How about those coaches just didn't do a good job. Willie is doing well for the Mets minus the end of last year and they are getting off to a slow and inconsistent start this year, but he is better than what has graced that locker room for a last decade. Isiah not only destroyed the once respected CBA single handedly, but tarnished a storied franchise in the Knicks. Herm was a show, and didn't take care of the roster correctly- using Parcells' players to do well. Herm also left NY in a really bad way, he burned a bridge when he left here. A guy like Byron Scott is doing an amazing job coaching- i don't see how he is being held to a different standard. Dungy, Lovie Smith, Tomlin-- if Mangini doesn't work out I'd take any of those 3 the second they are available.
Maybe I'm naive, but I just don't see the race issue here. Randolph is the leader of a team that suffered one of the most historic collapses in sports, some of his decisions are just bad baseball plays, that most of us obviously see. Joe Torre and all of his WS rings got ran out of NYC for less. Tom Coughlin was killed in the media before last season, Herm Edwards never faced that much criticism. Maybe it has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the big market media, and results... Maybe I'm just blind.
Maybe Willie is dead wrong, but I can not tell him he can't feel the way he does. He had to interview a ton of times before he got a job, and he was ready and is a good manager. There is no denying that racism does exist in this country, whether it does or does not have anything to do with what Willie has/is going through, I can not tell him he should not feel that way if he does.
racism is alive and well and i am guilty of it myself sometimes. sexism is alive and well and i am guilty of that sometimes too. its just plain hate and it feels good to hate. if every thing i said was published for an audience, drunk or sober, people would hang me out to dry. so lets relax he could have been in just one of those moods
Isiah Thomas single handedly ruined the Knicks for the past couple years... and probably even for a couple more years. As for Herm, he seemed like he wanted out of NY anyways if I remember correctly
Racism? How about one was an AWFUL coach and the other was a liar? Is this a dream or has the country really gotten this PC?
I'm going to have to disagree. I'm a big Mets fan, and have been for many years, and feel that Willie Randolph is an awful manager. His bullpen and in-game decisions are head scratching, his treatment of young players was atrocious, and his team clearly quit on him. And I hate Willie's calm demeanor. If Willie doesn't show the fire as manager how can he expect his players to play with that fire? Willie deserved to be fired last year. His "racism" excuse is a joke. Herman Edwards was fired after a 4-12 season. Isaiah Thomas, if anything, got a pass because for all his misdoings he should have been tarred and feathered. Willie Randolph, accept reality. There is no racism here.
i agree with willie taht there is sometimes what appears to be a different standard. however the 2 morons he used to make that statement did not fail because of race or a short leash by anyone, media, fanbase or ownership. they both sucked and thats the bottom line whether they were white, black or green they were both terrible coaches and isiahs case a pretty poor excuse for a human being. now had he mentioned some other black head coaches who you could say werent given a fair chance ie, ty willingham, art shell and a number of others then he would have made a much better case. now with herm i am sure that some will say he did decently and got shortchanged by alot of people, while i disagree the case can be made. isiah on the other hand i dont think anyone can make any case for him being good for anything that he is involved in at this point.
Herm quit...we got compensated with a 4th round pick...you don't get that when you fire a coach. But I do agree, the race card has no place in this argument. And thanks to 17a and FITM for pointing out that the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. I would hate to think that one of my favorite yankees is willing to stoop to that level to defend his abilities.
I think Joe Torre left because after several years Steinbrenner woke up and remembered he hates Italians.
Willie's problem is not racism, it's that a .600 team is not playing that way and has not been since August last season. I think he's a decent manager and will probably be the Met's manager for a long time but if they keep playing .550 ball he's going to be in danger of getting fired. I do think he has less rope than Bobby Valentine did, if you think about it, and that might be partly due to racism but I think it's more likely because Willie does not have the same gift for endless blather that Valentine did. Sometimes the answer to deflecting a lot of tough questions when you're not doing so well is just to play confuse-a-cat with the media and that's definitely not Willie's strongpoint.
ok well Isiah is pretty much a piece of shit .. after all those years of everything he done, he deserved it.
Herm never faced much criticism?? Is that a joke? He did and he deserved it. I just had to point that out. Now on to Willie. He's told that he better turn it around or else by ownership and suddenly the race card comes out? HMMMMM I'm tired of this shit. Don't hide behind the color of your skin because your incapable of doing a good job in the spotlight. It has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin. It has to do with the fact that your team had the worst collapse in all of baseball history last year and this year after acquiring the best pitcher in baseball, your team is still stumbling. Your bullpen is mismanaged, your team has no life, and nobody is responding to you. Because your black? No sir. Because your management skills are proving the be lackluster. And regardless of whatever Willie may claim if he doesn't turn it around and get RESULTS then he will be fired. Just like every other manager before you that did suceed. Actually lets cite Joe Torree. 4 Rings and still was let go. It was because he's black...Oh wait....
