If Mac is still our GM I think Allen will be the guy. This is strictly based on Mac's history so far on drafting QBs. Mac seems to have a type; prototypical size, big arm and accuracy/mechanics be damned. Our projected draft position and the rumors of the Jets being in love with Allen only reaffirms this. It was rumored the Jets were enamored with Hack and that turned out to be true.

ick, just had a flashback of watching the draft with my brother hoping SOMEBODY in front of the Jets would draft Hack.....and like the inevitability of life, death and taxes, the Jets drafted Hack

we laughed because if we didn't we would cry

I like what I see from Allen also, and you're right about him needing some good players surrounding him and opposition to see what he can do.

Absolutely not, despite fitting the prototype Mac has.

Allen has done nothing during the regular season to warrant a first round pick. After the first 3 weeks of the collegiate season, he basically destroyed his draft stock. The guy couldn't elevate his team past their talent deficiencies on the collegiate level. How do you expect him to elevate the Jets past their deficiencies on the professional level?

If I'm Maccagnan, teetering on the the unemployment line, I would not bet my career on Allen.

Now, if the Jets can get him after round 2, that would be a completely different story.

This is my QB profile, if I'm GM:

    Tangibles:
    6'2" or taller.
Strong arm - no throw on field is a limitation.
    Above average hands (shitty weather).
    +63% completion rate in college.
Perform successfully in pressure situations (win or loss).
Demonstrated strong command of team and gained respect in locker room.

    Intangibles:
Demonstrated ability to learn on the fly.
    Can think on their feet.
    Comes from a good family.
    Intelligent.
    Empathetic.
Demonstrates strong leadership (on and off the field).

If you look at McCown, Hack, Petty.......you are right Mac does like big guys with thick builds and strong arms.
Even in his Houston days there was similar pattern.

I tend to prefer that in a QB as well, but you can't ignore accuracy.
Generally players don't get more accurate in the pros.

Are you shying away from Allen based on this season's completion percentage?
Senior Bowl could go a long way proving one way or the other whether he's worth a first round investment.

I'm wary of Allen because of his inability to consistently and/or accurately complete what would ordinarily be considered simple passes. It's a trait that Hackenberg and Petty also share. Allen definitely has wow throws on tape but too many poor passes on what should be easy throws for a kid of his talent level. In the NFL you can't win on hero ball alone. Those passes to the flat, shallow crosses, 5 yards come backs...etc. are what keeps the chains moving and you defense off the field.

What made Wentz and Mahomes special as prospects was that they completed the simple passes at pretty much the same consistency as the "holy sh*t" type ones. Allen is on par with Wentz in terms of physical gifts and more physically gifted than Mahomes. If he can clean that part of his game he can be something special.

TGG if 4 years from now Allen is Blake Bortles would you sign up?

Your post perpetuates my point that it’s not that simple.

All four years, the good and the bad as I feel the inconsistency in Allen's game will follow him to the pros like it did Bortles.

forget it guys - the last few qb's taken by this club......sanchez, smith, petty, hackenberg.

    brutal, just brutal.

the only way we will ever get an effective deep playoff QB is by signing someone elses draft pick 4 years later.

With rosen, darnold likely off the board... I like Allen/Mayfield. Any of these 4 could end up becoming the best. So just rank them and take whomever is left on your board. I think it ends up being Mayfield.

Would that be because we look for QB's that suck and then draft them? Perhaps they don't suck until the Jets get them inside Florham Pk. where magically, they deteriorate into awful Qb's. Either way, the result is always the same..

Your forgetting the Bills. They are likely to trade up ahead of us and have the capital to do so very easily.

I think I'd take the Blake Bortles of this season, but definitely not the Bortles of the previous 3.

More importantly than who we take as QB - assuming we actually DO take a QB - is who is going to develop him and the system he'll pay in? If it's Bowles we're still fucked.
