DISCLAIMER -> PERSONAL OPINIONS, NO ACTUAL NEWS (so no one gets pissed off) The most popular choices in our mock drafts want the Jets to either go WR or DE in the first round. Looking at our roster and at the contracts of our DL it seems unlikely to me that we bring in a new DE with a high pick and this is why: (premise, I consider 4 DE and 2 NT enough) the 4 DE's: Shaun Ellis -> although 32 I think he still has a year or two left in his tank. I think he is the player on the roster which has been a Jet for the longest time and if we cut him we'll still have around 2.2 million in dead money. So he is staying. Kenyon Coleman -> He is 30 which should mean he's in the prime of his career (for a DL). We have a lot of money invested in him (if we cut him we have 3.7 mill in dead money in 2009 plus another 3.7 in 2010+2011) and for that reason we have to keep him and see how he fits in Ryan new schemes. Plus I understand how now we have all become blitz lovers but we must have someone who is good against the run and, although overpayed, he is our guy. Marques Douglas -> 32 year old veteran who has been brought in because he knows R.Ryans schemes so well. For that reason we will keep him this season... he will show the DLs what to do in the complex Ryan schemes. Plus if he's been brought in I believe it's because Ryan specifically asked Tanny to do it so the won't cut him. Mike DeVito -> he's young (25) with 2 years experience as a Jet and I think he has talent (at least to be a solid reserve). Plus from the few games I've seen him play I think he fits in well in R.Ryan aggressive schemes. As you can see there is really no one you can cut out of these 4 either for dead money consideration or because of other things. Next year, on the other hand, we will be able to cut Ellis (33) without owing him anything, we probably won't need Douglas (33 as well) anymore and Ryan will have decided wether DeVito is worth a roster spot or not. If any changes will occur at the DE position I think it will be next year. This, of course, unless we go with the BPA in the 2nd day of the draft and someone falls to us... in that case I think goodbye DeVito. But it's not like we wanted a DE, it just fell to us.
1. Ellis being 33 next year is a good reason to draft a DE this year. It's much better to bring someone in early and let them learn under Ellis who is the best DE currently on the team and then let him transition in for next year instead of cutting Ellis without a replacement in mind. 2. Marques Douglas is 32 now and is not much more than a back-up. He knows Ryan's system and is solid depth but that doesn't guarantee him a spot on the team. He may very well wind up as training camp fodder. 3. More accurately, you didn't want a DE in the draft. Do you work in the FO? How do you know exactly what they are going after? If Jarron Gilbert or Tyson Jackson happen to be the BPA at 17 or 53 then the Jets should pull the trigger. You make that pick every time for a guy who can make a play on 30 snaps per game. For shits and giggles: Mike DeVito, as much of a feel good story as he is, is also not guaranteed a roster spot next year. He's 25 and solid depth but there's no reason to not upgrade the depth behind the starters. Kenyon Coleman has been a good DE. He hasn't been great. If we can get a better player in that spot next to Ellis than I can't see how Rex Ryan would pass on that opportunity.
No you're mistaken... I would want an upgrade at the DE position. But looking at the salary cap implications of cutting Coleman, the fact Douglas was brought in by Ryan because he knows the system and the fact (and only this one is subjective) that I think DeVito is an ok player I don't see it happening. If we can fit 5 DE in the final 53 man roster I'm all for getting a new DE...
I think we'll be able to find room for another. Your arguments are valid, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ryan wanted one more piece to his defensive puzzle. He's improved both the LBs and DBs now that DL needs one little infusion. Plus, if our draftee really blows it out of the water (cough Gilbert cough) then we can cut DOuglas, no harm done. I have the feeling that Ryan is going to let the young guys play on O and hope they grow up together. I wouldn't be surprised if we went with Pettigrew in the first, because he is a nasty mofo, which is what Ryan wants, or even Sanchez because his value would be so great if he fell to 17, but I think we're definitely looking for a DE in round one and the best fit, to me, seems to be Gilbert.
Did I ever say cut Coleman? If you take what you said about cutting Ellis next year than cutting Coleman at all doesn't really make much sense since we'd be jettisoning two starters instead of one. As for the money problem, Tanny restructures contracts in his sleep so I'm sure that he can get Coleman's cap number down if necessary. Of course that isn't really going to matter anyway since all of the contracts for draft picks are determined by the spot their selected and not by position so if there are salary cap problems we're going to have to trim some salaries down regardless of who we pick. Point being, we have a defensive minded coach who wants to build his team around the running game and his defense and has been rumored to like Shonn Greene in round 2 which means round one is likely going to be a WR or a defensive player and why not start building your defense in the trenches. Bringing in a DE in the draft is not that far-fetched of an idea.
If a DE is the BPA whenever we pick, then we will take a DE. If a DE is not the BPA, then we will not Of course, this is all going on their big board, not ESPN's or NFLN
well actually according to Jets cap, this is the year where the Jets would save the most from cutting Ellis, something around 4 million. I think keeping coleman would be good providing that the Jets draft more of a pass rusher at the other end. That is a MUST
Yeah but if we lose him next year we have NO dead money... I used NYjetscap figures as well.. that guy is a genius ... plus Ellis will be good this year... anyways reading some posts I have come to the idea we'll draft a DE and keep 5 this season (I know i'm saying I was wrong but this is what discussions are all about right?)
