Guys, almost every December, I do my 1st mock draft. It gets all of us starting to think about next April and players that the Jets might be interested in. These are players that I like and think they could easily fit into the Jet's system and fill some needs. Please take this with a grain of salt, since it's waaaaaay early and the draft is 4 months away. No one knows exactly what round these players will be drafted, it's my best guess as of right now. IMO, the Jets will get only a 3rd Rd pick for Vilma, and will have to forfeit their 4th rd pick. The Jets will recoup a 4th Rd from Washington for Pete K. I expect the Jets' to easily make the playoffs and therefore giving GB our Rd 2 pick. D-Rob will not even bring a sack lunch. I expect the Jet's to go after a DE in Free Agency....Canty is a possibility. If the the Jets don't sign a DE.....Tyson Jackson in Rd 1 would be a good choice. Rd 1.......Clint Sintim LB, Virginia.......(6'3" 255) this kid is a football player. A player that stands out head and shoulders when you watch Virginia . Sintim is always around the ball and does everything well... can get after the QB, drop in coverage, and stout against the run. He sheds blockers very well , and can easily move to the inside in our 3-4 next to Harris. Accustomed to the 3-4 at Virginia. Our middle needs help and Sintim would be a good fit. Should be available in the mid to late 20's. Rd 3..(via New Orleans).....Curtis Taylor S, LSU..........Big safety who was a bright spot in LSU's secondary. I believe Taylor replaced Landry and has been very consistent. Has good size and punishes people. Could easily be a starter next to Rhodes in the near future. The lack of depth and inconsistent play by Elam and Smith is a worry. Rd 3.......Mo Massaquoi WR, Georgia.......A really like Mo, he has good size (6'2") and seems to make plays when the Bulldogs needed a Big play. Massaquoi will probably never be a #1 WR, but should be a solid #2. I don't believe Tangini will ever spend Rd 1 money on a WR....it isn't their style. I'm not a big fan of using a RD 1 pick on a WR. Rd 4 (via Washington)......Kory Sheets, RB, Purdue.....The Jet's need another RB in the mix and Sheets seems to be a good fit. 6'0" 205 lbs and has been one of they few playmakers for a disappointing Boilermaker season. Would be a good compliment with Jones and Washington. I'm certain Keller would love to have Kory as a teammate. The only knock on Sheets....he's very out spoken and calls out his teammates......which can also be a plus to light a fire under someone's ass. Sheets stock is rising and may not be available in rd 4, let's see how many underclassman RBs declare. Rd 5.....Ryan Palmer CB, Texas........solid longtime starter for Texas. I would have liked to get a CB earlier, but impossible to fill all needs. Seems to have good skills in coverage and run support. Jets might look at CB in Free agency. Rd 6.....Jaimie Thomas OG, Maryland......BIG BODY..335 lbs and a very smart player(on the field and Classroom) who has been a rock for the Terps. Very intelligent player, which will provide needed depth. Maryland usually produces some good linemen. Rd 7...Chris Pizzotti, QB, Harvard........QB depth, big kid at 6' 5". Will Favre be around next season??? I expect the Jet's to bring on a Veteran, if Favre is gone. I really like Ratliff, but may not be ready to go in 09. I'm not sure if KC has what it takes to be a NFL starter.
drafting a QB in back to back drafts? I'm saying it right now, I have yet to look at draftr prospects for this year. so take any draft related information from me as basic what you hear on TV stuff at this point. I have no problem drafting a qb HIGH this year. I hate drafting late round qb's. If you need a new third string guy, get him through FA or post draft. I think late round QB's pan out less than any other position (PLease correct me if im wrong on this) This is most likely because Qb is the most important position on the field, so every single team is looking directly at every top QB scruitinizing them more than any other postion. So less mistakes are made in terms of letting great players slide. So with a seventh round pick, I would much rather draft a guy who is a hard nosed Football player! somebody who just doesnt have elite measurables (those guys get drafted high due to "potential") but just knows how to go out there and make plays on the field. These are the guys who develop into quality depth on a team, and if they don't have it, it was just a 7th round pick anyways, they dont get payed squat so they can be cut with ease. Unlike guys like Gholston, who to date has been horrible and less than useless on special teams, the true football players, just go out there and get the shit done.
Drafting a QB with a High draft pick doesn't guarantee he will be a great player and starter. I mentioned that if Favre is gone next year, the Jets will need to get a Vet. IMO, Ratliff may have a future, but will Tanny bank on KC, Ratliff and Ainge....I doubt it. My Rd 7 QB is for depth with the assumption Favre or a Vet is on the Roster. It's only a Rd 7 pick, I wouldn't get worked up over it. Most players don't even want to get drafted in Rd 7, would rather sign with a team of their choice.
I agree with Jetsrule about drafting late round QB's and I also disagree with the original poster about selecting a WR being that we are deep at WR. I have two questions... 1) Does anyone have any info on our backup RB Marcus Mason they could share. From the background info i've looked up he seems to be a very promising prospect. 2) Has anyone looked into whether there would be enough cap room if Favre retired to even attempt to pick up McNabb?
Clint Sintim is a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE -- he doesn't project well inside. He uses his speed/athleticism to get to the QB from the 3-4 OLB spot and to cover guys on the outside. Putting him inside and is kinda like putting Vernon Gholston who is a hand-in-the-dirt DE in a 4-3 in at 3-4 OLB. Wait a second...
we have WR depth but at the same time we lack a true #1 Coles has slipped and that has decreased Cotcherys effectiveness as the #2.I like sintim but we need a true ILB we have plenty of OLB's already we dont need another who can play both
I like the Massaquoi pick a lot, and I think one of the 3rd round picks is a good place to get a safety. But I think we should target Brandon Spikes as our ILB, and if he's not available, we should look in to drafting a QB (Mark Sanchez, if he declares)
I know Sintim is an OLB........he can play inside, he has all the physical tools to play next to Harris. In fact, Groh has switched Appleby and Sintim in certain defensive plays. Both Appleby and Sintim are relatively the same size, what makes Sintim more valuable, is his being stout and coverage.he's the entire package. Also, Mangini can have some flexibilty with Sintim. I'll never be sold on a high pick for a WR......a #1 Wr is nice , but not as important as having many effective weapons. In fact 50% or more of Rd 1 WR are truly busts and even more never become a #1 Wideout. How many teams have a true #1 WR.......maybe 10. True # 1 WRs don't get you to the Super Bowl....a Smart QB, great defense and no turnovers......get you to the playoffs and beyond. Check Cotchery's stats...........he has 58 catchs for 700 yards this year.....only slightly off last year's pace and well ahead of 2006. Keller has absorbed a big share of the attempts this season, compared to the TEs last year. Cotchery should pass 1000 yards.
Chad Jones replaced Laron Landry at LSU...but Curtis Taylor is a solid prospect. The second round is a little high for Taylor - he could end up being like Jonathan Zenon and go undrafted. I'm scared of Mohammed Massaquoi...he reminds me a lot of former Georgia WR Fred Gibson. Clint Sintim is a guy I really like - Spikes will probably be gone by the time our first comes, so Sintim is the next best inside backer. I like the positions you're going after, just some of the players are over-drafted. I'll be putting out a mock soon...thanks for starting off the mock-season WW
I still think Sintim is going to be a 3-4 OLB. He might have the physical tools to play anywhere but the same can said for any LB in the NFL. Just because you have superior physical tools doesn't mean you can move inside. An inside backer in the 3-4 has to be able to take on and shed blocker very well because they don't have 2 DTs in front of them occupying the linemen. I'd rather get a guy like Jasper Brinkley in the mid-rounds who has fallen off the "elite radar" because of his injury last year. I thought I started off the mocks...a while ago... do you really think the Jets will only get a 3rd for Vilma? He has been playing at a pro bowl level and been one of their only defensive stand outs and he is likely to be resigned. And we lose a 4th?
I'll be putting up a mock tonight that includes Jasper Brinkley (I've been talking about him since 2006) - you did start off the mocks, but no one seemed to care except for a select few. I THINK this is the deal: The Jets will most likely get a second rounder for Vilma, but they will lose their 4th if the Saints give us their second rounder.
Thx Electric! I have Taylor in Rd 3....no Rd 2 pick cause of the favre deal. Looking forward to you're mock.
GM, Electric...............the Jet's may get a second rd pick from New Orleans, but than New Orleans has to give the Giants a 1st rd pick for Shockey in 2010. Everything is contingent on the Saints signing Vilma. The deal for Vilma was a 3rd or 2nd, based on Vilma meeting critea and signing him, with the Jets giving up their 4th rd pick. The Shockey deal for a 2nd rd pick, thru a monkey wrench into the conditional picks for the Jets. The Saints would be insane to let Vilma enter free Agency.
