The Yankees have won 3 straight and took 3 of 4 from Detroit! Lets keep it rolling on the West Coast! Monday: Hughes vs. Moseley Tuesday: Mussina vs. Escobar Wednesday (Great Match-Up): Pettitte vs. Lackey
Looks like we lose the middle game so we will have to rely on a clutch performance by Andy to take the series.
You beat Detroit... If you can comeback and take this series, i'll nominate you to start the next few series threads even if their is a series loss... Impressive stretch.
Yankees have not had the best success agaisnt the Angels so will be a interesting series. Looking forward to it
Moose pitches well the majority of the time with a bad start mixed in. For example his last start he gave up 6 ER but his previous 4 starts he gave up 2 Er, 2 ER, 3ER, 1ER. Then a bad start giving up 6 and then again a run of good performances 3,3,1,2 ER respectively. So after he had a bad start last outing he should go on a nice run of 3-4 games.
Whoa whoa whoa.... just slow down, buddy. This is Mussina we're talking about. You're supposed to overreact to the bad performances, while ignoring the good ones. What's with this common sense and statistical evidence? Come on, man. Get with the program.
Absolutely right. Well, when Mussina is off, his stuff isn't very good, and it's easy for him to get knocked around and have it look like he's finished. When he pitches well, it isn't always pretty, even if the other team isn't getting many hits, and you know he won't give you length.
What do you define as "length"? Is six innings no longer considered a good outing? Look at his game log for the past fifteen starts: 5.0 7.2 6.0 6.0 5.2 4.2 6.0 6.0 7.0 5.0 6.0 7.2 6.0 5.0 6.1 That's ten out of fifteen starts of at least six innings. (Incidentally, Pettitte has had ten out of last fifteen starts where he's gone at least six innings, too.) Moose is no longer a workhorse, of course (of course), but I don't think you can say, "Oh, that Moose won't get out of the fifth inning," either. He's been alright. When he's bad, he tends to be BAD. And I think that might play into people's perception of him. He doesn't have the stuff to get by on off nights anymore. If he's not locating his pitches, he will get destroyed. ETA: I guess I just think this whole "Moose is pitching... OMG WE'RE GONNA LOOOZE!!!1!" attitude is a little misplaced.
3 out of 15 starts with more than 6 innings. Pettite is 9 out of his last 15. Wang is also 9. Even Clemens is 5 outings in his 14 starts of more than 6 innings. 6 is the bare minimum you want from your starter if he has anything. Granted, I am not a Mussina hater. at least as not as big of one as most, but it's near-impossible to make the argument that Moose gives us any length. The 4.76 ERA and 1.39 WHIP don't help the cause either.
We won a series against them just before the break so maybe our fortunes against them are changing. As far as Mussina is concerned I'm just as worried about facing Lackey on Wednesday. As usual, it will all come down to our bats. It isn't like LA is tearing the ball up anymore then anyone else is right now (except us). No doubt the bullpen will be essential in this series and for once I couldn't be happier about that.
Tonight's game is nationally televised tonight on ESPN 2 for those who don't live in NY or don't get the Yes! Network.
I'm gonna try staying up. I used to love 10pm games because I used to go to bed considerably late, so it was a nice way to spend the dark hours. But now with work, it's pretty difficult to be up anytime after 12:30, and even that's pushing it.
I'm gonna be up for the game... unfortunately, I'll probably be studying while trying to watch. One, I count four starts, not three, over six innings out of his past fifteen (and his two before those fifteen were into the seventh as well). Two, I'm not making the argument that "Moose gives us any length" on a consistent basis. It's a subtle difference, but I was just contending your point that we "know" he's NOT going to give the team length. More than a quarter of the time, he's going into the seventh. Two thirds of the time, he's giving you at least what you call the "bare minimum." The problem is, like I've said before, when Moose goes down, he tends to go down hard, and that makes it easy for people to say, "Moose is teh suXX0r!" ETA: Yeah, the ERA isn't good. But my contention wasn't about overall performance, just about the claim that we know he won't give the Yanks any length from his starts.
