January 1983 - In a freezing cold playoff game played in Cincy's Riverfront Stadium, the Jets smashed the 'gals 44-17 on Freeman McNeil's 200+ yard rushing day. As some here will recall, the NYJ's were underdogs that day as well. No one thought the Jets had a chance to beat the defending AFC Champs.... No respect then, no respect now! http://www.nytimes.com/1983/01/10/s...211.html?scp=1&sq=Jets Bengals McNeil&st=cse
If the Jets make it past the first round, that's actually a hell of an accomplishment. Rookie QB that's barely old enough to drink. Rookie HC in his first season with the team. The loss of Leon and Jenk who were both huge parts of their respective squad. An OC that thinks football is a rubix cube. Really, it would be amazing.
One of my earliest Jets memories! I think Darrol Ray had a pick 6 (though that term wasn't invented then).
We got down 14-3 after the first couple of posessons that day until the D got going and Freeman had that moster day. That, the following week at LA and San Diego in 2004-05 are our only road playoff wins.
If I recall correctly, McNeil was initially given 211 on the ground, which was later reduced to 202. I can't remember why that happened though. Great great performance by Freeman M.
Absolutely. Just making it to the playoffs makes this a pretty successful season already considering all of those factors.
That's true, there was a 9-yard run by Bruce Harper (#42) that was originally credited to McNeil (#24), then fixed after the game. At the time Freeman would have set the playoff single-game rushing record but losing the 9 yards cancelled that.
Haha, my head is a funny thing. Some shit slips right through it and other shit sticks for life. Unfortunately the shit that sticks doesn't ever make me any money.
Freeman was the man --- MY ATF Jet ... named my puppy after him this summer. Too bad he was hurt so much, but when he was healthy he had some monster games. I could be wrong about this, but I think he still has the most career rushing yards of any back against the hated Dolphins.
Funny thing is, and I'm really trying not to look through green goggles, but I really don't think that we are underdogs at all, this game to me is at evens. No way in hell did Marv Lewis intend to lose the last game, let alone get blown out. I'm sure it will be a closer game with the noise from the Jungle and all, but with the O we have, cadence should not be a problem, boring, workmanlike and playoff material. Bring it !! :jets:
I said a couple weeks ago that if the Jets made the playoffs that would be good enough for me. After walloping the Bengals (who actually played their starters contrary to popular retardation), I think losing this game on Saturday would be disappointing. I won't be making any SOJ threads (not that I ever do anyway) but I would be a lil disheartened if we don't win on Satuday
One of my favorite childhood memories of the Jets. The final score is a little deciving as the game was closer than that score indicated. I have a copy of it on DVD, I haven't watched it in a while- maybe I'll pop it on this week.
