I got the switch when I was really acting a fool. I'll never forget, when I was like 5, I was jumping all over my mom's flowers in the backyard. Ruined them completely. Man, my parents whooped my ass.

Looking back, I deserved that shit

Last time, when I asked around, my mom (and other relatives close to her age) and most of my similar-age friends/cousins were like "yeah, and?" We all remember acting a fool and getting our behinds whooped as kids, with a belt or a switch depending on the era. Now though? Well, you saw the controversy that erupted last time.

I wonder what the cutoff age for this is. This era is so decidedly anti-spanking that it's probably best not to, or at the very least, don't speak up about it. Not sure WTF he was thinking, admitting it to a reporter.

According to Master Tesfatsion, Peterson “generally avoids” using switches these days, and he quoted the 33-year-old back as saying that he eschews such punishment “nine times out of 10.”

So if he's using the switch once every 10 times he beats his kid--how fucking often is he beating his kid?

Got news for you AP, whatever you're doing, IT'S NOT WORKING.

    Best wooden spoon story....

We were little, and my younger brother (prob only 4 at the time) knew he was gonna get it for some reason....ran down to the basement where I was playing.
Well.... here comes mom "You're gonna get it". Grabs him over her knee.. light smack. My brother smiles..... then a harder smack. "HEE HEE".... Then in frustration "WHACK"..... her grandmother's wooden spoon snaps at the handle and my brother laughs. She then looks in his pants and pulls out one of those small childrens "Golden" Books and extra underwear. HAHA.... I could see she was trying hard not to laugh, and pretty sure from that point on, she knew these boys would be a handful.

In retrospect, We probably got the wooden spoon because mom always hurt her hand spanking us

You can spank a kid without going that far. That was child abuse. And Peterson is a dumbass for admitting he still hits his kid.

I believe that means a consistent approach to discipline not necessarily hitting a child all the time.

My father made sure we had a warning before any belt action took place, so we had a chance to avoid the belt.

He never hit us like AP did with his kid, but he spanked us or used the belt after we made a habit of bad behavior.

There were 2 kinds of offenses growing up. The kind that got a warning or a non physical punishment the first time (misdemeanors so to speak) and the kind that got you hurt immediately (felonys)
All and all it was fairly dished out and most of the time deserving of not too lenient.

This isn’t about the past incident which I agree was much too far. The belt that he speaks of now I don’t have a problem with. The key is to not be angry when you administer the punishment.

shit your bro deserved the switch though. Smiling at momma, while getting hit with a wooden spoon. He wouldn't be smiling with a switch. He'll be crying in his room until dinner is ready.

Shit, when I got the switch, my ass ain't go downstairs for dinner, I told my mom I was going to starve, then she came upstairs with the switch again. Best believe I ate that broccoli that night.

Was the belt really fine for us? Personally I think that's part of why the world is so messed up today. Abusing kids is a big part of why those kids later on abuse their children. It's a vicious cycle that teaches kids to be afraid, which IMO is a terrible mentality in today's world to base most decisions on fear. To say it's okay because it was done to us is fallacious.

There’s a line between abuse and punishment. IMO the world is messed up today in part because we have a generation now that never learned consequences for their bad behavior. Horrible manners, no respect for anyone else and think they can do whatever they want with no repercussions.

I can't believe Adrian Peterson didn't get jail time. It was reduced to misdemeanor aggravated assault or something like that. Peterson originally said that his 4 year old son didn't flinch or cry or move a muscle while he was getting whipped so what's the problem here. He then drove his kid to a hospital for treatment, but the hospital thing is unclear. When did you notice that what you did was uncool? Then I think the bio-mom reported him to the police and as well as to hospital staff. I can't remember what comes first the chicken or the egg, but fck this guy. I quasi-understand why the cycle continues but some people shouldn't procreate.

I'm with ya, but that doesn't mean that it should equate to serious physical abuse. That was serious physical abuse. He even switched his son's scrotum, his back, his buttocks, c'mon now. If the police are alerted, it really is that bad, and half the time, no-one gives two shits because the system is so overloaded.

My Mom was a hair puller. As in practically a scalper. I wasn't a brat, just a tempest in a tea pot born inquisitive and moody. It's just how I'm hard-wired. My Daddy always knew if I sassed my Mom because one pony-tail was ten stories higher than the other. "Don't get smart." "Why not?" Yank. Well, to my credit, it was a serious question. I have a ton of short stories/vignettes of my childhood that are hilarious. Sorry, Mom. Not really.

No one is saying differently about what he did. That was excessive and abuse. I didn’t take that as the topic oft discussion. We, I thought ,were discussing his use of the belt now.

This is literally what every generation has said about their successors going back to ancient history. I see no reason why it's more accurate now than it wasn't then.
