This team can't win the tournament if Burnett can't be relied upon.... he's been awful since the end of May.

Let Burnett pitch all 9 innings tonight and save the bullpen. And if it destroys his arm, he'll retire and we won't have to deal with his obscene contract. Hooray!

Of course, with a decent defensive shortstop, the score is tied at one, and Burnett gave up that one run on a ground ball single.

Cervelli's defense has really been on point tonight. What, two passed balls? And a dropped pitch that prevented a throw to second.

At least his offense makes up for it.

ETA: Make that three passed balls, one allowing a run to score. Christ, his defense has been awful lately.

tough night for the Yankees? Tough month. This team has been garbage for 4 weeks. Time to be alarmed? I think so. Little bit.

Meh. Only the veriest of little bits.

If they just play .500 ball from here on out (and please keep in mind that they've played one or two games over .500 ball during the past four weeks in which they have been, in your words, "garbage"), they will finish the year with 95 wins.

If they don't get into the playoffs with 95 wins, so be it. But I still like their chances. A lot.

Burnett is the first Yankee pitcher to have 10+ losses with an ERA over 6 over a 15 start timeframe.

Swish boo'd heavily upon his introduction at the plate and responds with a 2 run HR. Nice.

John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman should be boiled in oil.

Can we just leave Girardi in Chicago?

    seconded.

I listened to part of the first inning today because I guess I'm part-masochist. They spent it complaining over and over about the broadcast booth. Normal people might say once or twice they didn't like the booth because of how it's situated. Not these two. They spent more time whining about the booth than they did actually commenting on the game they were supposed to be watching.

But hey, when they pay attention they usually get some pretty basic facts wrong, so you're sunk either way.

Sadly enough, Yankees/White Sox is the only matchup where Sterling isn't the most annoying play by play guy in the stadium. Hawk Harrelson makes me wish I were deaf.

Great start by Ivan Nova today. He's got a way better curveball than advertised.

oh Im not worried about making th eplayoffs. I agree it would be tough for us not to at this point. Im thinkin big picture. I want Andy to be healthy, I need this idiot Burnett to make about a 180 degree turn...I need Jeter to hit a little bit. I need Alex to have some legs under him.

Well that's the only thing that really matters.

The rest of the stuff has too much variance to bother with having any serious expectations. Case in point: look at what Burnett did in Game 2 of the WS last year. Would you have expected that from him? Of course not. That's why all you gotta do is get to the dance. After that, who knows what will happen?

Regardless, anytime you have the best record in baseball, it's hard to feel too "alarmed" about your team's performance, even if it has been mediocre of late. And for those who are worried about the rotation, look at it this way... the Yanks probably have a stronger rotation going into this year's postseason than they did going into last year's postseason, even considering the difference in scheduling, and that turned out alright. Would you rather have CC > Pettitte > Hughes > AJ/Vazquez/Nova, and only needing that fourth starter once or twice? Or CC > Pettitte > AJ > Gaudin/Joba/Mitre, and praying you can get by on three?
