If we get Williams the whole first round accomplished nothing IMO all we would be doing is replacing something we already had.

Right, but something we no longer have...

And there was no way to keep Abe financially, so getting Williams gives us a viable economic solution for DE.

All you'd gain is 5-6 yrs of youth. He'd get close to the same financially.

I think you would get everything. He is a great pass rusher because of his athletic abilities and he could be a better run stopper than Abe because of his size and weight.

You know, after reading the first post, I think there was an outside chance he may have been talking about DeAngelo and not Mario.

I don't... because he's saying we'd get something we had.

This isn't true. Williams is more like Richard Seymour than JA. He'd be a great pick to complement Ellis and give Mangini flexibility in the 3-4.

It never hurts to add the draft's best defensive player, either.

Taking Williams at # 4 is like keeping Abe and waiting at the podium until # 29 to make our pick.

No QB or DE in round one!

    So what do you suggest?

I agree with the thought, you are gaining a younger and less expensive player in Williams. Without Williams or some lineman with pass-rushing abilities, the defense will be get killed.

Well, you could argue, by selecting a Cutler or Leinhart, we are adding another expensive QB. Do you really need $10-12 million dollars tied in one position?

Except for the fact that Williams would play 3-4 DE and Abraham would try to play 3-4 OLB. But other than that...

Still not worth the drop from #4 to #29. Not even close.

    ABE leaves = Playmaker Leaves
    Williams Arrives = Playmaker Arrives

Williams will cost us 5 Million less against the Cap which means we replace Abe and have enough money left over for at least 1 maybe two top flight starters in FA.

If the Jets take Williams, it has nothing to do with Abraham.

Look, the Jets are going to a 3-4 scheme, and they brought in a 35 year old guy to play in it. They have Ellis on the other side, and they're going to need another big body to rotate in there. Mario Williams size makes him a perfect fit for any defense the Jets choose to run. John Abraham was not.

If you are starting over, the first place you go is the line. The two most talented line prospects available are Williams and D'Brickshaw Ferguson. The smartest move would be to get one of them, provided we're not trading down.

There are several draft experts ang GM's who have said Williams is the best player in the draft, and that includes Bush.

If you agree with moving Abe, this post makes no sense - you need a DE to replace him.

If you don't agree with moving Abe, this post makes no sense - you need a DE to replace him.

Feel free to not agree with moving Abe, but either way, they Jets need a DE to replace him. Whether they should draft Williams or not depends on who is available, and what the team needs, not whether they used to have a player who played the same position.

They could always get a DE in the second round like Wimbley or Lawson or even Kiwanuka with the 29th
