10p, Dotel hasn't been the Dotel you want to think about for many years now. By all means, I'm curious to see what he does, but look at these: Code: Year Team G GS W L SV CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA 2001 HOU 61 4 7 5 2 0 0 105.0 79 35 31 5 47 145 2.66 1.20 .205 2002 HOU 83 0 6 4 6 0 0 97.1 58 21 20 7 27 118 1.85 0.87 .173 2003 HOU 76 0 6 4 4 0 0 87.0 53 25 24 9 31 97 2.48 0.97 .172 2004 HOU 32 0 0 4 14 0 0 34.2 27 15 12 4 15 50 3.12 1.21 .213 2004 OAK 45 0 6 2 22 0 0 50.2 41 23 23 9 18 72 4.09 1.16 .220 2005 OAK 15 0 1 2 7 0 0 15.1 10 6 6 2 11 16 3.52 1.37 .185 I mean, good wouldn't be what I would describe as his worst case scenerio. I'm excited about the possibilities, and it's certainly worth the risk, but his days as being a premier set up man could be a stretch, I think.
He won't be asked to close here, like he was in Oakland. As a set-up man, or even middle reliever, he has been dominant.
Proctor is making me believe everytime he pitches, he ahs been outstanding. Frnsworht has been good, not great, and if Dotel can contribute this year we'll have good epth plus a couple of decent matchup relievers.
I just don't like how Farnsworth relies way too much on his fastball when he's behind in the count. Yes it hits 97-98, but his slider is nasty...He gets behind and goes to his fastball which can be hit, his control gets wild at times...I'm just not confident in him as I was Gordon...We'll see.
can he be worse than Gordon was in a big spot? Gordon was lights out against teams like the Royals but in big reg season games and in the postseason he was a joke. We might miss him during the dog days oft he reg season but for sure we will not miss him come October.
No but what are we really losing? Gordon was a joke in postseason so we are absically int he same spot. Now if proctor is for real and Dotel can give us something we'll have a heck of a pen and not need to rely so much on Kyle.
He was very good for the Braves and Tigers last year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/farnsky01.shtml
Here is a different one. Neither of them have blown saves though but it seems that last year was his best year of his career. From what I have gathered from junc is only the bad postseason performance count. Pedro shutting out the Cards, doesn't matter because he got left out to dry by Grady Little the year before. Arod's good postseason performances are meaningless based on his series last year.
The one thing you can say about last year's performance is that the HR he gave up would have been a flyball well in front of the warning track in basically any other ballpark, but since it was in the bandbox at Houston, it just made it out. He hasn't been great in the postseason, but he's not as bad as Gordon.
Ugh I'm jealous that Dotel returned to New York with the Yanks... but as you say he's been battling serious injuries so you're either getting a huge bust or a shut-down setup man.
Do we get players to eprform in May or to perform in October? It shouldn't be the "junc litmus tests" it should be the everyone's litmus test. What's the point of getting to postseason if you don't have players who can handle pressure and you have no shot to win?
No it's not a big deal w/a 2-0 series lead he shut down a dead Cardinal team. Losing game 3 in '03 then trying to bean a guy in the head b/c you are getting shelled then losing a 3 run lead in the 8th IS a big deal. ARod has done nothing for us other than have a good postseason series against an overmatched Twins team. He did nothing in meaningful moments against Bos in '04 and he cost us the '05 ALDS and he continues time after time to fail in big reg season moments. I can live w/ the reg seaon failures if he came through in october but he doesn't come through in either.
