Can I get someone to clear this up, please? And seriously, leave this discussion to solely about Sanchez's contract status. We have enough threads about whether you want to decapitate him or fellate him. Why does everyone keep saying you don't give up on a QB after year 3? Is there something in Sanchez's contract I don't know about that says if he figures it out in Year 4 or 5 he'll automatically resign with the Jets? I'm sorry, but when you spend 60% of your contract overhyped, when can we start saying "he is what he is"? I don't understand what the apologists are waiting for. As soon as he does figure it out (which is looking bleak anyway), who says he'll resign with the Jets?? WHAT AM I MISSING?? He's gonna be awesome in Year 6 for someone else. And good for him.
Look, if the guy can learn to protect the ball - worlds of difference in how he is viewed. He has the tangibles. Someone needs to coach him correctly.
Ignoring whether he can or can't do it with the right coaching, he only has 2 years left. 60% of the contract is in the books.
he's not going anywhere next season. they are going to fix some holes and give him one more year. if he does not progress then it will be time to move on. the problem with that is unless it gets so bad where we are 3-13ish its going to be hard draft another starting qb without trading up. it's a vicious cycle that keeps mediocre teams stuck in the middle.
I don't think this thread was needed We just want to see sanchez with a different coordinator because many here believe schotty sucks
its a good thing nobody read the original post or answered the question. lets say he does play "better" next year.... do we resign him and hamstring ourselves for another 5 or 6 years? i say no. i would rather we find someone who we know can do the job or start trying to find someone else we hope can do the job. and no there is NOTHING keeping him here past the end of his contract. wait a second, maybe now that nobody wants him we should sign him long term for cheap so that when he does start to play like a real qb in 3 years we already have hm locked up!!!! yeah yeah i think that makes sense!
It will cost 5 million to cut him and 24 million to keep him for the final two years and that is why it is rumored the Jets are having internal meetings as to what they should do.
You're missing...that there are a ton of examples of quarterbacks who don't turn it on until year 4 or 5, and given Sanchez's playoff performances, the depleting talent around him, and his lack of experience in college, it would be foolish to give up on him unless you get some value for him.
It's a shining example of why the rookie cap is great. I wish we could have signed him for only 3 years and then once we saw this level of performance, we could sign him cheap for next year haha. The issue I have with what you said is that you nailed it. They don't work out until year 4 or 5. Well we have him for 5 years, so 3 of the years were wasted, and now if he figures it out, he'll sign for big money somewhere else.
this was part of my issue i had with trading up to get sanchez. the fact that we invested so much money in a guy who was to be fair completely unproven. a year after we spent 6th pick money on gholston. i was also very concerned about him being a little injury prone, he has proven that to be a non issue. although he seems to come off in pain constantly which makes me think he may be a bit of a drama queen. not that it matters. its been 3 years. he still hasnt figured it out. and yes if he figures it out next year we will have to pay dearly again to keep him. we have paid him huge money and yes we could have used some of that money to fill some other holes. to trade up to 5 to draft a 1 year starter from a team that has the best personel in college football and pay him a shit ton of money i thought was a bad idea. it was a huge risk and now here we are 3 years later and we have no idea if he will be a top qb. so yeah the he is only in his third year garbage needs to stop, he is 3/5th of the way through his rookie contract which we paid a ton of money to him for. and we have absolutely no guarantee that if he actually does figure it out that he will come back. so we could end up with a guy who plays well for 2 years and then says buh bye... or worse we could end up with a useless qb who cant make decisions or stand up and step up in the pocket under pressure.
If Sanchez figures it out and turns into this teams QB, he will not sign anywhere else. He loves the life too much.
Yeah, mediocre ones like Trent Dilfer. Look at his numbers through 3 seasons. He eventually became adequate. What elite QBs took till year 4 or 5 to "turn it on" as you said? Terry Bradshaw and Dan Fouts might be the best QBs to support your case but I am drawing a blank on anyone else at this moment. Bradshaw was in and out of the lineup his first few years. Fouts had his first good season in 1976 (his 4th year).
2 more years at least. If they have a new OC and Sanchez plays bad next year, they will blame Sanchez' performance on "adjusting to the new OC".
Aikman was in the playoffs in his 3rd year and looked good. Favre was good during his first year of starting (2nd season overall). Brees was Sanchez-like during his first two seasons of starting and was really good his 3rd season of starting (4th overall). Too many pro-Sanchez Jets fanz are myopic. This idea that Sanchez needs 5, 6 years to get rolling is patently ridiculous. At least to me it is, anyway.
ok now lets look at how many guys who have not been able to read defenses, put the ball in front of the receiver and not fold up like a folding chair under pressure have NOT made it as a qb? and then how many franchises have wasted 5 years to figure out that a guy who cant do those things is not the right guy?
All these "dump Sanchez" people sound exactly like the "dump Eli" people sounded the year before the Giants won the Super Bowl. They also sound just like the people who wanted to trade Drew Brees in San Diego. Now he's one of the best QBs in the game. It's common for a QB to take time to develop and sometimes they need to find a coaching staff that knows how to use them. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks this team needs a new OC and some O-line help before we can determine what kind of QB Sanchez will be.
