Tonight the Yanks will be wearing a number '8' patch on their sleeves.

Also, the Empire State Building is lit tonight in blue and white Yankee pinstripes in honor of Berra.

Yanks' '8' on their left sleeve, very low-key, very nice-looking.

Below: yes, the guy right behind Yogi is Seinfeld's Jason Alexander:

When Berra did that commercial for the then fledgling "Miller Lite" brand, instead of a fee, Berra (according to Michael Kay) shrewdly asked for a percentage - and made a killing. Casey Stengal once said of him: "Yogi is the one guy who could fall into a sewer and come up with a gold watch."

Never saw Jason Alexander with a head of his own hair. Only saw him with the toupee Elaine threw out Jerry's window and dropped the blind on his head as he looked out the window for it. The look of triumph on her face as she walks away from poor George was classic.

That's the same thing he did with Yoo-Hoo in the mid- '50s, took a percentage instead of a fee, and it made him a very rich man.

Great commercials Joe, Deacon Jones, Boom Boom Geoffrion, Bobby Hull, Rodney Dangerfield, Ben Davidson, Dick Butkus, Billy Martin...etc... my favorite was Davidson with Rodney Dangerfield bowling, "All we need is one pin Rodney!"

Wanted to keep his bat in the lineup, plus by then they also had Ellie Howard and Johnny Blanchard as well.

Sad pix of Yogi in left (Maz HR in the '60 series):

When Yogi was told that Dublin (in Ireland for the geographically disinclined) had elected a Jewish mayor, Yogi exclaimed:

    "Only in America!"

RIP Yogi, you will be missed....

I don't follow the Yankees much but couldn't they use Yogi now to spell McCann for a few games?

Wow, pulling that shit in a memorial thread JStokes. That's a classless move. Welcome to ignore, now I won't have to defend you any longer.

Dude I was joking. It's all in good fun, thought you were a sport in the Bears thread. You're a damn good poster.

Years ago I worked on the Miller Lite ad campaign.

My job was cameraman/stage director for the test commercials where they would get the athletes together to improv a little and work out ideas for the spots.

I'd be in a small studio all day with some of my childhood heroes...it was generally great.

When Yogi came in it was a highlight.

Mantle...not so much. But that's another story.

    Do tell about these guys!

Was Mantle a douche or drunk?

Yeah, I've heard stories about Mantle.

The first eye opener I had was in Jim Bouton's book Ball Four.

Both. I may have told this here before...

I had spent all morning working with Mantle, Whitey Ford and Billy Martin when they called lunch.

Though I rarely asked anything of the people I worked with, Mickey was my childhood idol...so I ran and got a baseball I had at work.

I meekly walked up to the three of them and told Mickey that he was my idol growing up and it would be an honor if he signed the ball.

He says something about lunchtime and turned to Whitey and said "where we going?" ...leaving me standing there like an asshole.

Anyway, Billy Martin takes the ball out of my hand says he'll sign it. He spins it looking for a spot to sign and sees another autograph and says "I'm not signing this".

The other signature was Reggie Jackson's.

I said "no...it'll be great to have both." He shrugged and signed the ball.

They came back from lunch so drunk that the afternoon session was called off.

    I still have that ball.

I'm guessing if you started with Whitey he would have signed it.

Sad part is, most people today have no idea who some of these old timers are and what they did for the sports they played in. Most of them played for food... and drink.
What would Yogi be worth in today's game?
