Wrestling really isn't my thing, but I know alot of you will most likely like this...

WWE All-Stars

Wrestling games have an audience of dedicated fans who jump at the opportunity to pitch their favourite good guy against their favourite bad guy every year - but unless you really care how accurate each wrestler's haircut and underpants are, they're actually rather clumsy and dull to play.

THQ's latest official WWE game looks beyond the usual hardcore fans and brings fast-paced arcade fun back to the wacky world of 'sports entertainment', mixing current and classic wrestlers to also appeal to those older lapsed fans who still think it's called 'WWF'.

80s stars Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan and Jake 'The Snake' Roberts mix it up with 90s legends The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin as well as today's biggest characters - John Cena, Triple H, Randy Orton and the like. And of course The Undertaker is there, still Tombstoning after more than 20 years.

They all look like cartoon sketches of themselves with Desperate Dan chins, pneumatic shoulders and gravity-defying moves. This actually makes it feel a lot more like real-life pro wrestling than the more serious WWE games: We're used to seeing video game characters jump off things, throw people and do flying kicks. While it's amazing to see a real-life human do these things, it doesn't have the same impact when a video game character does it.

So here, instead of just picking someone up and dropping them on their back, characters fly in the air, spin around in slow motion and slam bodies to thundercrack sound effects as shockwaves tear across the ring. It activates the "Whoah!" part of your brain, the same way a real-life backflip might.

Instead of being a 'wrestling simulator', which is what the 'Smackdown vs Raw' games basically are, this definitely has the feel of a classic arcade game - there's more in common with 'Street Fighter IV' than other wrestling games.

The best thing about the fighting action is the emphasis on reversals. Tap the right button just as someone attacks you and you reverse it back on them. Anyone who's watched WWE knows how exciting these moments can be, as a seemingly up-against-it wrestler dramatically turns a big move against his opponent at the last minute. It gets you screaming and cheering just the way a wrestling game should - but the way they never normally do.

'WWE All-Stars' doesn't have the same obsessive-compulsive detail as the long-running 'Smackdown vs Raw' series but it captures the over-the-top, action-packed spirit of wrestling better than they ever have.
