exactly - give any coach a great QB and he looks like a genius - give him an average QB and he looks average - give him a poor QB and he gets fired - it is all about the QB and very little to do with coaching - sure there are very rare exceptions to this but they are about as rare as true franchise QBs (and even then you ever notice how often the genius coaches just "happen" to have top tier QBs to rely upon?)

I can't bring myself to such panic half way into their first season. I'd love it if we had won all the games we were supposed to, but you have to expect any rookie HC, GM, QB, water boy ect to have some growing pains. I get it, I'm as frustrated as anyone that the season is tanking, but truth be told they are exceeding my expectations at this point. Hopefully Mac can stock the O with some better talent and get younger over all but I really think we need to have a bit more patients in letting this new team gel and develop... Just my opinion...

Even if this guy messed up clock management and the Jets lost a game, same old Jet fans would be screaming "He's too old, the game has passed him by"

So basically the NFL has nothing to do with team building and everything to do on lucking into an elite QB? What a stupid league. What the fuck is even the point of watching this game when it's all about luck?

Goodell really needs to change the rules to stop benefiting QBs and offense.

and give up all that TV revenue? Cmon Deez, you can't be that naive can ya? Offense is what the rubes want to see. Football purists aren't the ones buying the PSL's or own the Networks that pony up billions to broadcast games. In this day and age, nobody wants to see 14-10 games anymore so to make that happen, they had to strangle defenses. If you have any doubts at all about this, ask yourself why NFL Owners are big players in Draftkings and Fanduel. Nooooo, its not gambling ..

The key to the new NFL is indeed, the franchise QB. More points, better TV ratings, more money. Its that simple. Say hello to the new NFL.

Sorry for late reply to many requests for me to answer some questions re my OP... Been up to my neck at work.

For me with the market we are in , salary cap most new coaches would have had through the years I would have hoped we would have attracted the cream.
To see a coach as good as Fox go elsewhere peeeed me off as I wanted that type of coach . Alternatively this off season I would have gone with Jim Schwartz (ducks for cover but better DC than anyone we have had and did better than Bowles with similar roster strengths ) and deserves a second go. In years gone by if we had given him the reins COwher would have come and that is what Woody should have done . In NYC with a GM type control COwher would have been ideal but we were tied to Tanny far too closely to only cut him adrift two years later .

For all the comments on retreads they are all valid my concern is we aren't rebuilding we are trying to get to play offs with a vet QB and a sizeable FA spend. Our HC philosophy just hasn't been aligned with our draft strategy and FA for 20 years . Obviously a QB makes all the difference but get the philosophy right and we would at least stand s chance

Mike Smith is available. Heard him on Francesa and was impressed. He said his biggest mistake in Atl. was complacency. Felt he didn't do a good job communicating expectations with ownership in the last few years. However, he said he would consider another HC job only if the team had an established QB. Said you can't win consistently in this league without one. Hope Bowles and Maccagnan were listening.

Fitz has established himself in several cities

i think what your saying is Smith wants a Brees or Rivers here

We have a different definition of "established." If Fitz had established himself in any of those cities, he'd still be there. What I interpret what Smith said is that he wouldn't consider coming here because the Jets don't have an established QB. Whether he'd change his mind if the Jets were to go out and get a Brees or a Rivers, I'm not sure. Of course, Smith's success was closely pegged to Matt Ryan's success at QB, who was a rookie when Smith took over, so who knows. If the Jets were to draft a top prospect at QB, maybe he would reconsider it.

Even so, I'm still for giving Bowles a chance, although I'm not very optimistic about the Jets chances for playoff berth this year. At least this season will give Bowles an idea who can play on this team and who can't.
