The best suggestion I've heard is to move the Redskins to London and name them the Redcoats. This way London gets a team, we lose the name and Patriots-Redcoats games become must watch television in both countries.

The last person I remember claiming that Vikings was racist was Soxxx, don't be a Soxxx.

And for those that want, here is the Red Privilege thread, http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/red-privilege.81124/

I've have got no problems with the changing of tribal or any ethnic names of teams. But people are using this social action as a way to feel empowered because they are angry at something else. If you go about censoring every team name because of a few yahoos, when does it become excessive?

Basically, I agree with your sentiment, but I think there are times where we need to stop being such insensitive clods and try to look at things from other's perspectives. For instance, if you were a Native American, you might feel VERY differently and care a great deal about an offensive, racist name. It's not just a matter of "toughening up" or not being "hyper sensitive." Yes, some people are too sensitive about some things, and in general, the minority shouldn't be able to make changes that affect or influence the majority, but there are times they should be able to. There are times when something is just wrong and people need to grow up/wise up and realize that some things are wrong and should be changed. This is one of those times. Sometimes the majority is dense, uncaring, or racist and are flat out wrong.

"Redskins" is racist and offensive, and I'm white. Our white race stole this country from the Native Americans, and have lied to them, cheated them, stolen from them throughout our nation's history, and we continue to do so. It's shameful and wrong and needs to stop. We enslaved the black race, lynched them, tried to keep them down, and they're still trying to recover from it. We treated the Chinese, Italians and Irish horribly when they immigrated to our country as well, so at least we're not just bastards to people of different skin colors. Americans need to wake the fuck up and have a dramatic change of heart regarding the way we as a country and as individuals treat others.

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever seen on an internet board and utter BS. Just because someone is offended doesn't mean that they are weak, it means they want to be treated with the respect that they deserve. You really are a cretin.

Again, utter BS. The term is racist and if you have a brain or aren't just a damn liar, you know it is. Indians were called that throughout the 19th century and probably the 18th century as well. Have you ever watched any westerns from the 1950s and 1960s? The term "redskins" was used frequently in the context of "dirty murdering redskins!" and "those redskins are a bunch ignorant savages." The only reason anyone talks about skin color is a means of denigration, of putting those with the different skin color down, and looking down on them as if they are inferior, lesser humans, and ignorant "savages."

Well you're replying to my comment so I guess you disagree with it. Seems like that's the only time you reply to something I post.

And I'm the cretin? For what? Having an opinion that's different than your safe/bias one? Good stuff.

Thought you had me on ignore?

Do me a favor and put me there again cause nothing you've ever replied to me about has been worth reading.

I also have to eat some crow. I didn't say anything that wasn't true but he has really made the transition to a great QB. Or soon to be. Aikman made a great point last night when he said that Cousins tried to do too much in his few appearances with RG3 locked in as the starter because he knew he had to impress the staff in order to take over for RG3. Now that he can just sit back and play the way he knows how to play the game he doesn't make any mistakes, he sees the field, he really looks like a great QB. It's too bad the defense and O-Line didn't give him any help. I love Fitz but I wouldn't mind if we went after him this offseason, he's a perfect fit here and could get us to the Superbowl next season. But there's no way the Redskins let him walk.

I'm sure that plan would go over really well in D.C.

The problem is most of the people that act indignant about the Redskin name aren't actually offended by it themselves. And the majority of people in 2010 just don't associate the Redskin name with Indians, they associate it with a football team.

To me the reality is that not many people in this country would even know about American Indians if it wasnt for the Redskins football team..and maybe the casinos. You ask any teenage kid in this country what they associate the American Indians with and more than half would say the Washington Redskins.

And I doubt a lot of American Indians even give a shit about the name. They care about the publicity that comes with bringing something like this up in this politically correct world. If they were silently getting a piece of revenue Im sure they would drop this "issue" pretty quickly.

Alas, I guess you are correct sir. In matters of bigotry, there is actual pain. Calling the black man nigger or boy goes beyond annoyance and causes actual pain. The same is true for Redskin, especially to American Indians still feeling the pain of oppression. In these matters we are in agreement.

What pisses me off is how quick politicians, schools, and businesses are to become sterile so as not to 'offend' someone. Seems like every day something that's been around forever is taken down / removed / painted over because it offended someone. So many groups are so terrified of 'offending' even one person our society is becoming very bland.

    Merry Christmas NC.

Sorry, I mean Happy Holidays ;)

you really think people don't know who the native americans are in this country? we might be getting dumber as a society sure, but we aren't that dumb.

"sir, did you know there were people living here prior to European settlement"
"huh? oh... you mean like the washington redskins?" LOL

Do I think the average high school student/person in their 20's is that dumb? Yes.

You'd be surprised how many people in this country dont know American history. We've all been taught European history up the ass in school with about 10 percent of US history sprinkled in.

So it really shouldn't be that surprising.
