The more I think about it, the more I embrace the idea of drafting Pettigrew in round 1. Why? Well, everyone and their mother is looking for the Jets to draft a WR with the perfect/rare combination of size and speed. I'm all for that as well, but honestly, those guys are damn near impossible to find.

Hmmm... wait a second, didn't the Jets just select a talented pass catcher who goes 6'2", 240 lbs and runs a 4.5 40-yard dash?! Hmm. And what's more, the Jets currently have NOBODY to play the true TE position since the release of Baker. How could we work this somewhat strange situation to our advantage, and perhaps kill two birds with one stone?

Why not add a top-notch true TE in Pettigrew, and really unleash our very own pass-catcher with the perfect/rare combination of size and speed in Dustin Keller. We'd not only have a killer two TE set, but we could always split Keller out wide as well. I really don't see why he can't contribute as a WR as well as TE. The guy absolutely looks the part of a big wideout, ala Vincent Jackson, but with better hands.

Drafting Pettigrew would kill two birds with one stone. It might not sound like a sexy pick, but it is a legitimate direction to go in the draft. Plus, the Jets can still look to add another WR in a later round as well.

Yeah, so I misspelled "Dustin" in the title of the thread. Not sure how to go about fixing this. Oh well!

Are you sending baker on long route?? is he beating the coverage?? Does he have to lose weight to play WR??? Does he have to learn a whole new scheme froma different position??? is he tall enough?? i think he is fine where he is thats what we drafted him for... we can get a blocking TE later in the draft theres some good ones out there

Keller has all the attributes to play receiver, so this idea is not a bad one, he creates mis matches playing TE though. I wouldn't be against doing this, especially if we run a lot of 2 TE sets that i expect we will.

This question belongs on a Patriots message board.

As far as the OP, it's at least an interesting point. I like using Keller out of the TE position because of the considerable mismatches he draws. I'd rather have him up against a LB/3rd CB/S than against a team's top two corners, but it's something to consider.

No offense, but that's perhaps one of the worst nicknames I've ever seen.

It would be a good idea to line Keller up as a WR in some situations but he's the perfect TE for the simple fact, he's faster than any LB and bigger than just about any safety in the league and thats the reason why he creates a lot of problems for opposing D's (Just like Gates) I like him @ TE but always wondered how he would do @ WR.

I'm just against drafting two TE's with our first pick two years in a row. Im sure we can find solid run blocking TE's during the later rounds and if we REALLY need a run blocking TE, Anthony Becht is a FA I believe.

Well, we DEFINITELY need a blocking TE. If the plan is to let Keller handle the blocking responsibilities, our run game is in trouble and Keller's receiving production will take a hit as well.

All too often is seems that blocking TE is a revolving door position in the NFL. That's why I'm sorry to see Baker go. It just opens up another revolving door. I wouldn't mind filling it with a legitimately talented all around young player like Pettigrew and not worrying about finding some diamond in the rough to play blocking TE every single offseason.

Plus, Pettigrew can make plays in the red zone too. He stands 6'6" I believe.

Thanks, then it's onto the later rounds because I think it's insane to draft two TE's back to back with 1st round picks when our team has other holes to fill.

No, no and no to drafting another TE in the first round. Enough already. We're a team with enough holes to fill that a TE in the 1st again is ridiculous. When our number comes up and the best player available is there at a position of need, we take them. The last thing we need to do is start getting real cute with ourselves. WR, a DE to get up-field, QB and possibly a RB are way, way more important than another TE...

Yes, those are all needs. I agree. However, we pretty much have zero tight ends on the roster right now. Really shouldn't overlook this fact.

It would be rough to see another TE drafted in the first round...but having these two young studs would probably mean you will not have to see a TE drafted in the the first 4 rounds for the next 10+ years.
