1. We're not getting Dez Bryant, Damian Williams, or even Benn. Those are my top 3 wideouts in the draft, and all should be gone by the time we pick. 2. Notice that none of those 3 are slot WRs. That's because nobody is crazy enough to pick a #3 WR in the first round. 3. Golden Tate is overrated. Yes, I said it. He's an exciting talent obviously, but not a first round one. Hands aren't first round material, route running isn't first round material, and overall polish isn't first round material. Wasn't his teams best WR, and even when Floyd went down the ND offense still had Clausen, Rudolph, the OTHER other WR, and Allen at RB. 4. It won't improve the passing game as much as you think. Sanchez isn't going to to magically jump up levels because there's another WR here. Get him comfortable hitting Edwards and Cotchery outside first (amongst WRs), and let Keller be his safety valve. A first round pick on a #3 WR isn't going to make this offense the great show on turf. Get a star #3 when Sanchez is ready for a star #3. 5. Seriously, we need the DB speed/talent. I made another poster where I listed the Saints depth at CB and it's about 7 deep...and they've got CB depth rather than S depth (which they also have). Jenkins, Greer, Porter, and Young are 4 faster corners that can play corner...Revis, Sheppard, Lowery, Strickland are group that sees a major, major dropoff after Revis. Fuck WR in the first. It really won't do what you may think it will do, and we'll just have a bunch of people bitching about a bust again.
I agree Golden tate doesnt seem to me like an elite NFL lvl player. I just want us to get the best available defensive talent and let rex use him as he pleases whether its a DE LB OR DB.
i agree, i dont want to wr in the first, hell i dont even want to pick in the first (trade down, get more picks) ... however, i do think benn will be there in the second. it seems like a lot of teams are sleeping on him right now and he would def be on of the BPA if hes still there when we pick in rd 2
Reason #6...Stuckey is pretty damn near a prototypical slot WR and he's nothing amazing. He went in the 7th round. Welker was a 6th round pick. Slot WRs can be had later...someone on this board said it...someone like Mike Furrey could handle the job if we were so desperate.
I agree with everything that has been said in this thread. Personally my n.1 choice is adding a slot through FA and my n.2 choice is adding a #3 via a 3rd or 4th round pick (which we have to somehow acquire).
I don't think we take a WR in the first because it's not a first round priority.....plain and simple. Our secondary, dline, oline, and landing a speed rusher....are all above drafting a Wideout in the priority pecking order, IMO.
Wes Welker actually went undrafted, and so did Davone Bess and Lance Moore, who are also very good options in the slot After seeing the success of guys these guys I've realized one very important thing. They've all played in pass-happy, run 'n shoot offenses...offenses that don't really translate over to the NFL. I really think the knowledge of option routes is an important skill for slot receivers - these guys just know how to find an open spot on the field. Here are some other guys that play in similar offenses to the previous guys: Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes Cincinnati's Mardy Gilyard SMU's Emmanuel Sanders Kansas' Kerry Meier Buffalo's Naaman Roosevelt Central Michigan's Antonio Brown Ohio's Taylor Price The Citadel's Andre Roberts I don't know if I'd want Mike Furrey - I'd rather get a younger guy, so Sanchez will have him around for more than a season or two.
Disagreed. Golden Tate will be another Steve Smith/Percy Harvin type player and if he is considered BPA available we will pick him. Look at the Saints..they have a lot of weapons on offense with Colston, Meachem, Henderson, Shockey, Moore, etc. One of Damian Williams, Arrelious Benn (whom I'm not a big fan of), Golden Tate, and Dez Bryant will be there at our pick most likely I think our 1st picks should and will be CB and WR.
We can maybe pick up a slot WR later in the draft, with the return of Leon and some work with Braylon, the offense will be just fine
Now that you mention it Lance Moore will be a FA this year...a guy I wouldn't mind to have. Plays with heart and always makes tough catches and runs good routes..perfect for the slot
Getting back a change of pace back, and developing our #1 receiver will be nice...but we still won't have an option in the slot. Please posters, don't come in this thread and bring up Danny Woodhead and David Clowney.
I completely agree as well. The only thing I can see someone who is pro 'WR in the 1st' saying, has to do with #4. I would imagine people who want a WR in the 1st (I'll reiterate - NOT ME) is not for this upcoming year, but for if Braylon is not with the team the following year.
I'm on the bus for a number of the guys you listed, mostly Freddie Barnes and Antonio Brown. Brown is sleeping big time for most people, he had a great season this year, and you know he's a smart kid (jumping now that LeFeavour's gone). He's maxing out his value, and if the Jets get lucky enough to see him in the 5th I'd do cartwheels. I honestly think he'll end up with a 3rd round value though after workouts.
Golden Tate is a very nice WRs and if we do pick him up I don't think there will be any regrets...I think we have to add a DE if we don't go WR or DB. It is tough to figure out what we will do with Tanny making the calls... who knows where we are going to pick..once he sees talen he likes he goes and gets hit...draft has been hard to call for awhile.
It all comes down to value. Considering most of the other "needs" are for the defensive side of the ball, I would have no problem taking a Golden Tate at 29 rather then reaching for a pass rusher or corner if guys like Kyle Wilson and Brandon Graham are gone.
Tate doesn't have the speed Smith or Harvin possess and isn't the same type of prospect coming out of college.
Hooray! People are finally starting to wake up around here. I was beating this drum alone for a while.
I agree on the part about taking a slot guy in the first round, unless we release Edwards and we have a need for a WR I wouldn't recommend taking one. But I do think Benn could be available when we pick
