Being able to make the playoffs twice when he was handed a great team on a silver platter? He didn't botch that one. Not sure if that's giving him credit but it would have been more impressive (or impressive period) if he started out slow and after 4-5 years made the playoffs twice, and built the type of team he was handed by Mangini. Then you could say he did something, he built something, he's a great HC. Belichick, Cowher etc. didn't start out winning super bowls, the success came later on when they put their stamp on the team. But with Rex it was the exact opposite. He's a chump. You'll see the same thing happen with the Bills again.
Mangenious was supposed to be that and... Rex got us to 2 Championship games but clearly the team was sleepwalking flat on the verge of a big game so those were for naught.. Groh and Herm sucked IMO I would say Bowles but its only bout half a Season in and some of his play calling is rookie So this post is meh...depressing??
I voted for Bowles, but I agree with the pro-Mangini sentiment in this thread. I always felt he got a raw deal here. I would have liked to have seen if he could grow as a coach with this franchise. Three years is too short a time to put the axe on a coach - unless his name is Kotite. And then he made the poor decision of going to Cleveland after that. I hope he gets another chance somewhere. I wish him luck in San Fran - although that's not looking too good right now.
If that's the case, then thank God Woody took it personal. Herm was a doofus and I knew the team would never win anything of consequence as long as he was the HC. I saw it by the 2nd or 3rd game of his rookie season coaching the team. Still, I credit him with the big playoff wins, but he had no clue how to fix the things wrong with the team, how to manage the game or the clock. All he knew how to do was spout clichés and maxims. Have another joint. It'll make it all better.
Groh - boring Herm - animated Mangina - boring Rex - animated TB - boring maybe Jim Harbaugh will be wanting to return to the NFL when Woody makes his next move
I voted for Herm Edwards. Inherited talented team but was able to make the playoffs with two different QBs his first two seasons. He finished what Groh and Tuna could not in 2000 and 1999. "Should have" made AFC Championship in 2004. Very consistent overall. Had Pennington stayed healthy I think there would have been even better results. Rex is obviously a close second. But he never regained his footing. Herm was able to guide the Jets back to the playoffs in 2004 after having to coach a 2003 team that lost a great deal of talent (Coles, Glenn, Young). Under similar circumstances, Rex could not get his teams back on track. Incomplete grades for Groh, Mangini and Bowles.
I'll never understand you guys who voted for Rex. Aside from a couple of great game plans and upset victories over NE, what did he do that was right? He couldn't manage the game or the clock. When his game plan didn't work, he couldn't adjust or adapt, he simply had nothing. He talked tough, but when the game was on the line, the team played like pussies more often than not. He either knew nothing about offense or when he tried to meddle (wildcat), he screwed up the offense. He had no eye for talent. He is a buffoon and bloviating blowhard. He's a classless SOB. He helped dismantle the teams from 2009 and 2010 that had such great chemistry and veteran leadership. He made an atrocious hire in Sparano. He inherited a disciplined, tough, veteran team with great leadership that was tired of the anal, harsh discipline of Mangini and enjoyed the bump that players' coaches always get when following a tough disciplinarian, and rode that to the playoffs twice, and even one of those times we didn't earn it, but it was handed to us on a silver platter. Some of you have griped about the team not showing up and/or being flat for halves of games or the whole games under Bowles and for his sticking with "his guys". Rex's teams set the standards for that. The were at their worse, when they should have been at their best following Byes. He kept playing the same ineffective players. They beat themselves with stupid penalties and were sloppy and undisciplined. His press conferences were jokes and an embarrassment to the franchise. He was thoroughly unprofessional. I get that some of you liked his personality (although I don't see how), but really cannot fathom how anyone could think that he was a good HC in any way, shape or form.
Just because you're a "boring" coach doesn't make you a bad coach. C'mon now. Get your head out of your ass. This fan-base has been intolerable the past couple of weeks.
he never said it was good or bad either way. maybe this fanbase is intolerable because you are making ridiculous arguments up in your head?
Being boring should NEVER be a reason to think about hiring another HC. As a fan-base we need to stand behind our newly hired GM and HC. People always want to fire someone as if it will make a difference, little do people know it sets the franchise back 2 or 3 years. Look at this forum the past couple of weeks, it's been awful. There was a thread that was removed that said, oh lets hire Rob Ryan ... Like really? If Mac and Bowles don't progress then we should worry.

I'm going with Groh. Not a popular choice, obviously--but I didn't care for Herm or Mangini, and Bowles' story is very incomplete. Rex I liked pretty well, but being stubborn while the house burns down around you is not endearing in the least. So Groh. Besides, I remember the Monday Night game against Miami, the season opener against the Packers, and the finale lost to the Ravens as some of the fondest Jets memories I have. --I was still at least somewhat young and impressionable-- Besides, look at the coaching staff he put together (inherited? Probably.) Ken Wisenhunt, Todd Haley, Bob Sutton, Todd Bowles, Mike Nolan....not too shabby. Of course they may have covered for Groh being terrible, I don't know, don't really care. I do know that he went 9-7, and other than Parcells, he's the only HC that I've been sad to see go.
I'm on the record being a Bowles fan. Fuck you I was simply pointing out the trend. Get your head out of your SOJF ass.
Gotta admit, losing Herm and getting Leon Washington with the compensation was a pretty good tradeoff.
I loved Rex. lol i knew all of his flaws but i looked passed that bc he was our coach. he was a fun coach to be a fan of. As dumb as he looked screaming all those F bombs after we lossed to them i was just thinking lookin at this guy... same ol rex! haha.. Regardless when it was time it was time.. only thing i hate him for was going to the damn bills.
