Arthur Smith OC Titans
    5. Dave Taub Special Teams Chiefs

Will the first three come here? Martindale only one linked to Douglas. Kafka and Siranni overlapped with Douglas I think in Philadelphia.

Ones I'd be interersted in are Daboll, Brasy, McDaniel, Smith and Taub. There'll be many rumors but fun to start looking. 13 more weeks. Be nice to have the number 1 pick ton of free agent money and a good young coach.

Why start another thread on this? We already had a thread: https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/who-should-be-coach-in-2021.94271/

I hope the Jets have no interest in Kafka. He may be a good QB Coach, but at a minimum, their candidate should have been either a successful OC or DC in the NFL, and optimally, have HC experience in the NFL or College to boot.

The only place I've seen Saleh mentioned was on this site.

I think the only candidates should be the following list below, and that list is probably too long. Get too many candidates and it doesn't show serious interest in any one, and some will perhaps get hired elsewhere or lose interest and withdraw their name. I think the Jets should query Harbaugh's, Riley's, and Matt Campbell's agents first and see if they have any interest. If none of them are interested, I think the top candidates should be Bieniemy, Daboll, Roman, Monken and Martindale.

    Former NFL HCs
    Jim Harbaugh
Josh McDaniels (EDIT: REMOVE FROM CONSIDERATION)

    NFL Coordinators
    Eric Bieniemy
    Brian Daboll
    Greg Roman
Todd Monken (he was also HC at Southern Miss.)
    Arthur Smith
    Byron Leftwich
    Don Martindale
    Robert Saleh

    College HCs
    Lincoln Riley
    Matt Campbell
    David Shaw

    I’d rank them

    1. Matt Campbell
    2. Lincoln Riley
    3. Jim Harbaugh
    4. Bienemy
    5. Daboll
    6. Smith
    7. Roman
    8. Martindale

1-3 I see as highly unlikely and unrealistic. The rest are interchangeable and will depend on the interview process but can get behind any of them. I’d also add Sirianni to the list and he’d slot somewhere ahead of Wink.

Just on opinion alone, I would not consider McDaniels AT ALL, but that’s probably a moot point as I can’t imagine he’d ever consider the Jets...but he’s already failed...and also proven to be a major dick with his Indy stunt...and of course, there’s also the little nugget that not a single damn Belichick coach has been good...not a one. I don’t understand why people can’t see that that team is ALL about Belichick...none of those assistants do jack shit without Belichick pulling all the strings. For such a great coach, it’s mind boggling how he has generated literally NO successful HCs. So yeah, full PASS on him

also not sold on Bienemy...until proven otherwise, he is just another OC riding the coattails of a great HC and a generational QB...he’ll have to get a shot somewhere to prove otherwise, but with our track record, I don’t want to be the training ground....we’ve done it time and time again with Herm, Mangini, Rex, Bowles....we suck at it. So yeah, PASS here as well.

I agree that #s 1-3 are probably unrealistic, but we have to ask.

Why don't you like Todd Monken? He was willing to come to the Jets last year before Gase was hired. He's doing a great job a UGA as OC. He has been a good, creative OC in the NFL, and has at least some HC experience at Southern Mississippi, so he wouldn't be a complete novice to HC as the rest of the coordinators would be.

I forgot to add Arthur Smith, but he concerns me a little because he's had so little experience as an OC.

I understand and agree on McDaniels. I just listed him because he has experience as a HC and is a successful coordinator. I agree that he's a dick, likely wouldn't come here (would probably do the same thing he did to Indy just to jerk us around), and I wouldn't want him. I'm going to remove his name.

You said who you don't like. I'm curious, who do you like and think would be a good, possibly great HC for us?

I don’t like dipping into the colleges ranks there’s more failure than success stories there. Those guys win by recruiting more than anything else. You don’t get that luxury in the pros.
    My top 3 would be
    Bienemy
    Leftwich
    Martindale
If I was betting I would go heavy on Roman though, due to the raven connection with JD.

Monken was more an oversight on my part. I did like him quite a bit last time but it does worry me that he didn’t get a job two years ago when he was the hot coordinator, that gives me concern that he didn’t interview well and now has fallen out of the spotlight.

I’d probably rank him behind the other OCs at this point but I was very intrigued by his offensive mind last time.

I'm going to wait until they actually get rid of the current occupant until I spend any time fantasizing about anyone else.

I don't know for certain why Monken didn't get a job elsewhere, but I think it was because it was late in the process when the Jets hired Gase. Up until that time, it was going to be Matt Rhule as HC and Monken as OC, so I think it may have been because the other teams thought that was a done deal, and decided to look elsewhere. Then Rhule opted out at the last minute, which left Monken out of the Jets OC job.

Monken inherited an awful team at Southern Miss. His first year they went 1-11. The second year improved to 3-9, and his third year they went 9-5 (7-1 in conference play) and they won their division. He left to take the OC job with the Bucs.

If I was the guy in charge of making the selection I would weigh heavily on the following three questions to narrow my decision:
    1) Who will be your selection for OC and QB coach to provide the best improvement and success plan of our QBs, either Sam or tbd rookie
    2) Based on our past history, why do you think you can turn this franchise into a winner. Provide me with four or five key accomplishments in your career that can give me confidence you can bring to this team a winning identity.
    3) What is your assessment of our current personnel talent level and what IMMIDIATE help would you need from the GM to make this team RESPECTABLE in year one?
    BONUS question
Do you have the fortitude and temperament to deal with the NY "snake in the grass media" and the most heart broken, pissed off, and disappointed fans in the NFL

I'd be ok with any of the following:

    Experienced HC's(Pro and College):

    Harbaugh
    Riley
    Shaw
    Campbell

    Coordinators:
    Daboll
    Smith
    Bieniemy
    Saleh
    Martindale

    Assistant HC's:
    Staley

I have a few suggestions even if my opinion won't matter.
    1. Don't hire based on what a coach's specialty is. A good HC needs to manage all 3 facets, not 1.
    2. Cast a wide net and don't limit the choices to organizations Douglas has been in.
    3. Hire an experienced HC only if he has a track record of success.
    4. Hire a coordinator only if he is willing to oversee all 3 facets as mentioned above. This will be risky, but other teams have found success(Packers, Rams, 49ers, Eagles). I guess it's a good bet the HC will succeed if he's from the Shanahan or Reid tree lol.

I vote for Kafka. Anyone who has watched this team over the years can attest to its Kafkaesque history:

"His work fuses elements of realism and the fantastic.[4] It typically features isolated protagonists facing bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensible socio-bureaucratic powers. It has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity"

Excellent questions!!! I would add the following questions:

4)Do you see yourself as creative and/or an innovator? If so, why (give examples of things you've done)? If not, why?

    5) Do you see yourself as aggressive or conservative? Give examples to support your answer. If he answers conservative, thank him for coming in and show him the door.

    6) What would you do if you had 4th down and 2 at your opponents 38 yard line in the 4th Qtr. with 10-12 minutes left in the game, and either trailed by two points? Then ask hum the same question but this time with him having a one point lead. If he answers kick a FG to either question, move on to the next candidate.

    7) In line with Herndonfan's comments, I'd ask him if he planned to oversee/coach/care about all three units.
