There's been a lot of talk in Cleveland about Romeo getting fired after this season. Given our problems with the defense, and a lot of people's frustration with Bob Sutton around here, would you support this team hiring Romeo back as next year's defensive coordinator? And this is strictly hypothetical. I think it's highly unlikely Romeo would ever take a job to work for a former pupil who is more than 20 years his junior. But what about from Mangini's perspective? Does this young coach want one of his former bosses looming over his shoulder? Is that too large of a shadow?
Obviously hypothetical, but a very interesting question. Not sure what the relationship was like between Mangini and Crennel, but he definitely has a lot of experience with this defensive scheme. I'm sure he wouldn't be out of a job long....
Mangini loves Crennel, Crennel loves Mangini. Which means next year he will be our DC. That way Mangini will have a coach that is on the same page as him, and knows 100% what Mangini is looking for. Crennel mentored Mangini and im sure he would love to be reunited with his apprentice
Assuming Sutton gets the heave-ho, and I wouldn't make that assumption at this point, I would hope that Mangini would feel strong enough to hire whoever the heck he wanted as his DC and not worry about whether or not he might get over-shadowed by his choice. All the indications at this point are that Mangini is his own man and capable of making the right choice.
Just heard another report on the FAN about how the coaches were talking about their tight friendship today. Well, I would be all for it - that is if Sutton is demoted or fired and the other thing happens in Cleveland.
I would love to see Crennel become the DC. It'd be great. And I think him and Mangini have a strong relationship, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
If you feel you can improve the position, why not? In 2004 they came within a FG of the AFC Championship Game, and Hackett was fired right after the season.
It's only Crennel's 2nd season...So he'll have at least one more year in Cleveland to build something.
If he was available and willing to work as DC, I'd love to see him come back here, but I don't think he'll be available.
NY Times had article that they are very good friends. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/25/sports/football/25crennel.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
what he said...that front office isn't really giving him much to work with offense-wise...but i'd love for him to come on over here
Very different. I'm not saying it can't happen, IMO it is highly doubtful that any coaches will be fired after ONE successful season. We all know Sutton is not the problem with the D, lets get him some talent and then we'll see what he can do. Besides IMO it is also highly doubtful that Crennell gets fired this year. I would think he gets one more year at least..
Kind of moot, I doubt he will be fired. I've seen improvements with the Browns, just it's not quite as fast as people want it I guess. He might not be John Fox, Marvin Lewis, Lovie Smith or even Mangini level, but Crennel still looks like he's a lot better than Saban.
