Jets | Team interested in Shaffer Thu, 2 Mar 2006 05:56:22 -0800 Mark Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports a source said the New York Jets are interested in Atlanta Falcons OT Kevin Shaffer, when he becomes and unrestricted free agent. "That strongly leads me to believe that the Jets are going to go after a quarterback with their first-round draft pick," the source said. "If they want (Shaffer) that badly, then why would they draft (Virginia) OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who's the best tackle in the draft?" I hear we're bringing Pennington back. If we sign Shaffer...why cant we still draft D'brick? Shaffer is a zone blocking tackle and D'brick is projected to be one of those too. Why don't we just rebuild the entire line now? We're gonna have to, why don't we just get guys that will fit in nicely together?
He a left tackle but in a zone blocking system both tackles can be undersized. He's 6'5 290 and has some good quickness. I wouldn't be upset if we picked him up to play right tackle and left Jones at LT but as long as we don't reach for cutler at 4, i'm not sold on this guy in the least bit.
Jones tried to play RT last year in a zone blocking system and had a lot of problems. DBrick would probably have similar issues since both are much better suited to the left side.
I believe it was here that i heard that Jones will come to camp next year at 310 lbs. His major problem last year was anchoring against the bull rush which occurs more on the right side, so if he was able to come in next year at a heavy weight he may be able to hold up aginst the strenght of LDE and also beat the LDE out of his stance. It may work!
I've heard he's a pretty good LT, but I didn't think we were going to run a zone blocking system here, and that is what he is good at playing.
I'd still be worried. I'm much rather see them try him at center if he could master it then go back to RT though I personally think that Jones can be good at LT and we could fill a bigger need with our draft then going for DBrick though I won't be calling for the FO's heads if they do take DBrick.
The zone blocking experiment was from dinger, he tried to make what worked in TN work in NY. It just did not happen. Who knows what the blocking scheme will be like this year - I guess we will see.
I don't feel that it was the system that failed, I think it was more the players who failed. When you have Scott Gregg starting at RT, a guard playing out of position at center, a back up starting on the quater backs blind side and a guy who has alot of potential but wasn't ready to start starting. I think that's why zone blocking failed.
It nice to see a thread dealing with the OL issue. If we can beef up the line many of our offensive problems will be resolved. We need big athletic people up front. I'm not opposed to have Jones, DBrick and Shaffer in the fold. I also would like to see us address the center position. Nick Mangold from Ohio St, Ryan Cook New from Mexico or Marvin Philip from California anyone of these centers could help! Next year with the line solidified we could pick a QB in the draft. Looks like Quinn from ND might be a perfect fit for the JETS
i would really like if we switched. the only team i know of that is currently using zone blcokin is denver and theyve had a 1,000 yd usher every year since Terrell Davis was a rookie, not to mention theyve gotten rid of their leading rusher for the past 3 years in a row! that line is amazing, andy they are faster than they are strong
We used the zone blocking scheme last year. Denver is the only team that has had incredible success with it. Many teams use it and have success with it in the regular season, but they get blown apart by top pass-rushes in the playoffs.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we use a zone-blocking system this past season?? It was a complete mess....
Correct. I think his point is that this is the second zone-blocking O-lineman we've been reported to have targeted. So it appears that we might be keeping the scheme, for better or worse, and the release of Mawae would further corroborate that theory.
