The 1st offensive play of the season was a bad sign. That was just an absurdly bad call. It was Darnold's 1st play in the NFL an you would expect his 1st pass to be something simple to build his confidence. Instead, they called this very risky roll-out then throw it back across the field play. We all know the result.

Whatever it was, there was an obvious disconnect that seems to have disappeared by week 13.

Speaking of that first game, he then went on to drop damned near 50 points. I’d say the game already slowed down for him. Then “something” happened where he started looking like a potential scrub.

We may never know what the something was, but some friction between Darnold and Bates explains a lot.

  3. Just because he fit the WCO doesnt mean it was the best fit for Darnold. He seemed to be more focused on executing the short/intermediate game than so playing to his strengths.

Then youve got the HC saying not turning the ball over is the most important thing after going 2 games w.o a TD,the spencer long debacle, etc

Ill give Bates credit.Whatever buttons hes pushed whether directly or via delegation since Darnold came back from injury has been just what the DR ordered.Hes been more confident, decisive & a big play threat

I haven't seen this reported anywhere at all. It seems to be just one person perpetuating this rumor and it doesn't seem like the media is taking it seriously because a story like this would be major news in all the NY sports media.

I still haven't seen anyone else talking about it. Not even Manish! Is this Josina Anderson person on ESPN not respectable or credible? I don't know much about her. I don't watch ESPN much anymore.

That is the only Jets related Tweet she posted after the show yesterday. I guess some "Source" in house said all of that. No one seems to care what she said though.

  7. I think Harbaugh willl at least listen. As much as he loves Michigan his heart is clearly in the pro game which was reported about a month ago anyway.

Wouldnt be surprised if he stayed at michigan but i dont think he plans to be Bo schembechler either. He will listen if the Jets come calling.Timing just has to be right

The end is near? Oh, shit, figures Armageddon would arrive just when the Jets finally got their QB of a life-time.

    Here's a link from jetswire:

    https://jetswire.usatoday.com/2018/...internal-debate-on-how-to-handle-sam-darnold/

Bates needs to get kicked in his ass. I don't want to see him again. He was kind of blaming Sam that he wasn't getting through to him, as if Sam is a lunkhead. Maybe your coaching just sucks.

Interesting article. That is from September, but still reported by Josina Anderson, who clearly has someone in with the Jets who is anti-Bates. Either Bowles or someone close to him. The source isn't wrong though. It is clear Bates has been terrible and handled Sam (and the entire offense) poorly.

I couldn't find anything recent but it's kind of telling that the same song is being sung to the same tune. Darnold going into game 16 is way ahead of Mark Chimpchez in the brains department, for i.e., let's start there. <== It's evident; but if Bates is trying to shift blame onto Darnold (again) because he's handcuffing him and his play-calling is this side of Shitsville this far into the season, bye, don't let the door at Florham Park hit you in the ass. Our STs (LOLOLOL, I know!) has risen above expectations, but I know some of the plays by Sam were of his own last second design. His decision making has improved with or without Jeremy Bates. It's probably even somewhat independent.

Yeah, agreed 100%. Hopefully the Jets hire someone who can help Sam get to the next level. Looks like he has been doing most of this on his own this season. Which is actually remarkable. He is a 21 year old rookie on a team with a bad roster and bad coaches, yet seems to have survived and began to figure things out on his own. The sky is the limit for him.

I've always believed it was one of the worst hings to happen to football when they transitioned to having the plays called from the sidelines. It transformed it from a player's game to a coach's game. Read the article posted by Sec314 in his thread Athletic Article to get a glimpse at how it used to be when QBs called their own plays. Now, if the QB's radio headset stops working they have to stop the game because obviously he's too dumb to call his own plays. Except...when you see QBs who have proven how good they are are given free reign to call plays - Brady, Rodgers, and a few others, and how often they win when they go "off script". I believe Sam did this a few times since he returned and had a positive results, which isn't surprising since a moron could come up with better plays than Bates and Bowles.

It's not going to happen because the coaches will never go back to having less control, but they should get rid of the radio helmets and limit the number of substitutions allowed per quarter/game,and penalize any attempt by anyone on the sidelines from sending in plays. Let the players play! Stop the inexorable march towards the game becoming a video game played with humans by coaches having control over everything on the field. The game wold be much more exciting and enjoyable IMO.

I'd venture to say that Sam's recent improvement is 60% himself/40% McCown and Bates with a resounding 0%, especially since the only tidbit from the recent NFL Live interview that I could find (second hand) was more of the same as the other article; BUT Bates also said that he's had trouble "connecting" with Darnold all season, that "he doesn't write things down", and has had to "rely on McCown". WTF. I think Bates just talked himself out of a job and probably out of another hire elsewhere. Submarining your own QB over your own shortcomings as a Coach, what a vote of confidence.

That USC fiend, TrojanPride, who unfortunately hasn't stuck around for much of the season, hated Bates when he was there. I liked her input and was wondering about what her opinion would be of Sam as it now stands, and more importantly, what she thinks of Leonard Williams looking fat. If I find a concrete link later of dopey Bates running his mouth, I'l post it.

What do you guys understand this to mean: "they don’t feel Michigan should be pressed to keep him"?

The Jets feel as though if they make a good offer to Harbaugh, Michigan probably won't strongly counter?

I don't think McCown is ready to hang up his cleats yet, and become a coach. I think he feels he still has some football left in him, as do most professional athletes.

I wouldn't have a problem making him one of the highest paid backups next year again, as it will certainly help Sam's development. That's priority one. We have the cap space.

I don't wish bad on any mans employment status, but I think Bowles needs to go back to Arizona as their HC or DC.

Yeah, that is how I took it. Maybe he isn't as good or important to Michigan as some say and they will be fine moving on without him. I think going (0-4) against Ohio State has hurt his reputation there.

As Jets as that was, the best part was Sam's reaction to it. He shrugged it off and got over it. Fast. No moping. But yeah, way to go Bates. I hope they show that play when the Jets win home field advantage next year, partly because it's hilariously Jets. I literally went, "I . . . ooooooooo."

I thought Bates was in the mountains for years learning esoteric based NFL in preparation for this job.
    All that elite training...didn’t...stick?
