Reading an Astro board, Cusick was actually a decent enough prospect. He is 22 years old and is batting over .280 and played in the Cape Cod League which the Fo loves to see so this is an outstanding move. Best to get someone young than nothing at all, and get rid of the Hawkins contract(its 1 year but 3 mill was it?). I love Ed Wade.

If he finds a taker for Igawa, Cashman has made more than enough of a case to get resigned. He's had a hell of a week, I cant help but get giddy heading into tomarrow's deadline.

    another rip off.

Hawkins is TERRIBLE. Who would give up anything for him, even if the Yankees paid off his contract?

Yankees paid at least some of it.

I would love to go back and read how many people here thought it was great when the Yankees picked Hawkins up.

I wonder how bad the pictures are that Cashman has on Houston's and Detroit's GM's are...

I wish Ed Wade was still the Phillies' GM. Trading for Tejada, then refusing to trade away Tejada, then getting Wolf and Hawkins while they're languishing toward the bottom of the best division in the NL. He's not just a bad GM, he's an artist.

Hawkins WAS a great pickup. See, this is how it works... you make low-risk, high-upside deals. If they don't work out... hey, that happens. Doesn't mean it wasn't a good deal.

I'll stand up like a man and admit I thought it was an okay signing. 20/20 hindsight says I was wrong. Big deal. Look around every team in every sport. There are wrong decisions on every club.

That said, I don't care if we got back a bag of dildos for Hawkins. It would have been an equal trade.

Oh stop defending him already. We all know Cashman is the worst GM in sports, and only survives thanks to the larger-than-most checkbook he's allowed to play with.

I wouldn't call a 3.5 million dollar contract low risk... well maybe in Yankee terms, but still

The fact that it was a one-year deal is a lot more relevant than the actual figure in terms of risk, IMO.

I was perfectly fine with the move, because it was a 1 year deal while the Vizcaino deal would've been for multiple years.

Exactly. They got picks in return for giving up Viz, and only committed one year to a middle reliever. A few million is acceptable... it's the going rate... but the length of the contract gave the Yanks a lot of flexibility with the pen. You think they are going to DFA a guy with three years left on his contract?

Not really since he brought him in with that horrible contract in the first place.

Hawkins was horrible then and horrible now, there is no upside with a guy that bad.

LaTroy Hawkins ERA+ by year since 2002:

    210, 243, 167, 113, 102, 140.

Never been overpowering in the sense of K-rates, but he's been a very solid relief pitcher for a while now and was great at getting ground balls last season at Coors. It was a good signing.

What? That was a good deal? Explain that one, it's a classic. You all attempt to defend the deal because of the term. In case you didn't notice we needed a bullpen and somebody to replace Vizcaino.

Hawkins traded to Astros for a pile of dog shit. Advantage Yankees.
