This thread will be devoted to the discussion of how the Jets' coaching staff develops young Sam Darnold, or as I like to call him, The Golden Forehead. We are running some weakly bastardized version of the WCO, which I hate. The terminology is so stupidly complicated, and we do not have a competent veteran center who has played in this team's offense for even one snap. The offensive line is mainly backups. The RBs don't know each other. The TEs are also backups. The receivers are the lone bright spot, but that spot is not so bright. How does Sam Darnold succeed with this team?
The RBs are talented (Crowell is young and I liked what I saw from McGuire), Jets are better at WR than people give them credit for (Ardarius and Chad Hansen are young), but I do agree the Oline isn’t nearly good enough. They absolutely need to hit on a lineman or two in this draft. Have faith. Jets still have work to do, but this Pick is a win.
You forgot our HC wants to be a shrimp boat captain. That’s the biggest flaw ATM. We will go 4-12 in 2018 and that shit bowl will be gone and in 2019 we will be fine. Mark it down ....
I've lost the faith, Penny. Too many irons in the fire I guess, but my patience for this team is thin. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to see this kid sling it in a Jets uni, but I'm not fooling myself. No matter what QB we were taking today, we'd still be waiting a while to take some supporting characters this week. You want a silver lining, then I'll give you one. I would have traded every one of those picks if I had known we were getting Darnold, in a heartbeat.
The Jets will be SOJ if they do not use these picks rounds 3-7 to add more pieces to the offense. They HAVE to get better on this side of the ball. It would be ok to ignore the defense for once.
Here's how. In the past, we've all heard these excuses: Why draft a WR or TE when we have no one to throw him the ball? Why draft a speed receiver when our QB doesn't have the arm to get him the ball? Why draft a RB when we need a QB? Why draft OL when there isn't anyone back there worth protecting? Now, assuming Darnold at QB lives up to expectations, we can makes these kinds of acquisitions and they'll have the impact they should have. So that's the key. Darnold is a start, but the Jets FO must continue to acquire talent that compliments his skills.
Macc loves BPA no matter what. I think the real question is where in the FA world we can round out the roster, because I am not going to be shocked if we take a FB and two DBs over the next couple of days. I'm actually looking the Bridgewater signing a lot more than I did when it happened. Crash test dummy of sorts.
I was hoping for the smiley face with heart eyes. Must now work on the funny AND the flattery. This board is becoming too much work.
Last year was a bit of a mess and Morton got fired. Lets see what Bates does. He has a history developing QBs and if Darnold happens to be our starter this year, no doubt he will simplify the offense for him during the growing pains. I have been a vocal critic of how our front office has neglected our offensive line in recent years, but at the skills positions we aren't in bad shape at all. We have plenty of talent at receiver and at runningback we should be good enough.
Shouldn't be too hard to build around this kid when we not only have our 1st round pick come next year's draft but also have the most cap space of any team come next offseason. As a Franchise we're actually in very strong position to strike moving forward with a QB hopeful to BUILD AROUND. I've always been a homer/optimist at heart. Maybe always will be. But even if i tried, it'll be difficult to be negative when thinking about our near future.
Of course you have. But is it really "building around him" when you are either signing cast offs from other teams or vastly overpaying good players that were let go by the teams that drafted them because they would not be worth the price? IMO building is finding young players that can become part of a core.
I've designated the right side of the room for the Kool Aid, please find a comfortable pillow to rest on.
