Lets assume good service and a good, timely, enjoyable meal. Tipping isn't a tax so if you don't think a server deserves one, don't give one. However, for the most part servers make a large part of their cash via tip even if they have to kick some back to the house..

I usually tip 20% max. Goes down from there depending on how fast the food comes, how often the server checks my table.

I usually tip male waiters more than females, just to reflect what goes on in business world.

Same service, 20% for men, 15% women.

20%, unless she flirts with me and my wife isn't there, then a little extra.

I was taught that 16.67% is the right amount. In NY that's double the tax plus a bit. If I'm paying with debit/credit I will round up to an even amount and pay that. If I'm tipping cash I tend to leave somewhere between that amount and 20%, again rounding so that a $5, $10 or $20 is what winds up on the table.

20% rounded up to next multiple of ten, unless there is automatic service charge (much more common here in Philippines), then i might cheap down to 10%. but the way us Filipinos compete to cover the bill, the tip is usually well over 20%

Now everybody go back and tell us if the percentages you've given are base on the pretax or post tax total.

Automatic 20%, can only go up. My gf works as a waitress so I know the struggles of waiters/waitresses working 5 hours for a whopping 30-40 bucks. A lot of the time it isn't their fault if something is wrong or the kitchen is backed up.

I'll tip 20% most of the time. If the service is bad I'll tip 10% or less, but it has to be really bad. The purpose of tips is to ensure good service. If you get bad service you should tip accordingly.

    Wow

Doesn't it also depend a little on where you dine as well ..

I live out of NJ where I raised my kids ..So when I am in town I treat at a high end place

With drinks could be bout $200 ...15% is good tip 20 % great

Thats why servers seek out the 4 and 5 star places

    imho
