Between Rex and Bowles, Jet fans have seen a contrast of defensive philosophies: Rex Ryan tends to prefer a style that minimizes big plays and YPG, but often does little in the way of generating turnovers. So far, Bowles seems to prefer the exact opposite and doesn't mind giving up yardage, assuming that the defense compensates with turnovers and impact plays at opportune times. From what you've seen so far, which style do you feel is a better fit for this defense?
Being as we're 2-0 and just dominated one of the best QB's in the league while Rex and his fat mouth just got schooled by the Patriots it's easy for me to say I much prefer this defense. But that doesn't take into account that we likely won't generate five turnovers every game and batter the QB. I'll have to reserve my full opinion until after game 10 and see where we're at. I will say Rex is very predictable with his blitzing schemes, Bellicheck made him pay for it. And if your defense can't generate turnovers it's very tough to win games and control the tempo. Overall I thought Rex's defense was over-rated during his tenure with the Jets, the lack of the big play and crucial stop seemed to haunt us.
I want both. I would love to see us have the #1 defence. An Elite unit like the old Tampa Defence, or Ravens D.
Maybe we can have it all....? Yards Per Game Total Points Points per Game Interceptions Fumble Recoveries
YPG is meaningless. Give me PPG any time. Jets D is #1 in that category, by the way. [8.5/game] Other than 3rd down conversion, nearly all of the defensive stats are in top 10, but the PPG is #1 by a long shot. I like that.
I love Bowles system, but in all fairness to Rex you have to acknowledge that Rex never had a secondary that was this good and his Dline was never as good as what the jets now have (and will have when Richardson returns). He may have had Revis & Cromartie, but he never had safeties that were as good as Pryor and Gilchrist have been so far this season. I suspect if Rex had the defensive personnel the Jets have he could do something similar, although the jets would probably still have a bunch of stupid penalties.
