I definitely believe that they will. Both are more disciplined, more creative, more detail-oriented, better leaders and maybe smarter than Bowles.
Yes we definitely need a starting C, a backup LT, and edge rusher, #2 CB and another TE. In addition, a true #1 WR prospect would be nice and sure help Sam. We can't count on getting all of those in the draft, and we still have cap space, so hopefully Mac is going to make a few more FA signings.
I'm very confident that Williams will have the D playing at a high level. I'm less confident, but still confident that Gase will have the offense and the team overall prepared and ready to play each week, and the offense playing at a pretty high level. Just how high depends largely upon Mac. Will he make the right decisions/picks/moves in the draft and not miss on his mid-round picks? Will he get a quality starting C? Will he find LT and OL depth? Will he add another TE? Will he add a quality #2 CB? There also a couple of other factors: can Osemele stay healthy and can Sam continue to develop and take the next step? I think there's a very good chance that we can be a WC team, and just two months ago, I never dreamed it might be possible.
We are paper tigers right now. Team football, mental sharpness, and attitude, along with the "culture change" should see us improve. Maybe a wild card, but too soon for playoffs...
As others have stated, this team still has too many holes to be a lock for the playoffs. I'd like to see how the rest of FA and the draft play out before predicting what they will do in 2019. Maccagnan needs to nail his mid round picks or the cycle of not having good young talent and depth will continue. Some upgrades might not come until next year(LT, #1WR).
Don't get your hopes up or set to higher target and you won't be fucking suicidal at Christmas and "I'm done with these" by the end of the season. Aim low and be pleasantly surprised for once in your lives
If Darnold morphs into an above average QB, we have a shot. Otherwise no. Signing Bell was nice and all, but see the Giants for how much good an elite RB does when your QB is inadequate. And given Mac's draft record, I don't think our roster will ever be able to carry a below average QB.
Darnold is the key in this. If he takes the next step towards becoming a franchise QB and I think he will then this team will be competitive. Does that mean playoffs I don't know. We still have the draft, every year teams disappoint and other teams surprise. Best case scenario this year I think the Jets compete for a WC. The division still belongs to NE as much as I hate to say that.
I say we need another year to compete so not likely for 2019 but i do expect to win more then 4 games. i think we should win 6-8 but don't see us as a playoff team yet
If the team as constructed today would win 8 games during the 2019 season, that would be an incredible coaching feat. If down the road we can add more parts (OL, #1 WR, CB, pass rush specialist) maybe we can eek out a playoff spot. I'm not holding my breath.
Assuming KC and SD are mortal locks and NE is winning the division, it would take a lot of luck to make the playoffs. Unless you think we can win the division outright the playoffs seems like a huge stretch. I think it takes 11 wins to make the playoffs. 8 to 10 wins would be a very good season.
It all depends on how the new talent settles in and what other new faces we add in th edraft, but turnarounds can happen quickly, especially when the most important piece (QB) is in place. If Sam is good, we should have a chance. If he is REALLY good I would expect us to make the playoffs.
The offense has the potential to be scary good but could be held back by injury and the OL. Lots of questions on the OL. Will Shell return healthy. Will Winters stay healthy. What version of Ose will we get. Will Beachum him have a drop off.who will play center. What about injuries. On defense are secondary looks substantially worse losing no and skrene. But if we get a pass rusher the entire d could greatly improve. We could be anywhere from 6 to 11 wins. Still a lot of work to do.
IMO we are currently a 7 win team. There is a very fine line between a 7 win team and 10 win team. Some is the QB play, some is team discipline, coaching decisions, injuries, and respective Off/Def units and their ability to be effective in certain game situations. Regardless of how the draft shakes out, we may start out weak next season (1-4/2-5) until the QB really starts to figure it out and the new players start to gel.
Let's pump the breaks on playoff talk and lets wait to see if we first hit a home run out of the park come the draft and see what happens heading into the regular season (escaping preseason). Even a homer at heart such as myself can't predict the season without the... ROSTER!!!
Look when you support Man City from around 1977 onwards and don't see them win anything until 2011 and then in around 1983 you pick the Jets to follow and don't see them win anything and still waiting in 2019, you tend to view the following season with a zen-like calm.
6-8 wins = cleaning house. This team cannot win 6 to 8 games again, it needs to be competing for a wildcard spot up until week 16 or 17.
