A late first round would be a reason to trade him , but I wasn't thinking in terms of that since that's simply not going to happen.
I'm no fan of DM but I like him as a 4th, 5th, or even 6th corner (I like Williams more, and maybe have him equal to Walls right now) who may develop while learning from the best. In addition, a trade this year actually becomes a cap hit of an additional 1.6 million. Still, depending on what's available on Day 2 or Day 3, I may move him but would be in no hurry. Would be interested in a decent Tackle or 4th WR from any team interested in him. Too bad there's no info on who these supposed teams are.
I think Dee is a good candidate for switch to free safety. I base that not only his size, speed and ball skills but his sample size, albeit small. His best performance as a pro came in Dec of his rookie year when Rex played more zone coverage. He excelled in the zone coverage and won some award that month. He struggled mightily when asked to play press man on the outside. All 4 of the DBs signed this off-season are press man cover, including Gilchrist who is the popular choice to play FS. I think we will see Dee play FS when he comes back.
The reason now is not the time to trade Milliner is that no other team is likely to offer anything near a second round pick for him. Even a third is highly unlikely.
Teams are trying to buy low on him. Not worth trading him. If he has a monster camp, then maybe he's worth selling high on.
A lot depends on his recovery from the Achilles. He might never fully recover. If it looks like that's the case, we should trade him for whatever we can get. If he's fully recovered, I see no reason why we would consider trading him as he is cheap and has potential. Make the decision when it comes time to talk about a second contract.
I'd send him on his merry way if we could get a 3rd this year. I think a 3rd or higher can be better spent than a 4th CB. With that said, I highly doubt anyone is giving up a 3rd or higher so pretty moot.
I don't even want to give up on Geno Smith yet, let alone Dee Milliner. Both should still be on the roster and trying to improve.
I'm as scared of his glass jaw as anyone, but he was an absolute beast at the end of his rookie season. Cheap depth, and if they traded him I could see a reach for a depth CB around round 4 and I'd rather not waste that pick.
Not going to happen. He was the 9th overall pick that has a chance to get healthy and learn from one of the best to play the position. You don't trade 1st round picks for 6th rounders before there rookie deals are over. Only type of trade that somewhat makes sense is swapping him for Tavon Austin or someone else similar (meaning.. having not met expectations) in that 1st round. Many times teams have done something like that.
Dee Milliner has way too much potential to let go for some low end draft pick. He will be excellent depth for this team and he will have a chance to learn from the beat at the position. It's a win win right now, no reason to ship him out unless an offer you can't refuse emerges.
if someone offers a pick in round 3 or higher i take it and run. otherwise its just selling too low on a guy who might turn out to be a decent 3rd or 4th corner
If I'm a predominantly Cover 2 and/or zone team like the Cowboys, Buccaneers and Steelers, I would fork over a 3rd today for Milliner.
I think if healthy he will end up being a starter. I would not have given Cro the 2o mil guaranteed. It's nice to re-sign him but not for that much,
I wouldn't deal him for essentially nothing (late round pick) either. You can never have enough corners. And he has shown enough flashes where you feel like if he can only recover from his Achilles and stay healthy, the Jets might have a productive player who can play at a reasonably high level for years to come. But the case for dealing him would be this, I guess: 1) He has the 10th highest cap charge on the team ($3.45 M) 2) On top of the 6 (?) surgeries he had prior, a torn Achilles is no joke. For instance, Crabtree hasn't been the same player since tearing his. 3) Chip Kelly. The guy loves injured players and willing to pay a premium for them.
I said this is a previous thread but the only reason they should trade Milliner is if they think he can never overcome his injury issues (big possibility) or if they can get a 1st or 2nd rounder for him (no possibility) or at the very worst a 3rd. If Bowles likes to go with extra guys in his secondary I much rather see guys like Marcus Williams and Antonio Allen get that playing time.
With 2 corners in their 30's this year, Dee is cheap insurance. We just spent a ton of money on our secondary, we don't wanna have a hole there if one guy goes down for a game or two. A play-off chance will likely depend on a single win in the AFC, we need to field the best team every game.
