not true. after the regular season ends - December 29th - his team can negotiate and sign him long term before FA. --- however, Clowney has almost a no-trade clause and leverage. He doesn't have to sign the franchise tender. If Houston and Buffalo worked out a trade he could just come out and say he doesn't want to play for Buffalo so he won't sign the franchise tender with them either. Then the Bills would be fucked so they wouldn't make the trade. Clowney (or his agent really) could also tell teams looking to acquire him that he won't sign the tag unless the team guarantees they won't franchise tag him again in 2020. then sign the tag for 2019 once they agree to that, ensuring that he gets a long term deal either way - after the regular season with them or in free agency. most likely though, the scenario FJF cited is what's gonna happen. He's gonna get traded to a team that has a backroom, handshake, wink wink deal on a long(er) term contract with him as soon as the season ends. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...ey-conundrum-and-what-his-end-game-should-be/.
If they start trading for and paying guys like this then say re-sign Leonard Williams for big bucks ... There's only so much big money to go around.
1. Salary cap can and will be manipulated to fit whoever you want,if you really want them. 2. There’s no sense speculating on cap problems past 2020 until a new cba is reached. There are likely to be some changes
i can kind of digest the cap ramifications because you can structure contracts in ways to make it work. my real question is trade compensation?
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...tP0r0Uyrb_uT8rhemKmOfbG5oov5mFFe9KMtCeWQuE4rM The Houston Texans have discussed a potential trade revolving around outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney with several teams across the league, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle. Those teams that the Texans have reached out to include the Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and New York Jets. Wilson does note that nothing has advanced substantially with any of those teams. This all comes as Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports that Clowney, who has yet to sign his $15.967 million tender, is hurt by the fact that the Texans are even fielding these trade calls and not trying tor each a long-term extension. Garafolo reports that this frustration on Clowney's part could lead to the linebacker dragging this out into the regular season. If Clowney were to not sign his tender and miss out on regular-season games, he'd be missing out on game checks that would be nearly $1 million per-week. Houston recently allowed Clowney to meet with the Dolphins head coach Brian Flores as Miami is widely viewed as the favorite to land his services. The snag in that potential marriage is that Clowney isn't exactly jazzed up to play for a non-contender like the Dolphins. Wilson notes his preferred destinations are the Seahawks or Eagles. The Redskins, meanwhile, aren't considered a real destination and they are unwilling to part with left tackle Trent Williams, per Wilson. Clowney recently fired his longtime agent Bus Cook as his situation has gone increasingly more haywire. Wilson says that Clowney is being pursued by several top agents, but also isn't ruling out the possibility of representing himself. Whenever and with whoever Clowney comes to terms on a contract, the 26-year-old will still be considered one of the better pass rushers in the league as he totaled 47 tackles in 2018 to go along with nine sacks and 21 quarterback hits.
no more than a 3rd rounder......if this season plays out like i think - our first and second round picks next year will be worth a bunch.
Oh my God. The Texans don't have a GM and Clowney doesn't have an agent. It doesn't get better than that. this is an IDEAL, rare chance at getting Clowney's services for cheap
At this point I am worried about the inevitable holdout inspired hamstring pull we see all too often.
None of that matters if Clowney doesn't want to be a Jet though. The Texans probably aren't taking less than a 2 or 3 (and they can get that because they know he wants to be in Miami) and we would be dumb to give up a 2 or a 3 without a wink wink nod nod deal from Clowney himself.
he would want to play for the NY Jets. this is New York, not Buffalo or Cleveland. We should start acting like that hell- he ain't gonna want to miss out on $1million per week anyway. Id bet he would sign the franchise tender in Siberia for that kind of money, he's just trying to use it as leverage a little now.
Judging by the reports that he wants to be in Miami, clearly the market and winning are not his top priorities. Warm weather and no taxes are. The New York market (especially when it's actually NJ) doesn't matter to some people at all.
What makes you think Clowney wants to be in Miami? He has said he doesn't want to play there because they aren't a contender. He wants to play for the Eagles or Seahawks.
Couldn't that be because that's the only team the Texans have given permission to speak with Clowney? Maybe Miami was the first team to contact the Texans and made them a good offer, and that's why the Texans allowed him to speak with the Dolphins.
No Idea, I can only assume he inquired on the asking price. Can't negotiate anything before he signs his tender. But between him saying they are going to explore every option including trade for Edge, multiple times in recent days and him inquiring about Clowney. It's pretty clear,at least in my opinion, that Douglas is looking at the possibility of a trade.
So hows it not true? I didn't go through the whole thing because I did in another post. He cant be signed this year. You'd be trading the picks or players or both for one guaranteed season and then a crap shoot. If I'm a player and cant sign until after the year, unless I fall in love with the Jets I'm going on the open market to start a bidding war. I'm not doing a wink, wink deal, it does nothing for me. You want to trade picks away for the chance to sign him?
Very well could be. I just feel like he wouldn't meet with them if he wasn't serious about playing for them. Who knows though, this situation is pretty unique. I can't remember a scenario like this ever. Bell's comes close but he wasn't going to be traded no matter what whereas with Clowney it seems like he's definitely getting traded.
Following is an article at The Jets Blog. It quotes the sportswriter from the Houston Chronicle, Aaron Wilson as saying that Clowney "is hesitant to play for Miami since he doesn't view them as a contender." I would think that Wilson has some inside information, but he could just be speculating or making crap up like Mehta. https://www.sny.tv/jets/news/jets-r...texans-about-jadeveon-clowney-trade/310392072 Jets reportedly one of five teams talking to Texans about Jadeveon Clowney trade Clowney has been holding out By Danny Abriano | 8:49AM With the Texans having made linebacker Jadeveon Clowney available, the Jets are one of five teams who have spoken with them about a potential trade, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Aside from the Jets, the Texans have also talked about Clowney with the Dolphins, Seahawks, Eagles, and Redskins, reports Wilson, who says nothing has advanced yet with any of those teams. While Clowney has been given permission to meet with the Dolphins, he is hesitant to play for Miami since he doesn't view them as a contender, reports Wilson. Clowney, 26, recently fired his agent, is refusing to sign his tender, and has been holding out -- and the holdout could last into the season if he isn't traded. Clowney is set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Acquiring Clowney -- who had 9.0 sacks last season -- would be huge for a Jets defense that recently lost Avery Williamson for the season. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano wrote earlier this week that Clowney is exactly what's missing from the Jets' playoff formula, urging GM Joe Douglas to swing a trade for the edge rusher.
