I hate when I hear Woody act like a football person. You are an owner, you approve and sign the checks and wear your Jet hat with a suit to hide your bald head like Paul Simon does. UGHHHHH!!!

    Quote of the Week I

"When we were looking at taking Mark, I studied all the great generals to see what those men were like early in their careers, see how they reacted. It's all about how they reacted in battle, what happened when the action was really live. You see that in Mark, his calm.''
-- New York Jets owner Woody Johnson on rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, who agreed to a five-year, $50-million contract with the team on Wednesday.

I realize you get excited about your players, particularly about the man you believe is the next long-term quarterback in franchise history, but that is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard an owner say. I can name 300 quarterbacks lauded as great leaders with terrific field presence who have come out of college football in the 25 years I've covered the NFL.

In fact, if a quarterback WASN'T a strong leader with a good presence about him, he shouldn't have been picked high in the first round. If indeed Johnson "studied all the great generals,'' and looked for traits of Sanchez in them, I hope he kept his thoughts to himself. The following quarterbacks in recent years have been well-respected by teammates, calm when the action began and renowned as terrific leaders:

    1. Charlie Batch
    2. Patrick Ramsey
    3. Tim Rattay
    4. A.J. Feeley
    5. Andrew Walter

I remember being in Washington the day Heath Shuler was drafted in 1994, and Norv Turner raving about his leadership. In fact, Shuler was a terrific presence, well-liked by his mates, and couldn't play a lick. But he went on to win a Congressional seat in North Carolina. I'm sure he'd have fit in superbly in military command.

One man's opinion: You don't help your rookie quarterback in the largest biggest city in the U.S. by building him up as some combo platter of Ulysses S. Grant, Joe Namath and Jonas Salk. The expectations being set up for him are almost Brady-like. I really like Sanchez a lot, and I think he has a good chance to be a very good NFL player. But the first time he throws five straight incompletions, the fans are going to look at him and say, "This is the bum we're paying $10-million a year?''

Woody Johnson...why doesn't he just change his name to Peter Beanpole and end the charade?

At least Woody didn't compare Mark Sanchez to George Patton or Omar Bradley.

Ok on the flip side, name me the last winning QB who's teamates did not respect him as a leader?

How is being a good leader a bad thing?

How about some QB's that are resected as Leaders. Kurt Warner, Ben Rothilsburger, Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady. Its a rare thing wins a team that does not have a strong presence at QB wins a superbowl. The Raven's in 2000 come to mind, but they had perhaps the most dominating defense of that decade in thier winning year. The Bears of a few years ago made it, but were destroyed by the manning lead Colts in the big game. Having a strong leader at QB is a huge deal to a football team.

You can name 300 QB's who were good leaders but did not win. How about nameing 20 QB's who were bad leaders and did? Who were the Rayn Leaf and Geoff George types who took the big prize home?

You still have yet to break down anything about Sanchez's football play to why you think the pick sucked. Not one shred of actual football talk. Nothing about footwork, reading of defenses, accuracy, or even arm strength. Just your simple trollish whining.

I'm sure these owners have more football knowledge than the average fan. First of all, they have direct access to football operations, something that fans don't. Second, these owners probably have advisors on staff to help them understand football so that they 1) don't sound like a complete moron and 2) don't waste their money on complete trash. I highly doubt Woody or any owner for that matter doesn't have someone on the side giving their own opinions as to how good a job their GM and FO are doing. The GM is hired to do a job, but owners don't become rich by putting blind faith in 1 person.

Woody Johnson is lame, and Peter King is twice as lame. And if you combine 'Woody Johnson' and 'Peter King' you get a gay porno.

the continued existance of Al Davis throws this notion out the window lol

lol i get your point though. i think its just the fact theres a total lack of stories. woody simply makes a mediocre reference to appreciate the leadership qualities he thinks sanchez has and then someone decides to take the word generals and turn it into satire and bash him cause hes an easy target.

its the offseason though and this is the boring shit that comes with it.

My post was a mock on Woody, nothing to do with Sanchez. I said my piece with the Sanches pick, he's a Jet now, signed sealed and delivered. I am rooting for him to do great. BTW, get laid

Maybe Woody's lesbo daughter can hook up with King's fat daughter.

Pennington is one of the better leaders in the game today, and widely respected by his teammates. Woody ran him out of town.

It's clear to me Woody wants flash more than leadership, making his comments trite.

I truly hope Sanchez wasn't a Woody pick, and rather a scouting/coaches pick. We'll never really know, but it will all be irrelevant if Mark can play well at this level.

I agree completely. In my opinion though, Sanchez was the safest QB in the draft and regardless of why they chose to draft him, I'm happy with the decision.

No Way! It was a dumb thing to say.

BTW, BB wouldn't let Kraft say that. My guess is that kraft runs anything he would say about football by him before he says anything!
