The Broncos are not going to pay Flacco $18M to sit on the bench. They will likely release Keenum, unless someone is stupid enough to fork over a draft pick. If Keenum is released, might be a good idea for the jets to consider him as a backup to Darnold, if they can get him on the cheap. The Broncs will still owe Keenum $7M next year even if he is released, and I like him as a backup much better than McCown. I thought McCown sucked last year in the few games he started. Of course Keenum might look for a better opportunity where he is given a chance to start, but if your old team (Broncos) prefers a guy like Flacco (benched at times last year) over you as the starter, you are not exactly negotiating from strength. IF the jets can get him on the cheap, I think Keenum is a better backup plan than McCown (and IMO Webb is not ready to be the backup yet). Thoughts?
Great topic @tomdeb I think Keenum would be an ideal backup but for Tannehill becomming available. Hes the better QB & his working knowledge of Gase & his system would be useful. Id like to see Davis Webb stick around as a 3rd string Developmental type.Perhaps in a year or 2 he becomes the long term backup or trade bait if things go really well.
I would rather spend as little money as possible on a backup QB. I understand the importance, but other than S, QB is the one position we need to spend close to nothing on THIS season. To me, McCown was worth the $10 mil because from the getgo you knew he was going to be a positive influence on whichever rookie we drafted, and by all accounts he was. Will Tannehill or Keenum come for less? Because they don't have much value besides what they do on the field. Maybe they do, I don't know, but I would much rather have McCown around for at least another year as Sam hits year 2 of development.
Keenum and Tannehill are great options, but think about the teams that still need starters. Dolphins, Redskins, Jaguars, Bengals, and Buccaneers I would say off the top of my head. Nick Foles gets traded to one, but the others will still sign or trade for Keenum and Tannehill. I could see the Jets bringing in a QB like Brock Osweiler, David Fales, Tom Savage, or someone in that mold to be the #2 this year.
Agreed. Upgrade every other possible position. We're not winning anything with a backup QB it's Sam or bust if he gets hurt. If he's out a week or 2 we can get by with a stopgap but if he's out for a while I'm not interested in going 7-9 with Case Keenum.
Case Keenum will likely start somewhere, he would not be worth the money as a backup, IMO. The Jets should sign a cheap veteran backup with experience.
Tannehill would be a great BU. I was wondering, where is McCown going to end up? Could they move him to a coaching role or so long my friend?
If he's not the backup then he needs to be brought on as staff in some capacity. His relationship with Sam seemed very strong and that's not something I'd rip away from a 21-year-old kid still trying to find his footing... especially with a head coach like Gase and a clueless OC like Loggains.
Just to weed out certain parts of the fanbase, I’d love this. Kidding, the media circus would be a massive headache and the total opposite of what we need but I would get enjoyment out of people crying and stomping their feet and never coming back for as long as he’s here.
I think Keenum and Tannehill would be good back-ups but expensive, but Kap is intriguing. Because if you do the deal early enough then the media storm would settle well before the season. He obviously will not be starting so the media will have no pieces to write about him potentially starting. Reid at the panthers had virtually no media impact and he has now signed a multi-year deal and is their starting safety. Sign on a 1 year deal for cheap and have him just incase?? Can't see an issue. Has experience and hopefully will not be required throughout the season, but if so would be intriguing as can scramble and has ok arm strength. His last few games for 49ers were not bad. If looks good in pre-season and everyone suddenly wants him do we have another Bridgewater and could get another draft pick??? Now i will go in a social media bunker and log out of my account for a few weeks. You could at least invite him to a work-out. Will be intriguing to see who, if any, go for it.
Why sign Keenum when we could just bring McCown back, likely at a 20% increase from last year, $12 million or so? /s
Personally dont care for the man (as Ive previously posted) as well as his on the job antics..his multimillion settlement.. and buzz he created for NIke sales.. Now, did not our Owner CJ say he doesnt care if players "stay in locker room for Nat Anthem?" ...this is a perfect fit IF Kap still wants to play football for a sympathetic billionaire Of course, the fanbase will be polarized but New York is the home of Avante Garde causes The New Locker Room:Sam D FQB, A Bell, Possibly OBj Possibly Antonio Brown, and Kap as your back up!!???!! Wow can Googly Eyes make this a Winner ??
McCown should come cheaper this year, and I would definitely re-sign him to keep that continuity. If anything, pickup another young QB to compete with Webb to be the future backup.
