Yep, that’s pretty telling that your top pick can’t even sniff the field. I got slammed for calling this a dumb pick when this team had other needs and it’s apparent now that it was. Good job JD.
I think we all need to get together. 60 of us, one giant mirror, a mountain of snow and we all see who walks out alive.
Well, we could have extended Huff and use 1st round pick on someone that can actually help with offense, which was in dire shit last year. There was a way to do both. Now it's almost certain Huff is gone and we have a guy picked in the 1st round who is a healthy scratch since we don't need him.
I think the Jets were a bit blindsided by the Cowboys gameplan. My guess is they were expecting a run heavy offense, so they benched a guy who only really rushes the passer at this point. Clearly that was a mistake, as they could have used someone to rush the passer. I didn't watch the game that closely, but it didn't seem like Lawson did anything particularly great in the run defense. What a waste of a FA signing.
Reality is we have a lot of DEs that are just not that good of pass rushers. They were 1-on-1 pretty much all night last night and the closest any end got to a sack was JFM's roughing penalty after his redzone bull rush ALMOST got there in time. Our ends are pretty pedestrian pass rushers (as evidenced by pass rush win rate when Q is not in the game being among the worst in the NFL) and if a rookie edge rusher from the top half of the 1st round can't break through and get playing time immediately that is in fact a huge red flag. You don't draft top 15 edge rushers to develop for the future. That's what rounds 3-6 are for.
Wonder how many of the "waste of a draft pick" guys on this thread were also "Look at that spin move" guys during the preseason games.
The Jets have decided to invest in volume of edge rushers to keep them fresh. I think the resources invested in the position group is way overkill at this point. But I think the pass rushing group as a whole is pretty good even as individual entities. Dak just got the ball out fast as hell yesterday.
too short sighted the player everyone claimed was stolen from us by pitt trading up (OT broderick jones) was beat out by a journeyman and hasn't played a snap all year for pitt so......
Agreed on that and it may not have helped in the short term but I still would’ve tried to nab one of the receivers. JSN, Addison and Flowers all look really good for their given teams so far.
This is not entirely accurate. Jones did play a few snaps and got a pretty good PFF grade for these. Of course a small sample size, but who knows how they bring him along, but he may end up starting as soon as tomorrow. Either way it would be good to have a talent of this caliber developing at the position of the biggest need. Tipp also didn't get a starting job, but if he is good, he might come in soon to replace the vet ahead of him and improve the line. Jones could have done the same, there would be some hope to upgrade Duane soon. And now? And speaking of "too short sighted" it might actually line up nicely with Rodgers' return. Could have worked out perfectly. Not like McDonald is helping us a lot now by being inactive. The biggest difference is that we need Tackle a lot more now than a DE and we will need it even more next year with free agency coming. Btw, Dawand Jones, another guy many of us wanted for a trade up (instead of trade down JD executed) when he slipped to 4th round did win a starting job for the Browns, and while couldn't run block for shit, actually had a very good pass block grade of 78. There were definitely opportunities in this draft to get highly ranked Tackle prospects, and JD just didn't.
He played four snaps when I’d guess the starting tackle got hurt. He also couldn’t beat either of those guys out and they’re not exactly world beaters.
Maybe they want to bring him in slow like we with Tipp. I really have no idea. Also Dawand Jones is starting. I do think it would be good for the Jets to have a high talent and upside 22 year old tackle right now on the roster instead of McD or in case of Dawand along with McD. At least we would have some sort of realistic promising option to replace Duane Brown in the near future and certainly for next year when Rodgers is back. Would you like it right now if we had one of these two guys (or both) at least as available options on the roster?
I did not like the pick, but there wasn’t an olinemen worthy where we drafted. We fuckin blew it by swapping picks with GB. I am more pissed that JD did that to get the deal done. He blinked in a game of chicken, we could have gotten Rodgers and an OT.
Well, he did win from the available players and at least in pass pro is doing well so far. I do understand that a DE on rookie deal may be needed next year if we don't resign Huff, but a promising Tackle is also needed next year. AND this year. Given the offense and protection is so bad and has been bad for a while, it seemed obvious where the focus should have been short and long term.
Yeah, because a spin move in an Exhibition game really helped him see the field on Sunday. No knock against the guy but this team had much better needs at the time.
