With the college football season started, many of us find great interest in following the individual players as well as the teams in hopes of gaining a greater awareness of the potential prospects that may be available and of use to our beloved New York Jets (other fans feel free to contribute as well, the more the merrier).

The first installment I will post on is perhaps our least needed position but simply an arbitrary starting point. Please if you are not interested in the draft or think we are foolish for thinking about these things this soon, please limit your involvement to reading only. Thanks.

    ---------

This year provides a great crop of Wide Receivers. I think it will be better than last year and reminiscent of the Reggie Williams/Roy Williams class when there was like 7 Receivers taken in the first round. Hopefully more will pan out though.

As stated above, the Jets have a ton of talent at WR, Coles and Cotchery are solid starters and McCarreins, Smith and Stuckey provide different looks. However, with McCarreins perennially on the verge of being traded, our Wide Receivers look more and more like Smurfs, sans the blue tint. Most of our wide receivers are small and shifty, how about getting some size in there for the jump ball? This season should provide some great size between likely first rounders Limas Sweed (6'5"), Adarius Bowman (6'4") and later round prospects like Marcus Monk (6'6"), DJ Hall (6'3"), Mario Urrutia (6'6").

I have always wanted a receiver to go to in the red zone who can overpower Defensive Backs for space in the end zone where the smaller shiftier Receivers are less effective. These are 5 prospects I will be watching intently. These may not be the best 5 receivers in college (see Desean Jackson, Early Doucet and Harry Douglas), but I think they would be the best fits on our team.

    Thoughts?

Where does Kenny Britt stack up in there? He impressed me last year but I don't know nearly enough about him.

Britt's just a sophomore, but I personally think by his draft year he'll be one of the more highly thought of Wideouts in the nation. Great body and speed for his size, frame to add even more weight, and knows how to get open in the middle of the field. Just needs to work on his hands a bit, but nothing serious.

I agree with Rambo about searching for size, though I think that each of the three guys he listed as later round guys could very easily join Sweed and Bowman in Rd 1. Urrutia is just an animal, and I've been a big DJ Hall guy for a while.

DeSean Jackson is the best out there though, he's a level above Sweed, who's in the mold of former Horn Roy Williams, but just isn't as far along.

Limas Sweed is done for the year. I think it is too late to redshirt so he might drop a bit.

He'll end up being a Ernest Wilford type receiver in the NFL...a big body that can jump over pretty much anyone to make the catch.

I don't think he'll run well at the combine, so he'll probably end up slipping into late 2 or early 3.

I'm really high on him though...especially as a red zone threat.

If Schottenheimer is still the OC next year, I would like to see DeSean Jackson become a Jet. I think that he would thrive in this dink and dunk offense that Schotty likes to run...he can make so much happen AFTER the catch. Jackson is also someone to groom behind Coles.

I dont like the idea of spending a 1st or 2nd on a WR, but if Sweed falls to the 3rd, we should definitely scoop him up. More likely though I really like Monk (the best) or Lance Leggett or Keith Brown (a sleeper of mine: 6-3) who are slotted as 3rd-4th round draft picks right now.
