Charlie Casserly loved the pick and Mike Lombardi called it the best value pick in round one. Those sentiments are pretty much universal as best I can tell, and why not, who in their right mind considered the possibility of Kyle Wilson sliding to the NY Jets? Who could have imagined Kareem Jackson and Devin McCourty would be taken higher? Two good corners to be sure, but ahead of Kyle Wilson, are you kidding me? I read a couple of early grades .. CBS, NFL.com, etc .. and the general feeling is the Jets pulled off a coup. In fact the term I keep hearing is .. THE RICH GOT RICHER .. and when has anyone ever said that about the Jets? hmy: Anyway, Kyle Wilson was the highest rated available defensive player on my board when the Jets went on the clock, #23 Overall in my TOP 100, and that's probably because I over-rated Clausen (QB) and Campbell (LT) due to positional value. So needless to say the Jets took the BAP in my view who was essentially a steal at 29 OBTW ... Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson No team in football has three better corners and the Jets franchise has never even approached so much talent at CB in its entire existance, and you just know Rex Ryan is going to be RUN & PASS BLITZING from the time he leaves the team bus! Anyhow, those are my feelings for whatever its worth. Now get me Linval Jospeh in RD 2 and I'll be popping that bottle of expensive champipple I've been saving. Actually I've been saving it for when the Jets win the SB, but another heist like Wilson in RD 2 and, well, why wait.
Add Lowery and the samething can be said for the set of 4. Now that Odrick is officially off the board, I jumping on the Joseph bandwagon. Hopefully he lasts to the bottom of the 2nd.
How Great is this? Revis Island & Wilson  All you have to do now is put a little black "crow" on the island too
Why do you think that Kyle Wilson dropped so far? His height? His speed? The other prospects fit their team's schemes better? Obviously since he's a Jet, I'd like to think he was the best CB in the draft, but there has to be something. I personally thought he was coming off the board first or second behind Haden so I never even considered him a possibility.
If the Jets had the 14 pick they'd have taken Wilson there. This was like the no trade-up trade-up. I like the pick just because our corners were the main reason we lost the big lead to Indy in the AFC championship game. We couldn't come back because of the Greene injury but we lost an 11 point lead because after Revis nobody else could cover for their life and even Revis got shakey trying to hold things together.
Kareem Jackson is more of a physical corner - a lot like Dunta Robinson, who the Texans just lost. I think he fits into their scheme perfectly. The Gaytriots had no business taking McCourty ahead of Wilson. Belichick said he's a "four down player", which means he's got special teams value. Kyle Wilson had a 50/50 shot of going in the top ten. We got a steal.
Well Gil Brandt and Mike Mayock both had him rated as the #2 CB as well, ahead of Jackson & McCourty, and those two guys really know their business. Brandt's track record speaks for itself, but NFL teams want to hire Mayock as well, because he's a former NFL player and they know he really does his homework. Point being, its hard to suggest the draft gurus just made a mistake when those two guys were on board with Wilson too As for why he slid, I don't know
It should be noted Belichick has made some really dumb picks in recent years so this is not a total shock too me. With all the picks the Pats have had in recent years, they could have sustained their dynasty for a really long time if they weren't drafting like crap ... with very little to show for their gazillion draft picks. If they had drafted just a few impact players they might still be the best team in football.
I've been researching this guy for the last 4 hours (had no idea he would be available for us). Really like him. Besides his play on the field, I've listened to a few interviews and he is very well spoken, very confident but not cocky, seems like a really good guy. I guess that surprised me a bit after his bus and all that. Anyway, I'm sure most of you don't are about the off the field stuff but I do. Seems like we got ourselves a steal.
He slid because a lot of people thought that Boise State was playing second tier opponents and it was hard to judge his ability accurately based on that. The Boise State team was so strong collectively that they over shadowed everybody they played against and it was easy for people to look stronger than they really were individually. If you look at the scouting reports on him they're all over the map, with some saying he's a good press corner and others saying he's going to be more suited for zone defenses. I trust Rex Ryan to have sorted that all out in the tape work but there are very few people like Ryan in most organizations (maybe none) and my guess is Wilson seemed risky in a draft full of solid no questions prospects.
BTW, as I said at the outset, Casserly and Lombardi were both NFL GM's and they loved Kyle Wilson too So again, its hard to argue the draft gurus over-rated Wilson when some serious NFL Guys love him too
I deleted that speculation about why he slid because that's what it was, pure speculation, and the bottom line is ... I JUST DON'T KNOW
The counterpoint would be that Gil Brandt had him 21-30 and Nolan Nawrocki, who has been pretty good at calling star power over the years, had him ranked 33 overall. He really was hard to call for the NFL if some guys had him going top 15 and those two had him much lower.
Rob Rang and Tony Pauline, two of the better draft gurus in the business, both had him in their TOP 25 and #2 CB I think you may find a few who had him a little lower, but the general consensus was #2 CB in the draft and TOP 25
I don't think that's it at all. Boise State played some quality opponents and Kyle Wilson had an impact in all of those games. Fresno State, TCU, and Oregon are all good teams. Wilson was also the only corner that shut down Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes. I think Wilson slid because there was better value at other positions. Also, the coin that the Browns flipped landed on Haden's side. K-Dub had a 50/50 shot to go in the top ten... Kareem Jackson fits into Houston's defensive scheme better than Wilson and Belichick just wanted to look smart with the McCourty pick. You can't use that mid-major knock on Wilson when Ryan Mathews went #12 overall and he played for a team that Boise's owned for most of this decade.
Whats all this I keep reading about him being an excellent blitzer ? Theres one highlight of him absolutely drilling a QB but hes got 2 sacks over 4 years. I like the pick, but I just dont see rex being big on being the type to rush corners, thats what safeties are for. Hell people keep comparing this guy to Polamalu, I know hes got the hair wonder if theres any chance of him occasionally lining up at safety if hes really that good at blitzing in addtion to being our nickle corner and all that jazz.
