My first go at a Jet's mock draft. I have the Jets picking in the 20's of Rd 1, things can change. Some parameters: Jets resigning Fitz to a two year deal. Geno Smith is gone. Jets will lose either Ivory or Powell to UFA. Mo Wilk gets the franchise tag. D'Brick will either restructure or be gone. It's time for te Jets to finally address OT early in the draft. 1) JASON SPRIGGS, OT, INDIANA.............Experienced LT. Stock is on the rise and I believe will be a better Pro than Michigan State's and OSU's OTs. 2) TYLER MATAKEVICH, ILB/OLB, TEMPLE........Relentless player that loves football and a student of the game. Very instinctive and should be given more credit as a good athlete. Can play any LB position, but projects better inside. From Todd's school!! 3) STERLING SHEPARD, WR, OKLAHOMA.....One of my favorite players in this draft. Undersized, but tough player, isn't afraid to mix it up. Projects as a slot player, but can go over the top and stretch defenses. Smith's ACL isn't going to 100% healed by training camp. Reminds me of Randall Cobb, a player the Jets showed interest years back before Green Bay drafted him. Great pedigree, his late Father was a good player. STOCK ON THE RISE 4) KAREEM HUNT, RB, TOLEDO........Ivory or Powell will be gone, we need a replacement. Hunt has shown he is a man among boys in the MAC. 5) KEVIN HOGAN, QB, STANFORD......Smart player to be 3rd QB behind Fitz and Petty. Geno is gone. I like the idea of taking a developmental plaer with Fitz at the helm. 6) Morgan Burns, CB, Kansas State.........Depth and special team player. Has shown some solid play this year...stock on the rise. 7) Fitz trade..........I believe this pick (conditional) can turn into a 6th based on his playing time and quality of play. We will have to wait and see. IT's early and things will change.....comments welcome.
My first thought was, why would we take an undersized slot guy when we have kerley that we don't use? Other than that, can't argue with the positions taken at all
We need a kick returner. You not sold on drafting the kid from Western Kentucky, he should be available in the 4th to 5th rounds don't you think? Thought you were a big fan and he had a really good year.
I 'm still a fan, I was the one who started the Brandon Doughty thread long before most here heard of him. I don't think he will be available in Rd 4 or beyond and wasn't willing to draft a QB in Rd 2 0r 3.
Kerley isn't nearly the player Sterling Shepard is.............think Randall Cobb. SS can play inside, outside and is very physical and explosive.
Yeah that's why I mentioned the guy's name lol, I had no idea who the guy was until that thread came up. Hogan was so damn inconsistent even with a great offensive line in Stanford, I would hope a prospect like Nate Sudfeld is available. Regardless, I like the draft you posted. Especially the first 3 picks.
101, I like Sudfeld, I went for Hogan's smarts, I really don't expect Hogan to be an NFL starter, just a #2 backup. Hogan has underachieved, at times he looks unbeatable and other times darn awful.
Great stuff WW85. Been waiting a long time for this. I've been very high on Jason Spriggs -- he was my 3rd rounder back in August, 2015. Guy has great athleticism & durability. I knew he'd rise up the draft boards well into the early 2nd round & possibly 1st round. I think they'll put him at RT (kicking Breno G. appropriately to the curb) before moving him to LT down the road (I think D'Brick will restructure). I also had Sterling Shepard in my August mock ---- but in the 5th round. I'm ok with Matakevich --- he'll be much more than just a Demario Davis replacement. But dude, ----- we really need an OG. Badly. Might have to consider the 3rd rounder on either of the 2 big risers === Joshua Garnett (Stanford) or Sebastian Tretola (Arkansas).
I never saw your Mock, I wasn't around much this past summer, but it's all good we have 2 of the same players. Spriggs, is probably right now, an early 2nd Rd pick and should move up into Rd 1. I like that he has played a lot of LT. It is a good year for solid OTs, that should translate well in the NFL. Just not any Elite OTs in 2016. Sterling Shepard is a playmaker the Jets really need to compliment Marshall and Decker. I love the Kid's attitude, he's tough as nails and has great hands. OG is a need but you can't fill everything, I was even considering Nick Martin at OG and move to Center to replace Mangold down the road. Martin may be in one of my mocks in a few months. Jets have to draft a RB, because Ivory may want a big payday and we might not resign Powell.
Would really like Hogan in round 5. Think he could be a solid late round QB, especially in this class.
I like where the positions are addressed. However, If we can get a big time OLB in the 1st I say we put off OL to the 2nd. But I really like Spriggs. Aside from him and Hogan I don't know much about the players. I would prefer a bigger WR than Spriggs, looking like Saunders 2.0 in measurables.
Solid mock I've just started working on one myself, hopefully be able to post it by the end of the week. I've been hearing more and more about Spriggs lately so I wouldn't mind it all if we addressed T at that spot. You're right we need another RB and WR to add to this offense. I expect Ivory to be resigned and we add a pass catching back like Spiller ( Gailey) could be signed or we can draft one. I'm assuming D. Smith to be out next year for the most part so pass catcher should be added too
what kind of system does iu run? im leery of tackles from these college spread offenses, they seem to struggle a lot early two notes: i believe mac is quoted as saying that he will ideally draft a 3-4 olb every year. also, now that fitz has played 70% of the snaps, that 7th rounder becomes a 6th thanks for this. i havent paid attention to many prospects this year
WW85, Ever since you mentioned last week that you were getting ready to post your first mock, I've been checking the draft forum in eager anticipation. You didn't disappoint. Excellent job at this point and interesting. I don't know anything about most of the prospects you mention, but like the positions you opted for. I think they're pretty much spot on our needs. In the first round, I'd really like to see the Jets either grab Brick's replacement or a pass-rushing OLB. I don't know anything about the prospects at either position. I think we definitely need to replace Davis in the starting lineup, so that Temple player sounds like he could be a great addition. I especially like the instinctive and relentless comments. I've seen Shephard play a time or two, and he is a very good prospect. I don't recall if he is PR/KOR, however. If he is, great. If not, then I'd hope the Jets would go elsewhere. I think they desperately need a WR who can be their PR/KOR, and also contributed on offense like Lockett of Seattle. There may not be a WR like him in this year's draft, but if there is one even remotely close, I'd hope the Jets grab him, even if it meant taking him in the 2nd round. I'm curious why you think both Ivory and Powell will be gone. I can see Ivory wanting a big contract, but would think the Jets would want to keep both. Are we tight against the cap? I don't recall that being the case, although with Brick's contract and having to re-sign Mo, we quickly could be. In any event, I definitely think the Jets need to add another RB even if both Ivory and Powell are here. I'd prefer him to be a scatback type, one who is a great receiver, elusive, and could be the PR/KOR if there isn't a WR that fits that description the Jets like or available at one of their early picks. Like another poster said, I think the Jets need another OG, but as you said, every need can't be addressed in the draft. I think they may bring back Colon, if nothing else, as a backup. He played well this season. They may be counting on Harrison, or they could possibly sign another young, fairly cheap FA OG. What type of back is Hunt? Is he a bigger power back, or smaller, more elusive and a good receiver? I like adding a DB for depth and to upgrade STs. I think they need some love in this draft. In addition, with Milliner being injury prone, and possibly one or more of Cromartie, Walls and McDougle gone, I think adding another CB at that point would be a good move. I've seen Hogan play several times. He is smart, but inconsistent. I think he would be a good addition and someone that Gailey and Fitz could mold into a dependable backup, and maybe even starter. I'm not sure about his arm strength/accuracy, but if memory serves me correctly, he's at least fairly athletic and has good size. Aside from how things always change with the draft following bowl games, off season workouts and the Combine, the only two things I could see dramatically changing at the top of your draft at this point would be if the Jets are disappointed in Petty's progress, and/or perhaps don't see him as their future starter, and if there's a topflight pass-rushing OLB at the Jets pick in round 1. In the first scenario, I could see Mac going with a QB if one falls to the Jets in the 1st or 2nd round that he likes. In the second, I could see Mac getting that pass rusher to help take Bowles' D to the next level. I think even Davis wouldn't look so bad, if the Jets had a dynamic pass-rushing threat opposite of Pace or Mauldin
We know Mike M is going to take the BPA. I believe drafting toward the backend of Rd 1 he will use BPA with common sense for need and there is a very good chance a LB (Ragland, Floyd etc) or OT (Decker, Spriggs etc.) will be available. I think You meant to say Shepard, not Spriggs for the WR. Shepard is nothing like Saunders. Shepard is much more polished and physical attacking the ball. Shepard is a quality person, well spoken, intelligent and understands his importance in Norman, OK. I can understand You wanting a bigger WR and Gailey seems to like bigger wideouts. Shepard plays big and there are numerous WRs in the NFL that aren't that big that are very successful.
Thanks for your comments!! FWIW, here's a link for all the bowl games. All of the players will be in Bowl games. Toledo and Temple play each other, but Kareem Hunt may not be 100%, but you will get to see Matakevich. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiZ0JnpgeTJAhUW8GMKHXTED_oQFggcMAA&url=http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/college-football-bowl-schedule.php&usg=AFQjCNHaQavmPmvfRf44aXS5d4LViI-mQA I'm certain either Ivory or Powell will be gone, both are UFAs. David Harris has a few more years and I agree Davis might be gone. I don't see us drafting a QB early with us hopefully signing Fitz for a few years. It's too early to see if the Jets will be disappointed with Petty before the draft. So far the Jets seem to like his attitude and progress learning the system. Like I mentioned to another poster, if I had to guess, OT & LB will be the top 2 picks, just not sure of which will be first.
Good draft WW85, don't care much for Hogan though. Rather get a bonified blocking TE for the next 3-5 years to back up Amaro who may not excel at blocking coming off a lost year. Kellen Davis gives no punch on offense and Cumberland blows, a blocking TE would go such a long way.
Concur. I have zero interest on spending a draft pick, any draft pick, on your future potential back up QB. There are too many jags floating around that could play that role where I'd hate to waste a pick where you could actually find a starter at any other position. If you are drafting a QB to be anything other than your starter some day, it's a waste. _
Yah I meant Shepard. I have to look into him more. It may be a thing that he plays big but that is in college. It's just risky to take a 5-10 receiver. While he could be successful you can't teach height. Getting someone bigger seems to be more in their favor to be more physcial and have the highest point advantage.
I don't think it's a waste....tell that to Tom Brady....he was never going to be considered a starter when drafted ....shit happens. Geno will be gone and we need another QB on the roster, having two, Petty & Hogan, one could develop into an eventually starter, for 4th & 5 th Rd picks.
