I have my doubts right now. He's out the rest of the pre-season and is questionable for Week 1 already. There have been good reports on Antonio Allen. Not sure how Bush the other young guy is coming along. There is no question a RT is being brought in from the outside on cutdown day and cutting Smith gives Tanny 2MIL to play with as his salary is not guaranteed. That money can be plowed into RT. I realize his ST value and he would be competent as the #3 safety in spot play. Howevery, if they feel the rookie Allen who is getting reps now can play in spots in that third safety role and be competent on ST I'm not sure Smith makes the cut. Don't be surprised if he is gone and my money is on that he will be cut.
There is a 100% chance Eric Smith makes the team Landry has huge ?s in regards to his health. Bell is old Bush and Allen are 6th and 7th round picks. If Eric Smith isnt on this team its either because someone in the FO is fucking retarded, his injury is severe, or because we are incredibly desperate for cap room to sign a big money fa (that doesnt exist atm) Again Smith will be on this team THIS YEAR, absolutely no doubt about it.
their are only two chances he doesn't make the roster. 1. he dies 2. he is traded for a RT he is the only experienced safety on the roster, and considering our safeties have both age and injury issues we need a 3rd guy on the roster who isn't a rookie.
The sun will rise tomorrow and set tonight. Some things just arent that hard to foresee. Smith might not be on the roster NEXT year when his salary balloons (and isnt guaranteed) but getting rid of him at this point simply wont happen.
He's an excellent ST's guy and nice depth but if the Jets need to clear some cap I could see him being moved one way or another.
Well....he is hurt and isn't contributing. Close enough :breakdance: Anyway the point is if he isn't 100% healthy going in to the season then his contribution will be limited so what is the point of keeping him? Tanny has one shot to save the 2MIL at that comes at roster cut down day. After that the 2MIL is burned and you live with it no matter what. Tanny can bring in a higher priced RT or roll the savings into next year where the team can certainly use the space. I had the same feeling about Lowery last year in camp and he ended up being moved.
Contributing in the preseason doesnt really do alot. Holmes, Kerley, Pouha, are all hurt and not contributing. I dont see any of them getting cut. The point of keeping him is our safetys have alot of red flags, and Smith will get PLENTY of snaps this year.
It would be a tough decision to let him go but the best GM's look at the bigger picture and make those tough calls. I for one hope that Tanny makes the tough call and lets him go. The 2MIL saved can roll into next year or be deployed better at RT or other positions. If the staff feels Allen can handle it I hope they make the tough call and move on from him.
Rex would trade his own mother to the Russians if it mean freeing up the last $10 of cap space he needed to sign Revis to a long term deal.
There's one name that comes up in EVERY conversation Tanny has about signing this player or that player and what it will cost....Revis.
His ability to play ST combined with Landry's health issues and two of the safeties being 6th and 7th round picks ensures he will be on the team. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for watching Smith chase TE's down the field again.
at this point we can get a serviceable RT for Eric Smith, yes. and it makes sense cap wise to dump him. I'd be happy with anyone that isnt WFH.
The $6M - $8M we have in cap space has been 'ear marked'.....must look elsewhere. This is when our decision to pay one non-QB position 20% of our entire annual budget sucks.
