Can someone please explain to me why Mawae was cut? I will not accept the answer that we needed cap space. It really makes no sense to me that people were saying his career will go downhill from here. He has one fluke injury and all of a sudden his career is going downhill? Yea, he is old but in my mind, with a good ol,he is the best center in the league. You only need to go back one year where he was great where he blocked for the league's leading rusher. I feel the same about Martin. He leads the league in rushing and all of a sudden his career is over even though he played on the worst team in football with the worst O line in football, besides the fact he was injured early in week 2?

I agree with the martin part, but not the mawae part. He's too old to be learning new offenses.

There are 4.5 million reasons why he was cut.

Edit: and it's always better to lose someone a year too early than to keep them on a year too long.

So what? Does rebuilding mean get rid of all your old players, regardless of the fact that they are still the best at their position in the entire NFL?

Why? Because he is 35 years old, bicep injury (major injury for OL man), and his cap number is huge and he won't re-do his deal like, martin, coles, chad, and ellis did. had fun, great job...good-bye Kev...later

Mawae is the greatest center in Jets history. He gave them 8 great seasons, 7 of them pro-bowl level. But the man is 35 and coming off a triceps tear. He's also a hold-over from 2 regimes ago so there is no loyalty. It's time to infuse youth into the Jets O-line. Kendall should be gone soon....

Mawae is no longer the best center in football. Hasn't been for a few years now.

It's been 2 or 3 years since Mawae was the best center in the league. He was clearly declining the past couple of seasons.

That said, I will miss his toughness, fire and leadership.

I disagree, it's only been a year. He WAS the best center just a year ago. The only guy that came close was olin kreutz, and he's overrated and doesn't pull as well.

It must have just to save cap space. I can't see any other reason, he would've been a huge asset to 06. Oh well, sign or draft a new center.

    1) He rejected the Jets' offer to renegotiate his contract. He stuck to his guns and wouldn't move.

    2) He's 35 coming off the muscle tear, which, at his age, is probably the start of other injuries.

    3) While I like Mawae, I personally don't think he is what he once was. Take a look at the KC game. They were all over him and Penny like flies on sh*t.

16-0 is a bit of a reach, but I will of course cheer for it. I'm still gonna say 13-3 in 06.
