I never tip the attendant. The only time I could see tipping is if they clean your windows for you or something like that. Honestly, I'd rather pump my own gas like 99% of the time. The only time I like having someone else do it is when it's pouring rain or snow.
I fill my car up before this kind of weather so I don't have to worry about not having gas and forcing them to be outside.
same here but my offer to clean windshields and check the oil was clearly driver dependent. the hotter the babe, every fluid was in play.
That is their job. If they don't go above and beyond they aren't getting a tip. Americans are too soft when it comes to tipping. They think everybody should be tipped any time they do any service. That's absurd to me. I'm not tipping an attendant for doing what they already get paid to do, something I can easily do myself but am not allowed to.
Waiters are intentionally paid less so they depend on people's tips. That's night and day there. I always tip people generously if their job depends on it, unless they are rude or jerks, but that's rare.
What if people can't always afford to tip every single person that ever does anything for them? Tipping has turned into a scam here.
I agree. Tipping has turned into a scam at certain things but NJ gas station attendants aren't paid decent enough. The tip makes majority of their income. And in this weather I believe they fully deserve the tip.
There's a station by me that has a guy pumping the gas for the same price as the other stations at the lowest price around. I go there often and he gets at least $1. every time. Being gracious and respectful to people that have jobs like that is a good thing.
I've noticed that most of the stations in my neighborhood (on Long Island) seem to have gone over to full serve in the past year or two; no idea why.
One thing I noticed 30+ years back when I was pumping gas. The Hispanic guys that were heading off to construction jobs or landscaping jobs almost always tipped, even if there were a few times they didn't, I checked the oil and windshield and windows cleaned because I knew they tipped when they could. The uppity fuckwads from the rich areas of Pelham Manor and New Rochelle, station was right on the border, they always made sure to ask you to check the oil, clean the windshield, mirrors, etc., and you were lucky to get a quarter out of them but usually not even that. Except one guy, always gave a $5 tip, which back in 1979-1980 or so, was nice.
^ My experience was pretty similar. I remember some Puerto Rican guys who'd give you a bit of weed or a beer if they had nothing else. Nothing worse than some yuppie asshole in a BMW.
Now you made me feel terrible. I tip $1 or $2 every time and I don't get any window cleaning service etc. Is this too low in your opinion?
