Yeah DLo had some HUGE plays for us in 2010 season and in the playoffs. Please sign Lowery first and then we can go after Landry if need be
I know the 40 is not game speed, but when the hell did a guy 4.35 become slow? Landry has great physical tools, when healthy, its the part above his shoulders that people take issue with at times. If he was healthy cosistantly he would be making a great deal of money in FA, if he hit it. Its more likely he would have been tagged.
I think we should keep Smith. His strength is obviously not coverage, but he does everything else well and hits hard. I don't really like Landry, unless we cut Smith but getting a safety that can cover should be one of the priorities on D this year and Landry is not that guy.
Eric Smith is a nice role player and special teams guy that can start in case of emergency, for that reason he'd be great to keep around. He shouldn't be our starting safety though.
Landry can't stay healthy and he appears to be a juicer. That may be an unfair characterization but I think you need to beware of a guy like that.
I think Smith should be kept but in a lesser role. They need to add someone to the Safety mix.... Leonhard is smart and savvy but just isn't big or fast enough to deal with Gronk et al.
I'd be fine with keeping Smith, but he can't be a starter. Opponents just target him all day long, and kills our defense. That's the same reason that I'm not enthused with Landry -- he's complete shit in coverage. I'd like him if we somehow find a real centerfielder to play FS (because he could be a force playing in the box and blitzing in Ryan's defense,) but since that seems unlikely I think we should be focusing on someone who can help handle Gronk, Hernandez, et al.
Jets would be very lucky to get Landry to play safety. For one, the injury concerns need to kind of be removed from the equation assuming his past injuries have no permanencies. Safety is naturally a position where you see alot of injuries. That's why it's important to have quality depth at that spot. Remeber, the same thing was said about being injury prone when the Jets signed Brodney Poole. Poole has had very little injury issues since becoming a Jet. Landry's strength is in the box, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have good coverage range..because he does. He would be an upgrade in all facets at safety.
now i'm not all too sure what this means but.. doctors have told landry that he needs to have surgery on his achilles tendon. he's refused and is instead going through plasma and stem cell treatment. i have no idea if that is a legit alternative but it's kind of worrisome that he's been told he needs surgery and the guy said no.
Any injury any human gets will no matter what; effects them in the future. Your body is never the same thru a injury physically and mentally
Here's the opposing QB rating and completion percentage when throwing against Landry the past 3 years: Landry 2011: 109.0, 71.4% 2010: 106.1, 62.8% 2009: 139.8, 68.4% And here's Eric Smith: 2011: 97.2, 66.7% 2010: 105.1, 63.6% 2009: 48.4, 50.0%
It's no secret Eric Smith has been this fan base's whipping boy for a while now. Having a top 5 pass D each of the past three seasons with him receiving major reps is proof that he does do his job most of the time. He gets burned occasionally and gets crucified for it, kind of like Cromartie. Having Revis really makes it hard for any DB on this team to look good..... Smith needs a lesser role but should be on this team.
Eric Smith isn't good in coverage and when he does get beat, which is often, he's too slow to catch up to anyone who has a step on him. Only 1 safety in the league gave up more yards when targeted this year than Smith and he was in for about 150 more snaps. I suspect that Landry would have given him a run for his money though if he managed to stay healthy enough to amass a similar number of snaps. I like Smith as a situational 46 guy, special teams player and depth guy, but he can't keep up with todays passing game without a tremendous pass rush.
Interesting perspective but I'm not sure how much of an indicator that is. There are 10 other players that formulate those stats as does competition & defensive scheme. Additionally, for much of the past 3 years Smith has been a part time player. Injuries aside Landry never really leaves the field on defense. In terms of pure physical ability and film, Landry is a far superior coverage safety than is Smith. Is he the center fielder many on here covet? No he's not. Rex doesn't like that type of safety anyway(See the trading of Kerry Rhodes after 09). Rex likes smart, tough physical safeties who don't shy away from zero coverage and open field tackles. As long as they are not a liability on the back end( like Smith often is) than he lives with good not great recovery speed. Landry fits the bill of a Rex Ryan safety.
I'm not sure how you can evaluate Landry and qualify it with "injuries aside". He hasn't played a full season since '08. The two have taken a similar number of snaps over the last 3 years. Landry is much faster than Smith, I don't know how much better he is in coverage though. If Rex wants to build his defense from the outside in I think he needs to reevaluate the skill set he wants in his safeties.
