We wouldn't be having this discussion if the team was the Nashville N*ggers or The Kalamazoo K*kes or the Washington W*ps. Nicknames based on disparaging ethnic descriptions are not acceptable in modern day America. Leaving the R*dskins grandfathered in is not appropriate at this point.

Why did this come up now?

Why did Equal Rights for Women become an issue 40 years ago?

Why did the end of Jim Crow in the South happen in the 50's and 60's?

Why does anything ever come up like this?

90% of native americans aren't bothered by the name. How gay we've become as a society.

 

It's a really odd situation though - Native Americans in my recollection are the only race of people ever to have any major teams (pro, collegiate) in this country named after them, and there were many teams not so long ago.

Might have been inappropriate, but they were used as a symbol of power over their opponents.

90% of 768 native Americans reachable by land line 10 years ago weren't bothered by the name. Go look at at all the tribal resolutions since then. They have overwhelmingly favored asking the Redskins to change the name.

Times change. Women's Suffrage was seen as a nutty idea by the majority of Americans a generation before it became: " oh, of course, how silly of us to have thought that way."

 

Were they really bothered? Or did they want reparations?

If most native Americans truly have issues with the name I can get on board with it being changed. I find it very suspicious that they would have done a 180 on there stance bit things can happen.

My guess is that this is driven by the vocal minority

Whether the team should change the name or not has already been argued to death on here in other threads. This thread is about our fucking bureaucracy of a government yet again involving their sniveling ass stained noses in things that are none of their business and insignificant in comparison to every other problem this country has that is either ignored or exacerbated by them.
