JETS WELCOME CARROLL Posted by Mike Florio on July 22, 2008, 8:19 p.m. After spending the first part of the offseason signing guys who ended up being big on money, the New York Jets are closing out the offseason by inking a guy who is arguably light on character. And talent. The Jets have announced the acquisition of defensive back Ahmad Carroll, a one-time first-round pick of the Packers. He was the 25th overall selection in 2004, but was cut by Green Bay in 2006 after repeatedly being burned like bacon in a brick oven during a game against the Eagles. Carroll landed in Jacksonville. The Jaguars released him in May 2007 after an arrest on gun and drug (Ecstasy) charges. Out of football in 2007, Carroll played for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League in 2008, starting in 15 of 16 games. To make room on the roster, the Jets dumped rookie free agent Nate Lyles.
Why not? Last I checked, the Jets haven't had a steady #2 cornerback since David Barrett started all 16 in 2004. Might as well bring in all the potential talent you can and let them compete for it. This #2 cornerback spot has been a constant problem and revolving door since Mangini has really took over. It's time to find some stability this season.
Ahmad Carroll is the definition of terrible. My wife is a Packers fan and this guy makes Jason David look like Champ Bailey.
agreed, come on guys, we are looking for somebody to compete and surprise. this guy surely qualifies as needing to be motivated. I know a lot of people wanted Ahmad Batman Carrol during draft time in 04. he has potential. Besides im thinking Barret is a tad overpaid to be a number 4 or 5 cb. if the depth chart shakes out like this, Revis Miller/Poteat loser of the #2 cb battle Lowery Barret/Drew Coleman i mean come on, barret is going to make too much money to be a #5 guys. so if Carrol comes in and wins a #5 job, hip hip hooray for him. barret is likely to be gone come the end of TC i think, unless he miraculously wins the #2 job back.
Damn I wanted this guy so bad when he came out...Thankfully they didn't draft him. His speed is great, would be nice if hr can be on special teams...All the while make Barrett expendable. But that's wishful thinking.
I only remember Carroll from his time in GB and he was just awful. Zero expectations for every contributing on a Sunday.
This guy is awful. I watched many GB games he played in and he got at least one penalty a game for pass interf. because everyone beat him so he had to grab them as they went by. Clearly the coaches watch film so they must know he sucks in coverage. Definately TC fodder.
Carroll was a guy who went to the Pack during a time when they were reaching for DB's left and right in the draft and throwing them into the fire regardless of whether they were ready or not. Carroll was considered very raw when he came out of Arkansas, an likely needed a year or 2 to refine his technique. Unfortunately he was thrown to the wolves by the Pack, which explains alot of his problems. He has a ton of natural skill. Extremely fast and great hips. At best, he surprises and earns a roster spot, adding some major speed and upside to the secondary..at worst, he still cant cover and we cut him 2 weeks into TC. Works for me.
The problem is..too many football fans cant comprehend the notion of player development. They don't understand that for some players, it takes a few seasons and maybe a change of scenery or even a different system for things to really click for them. There are so many things that contribute to a player's performance on sunday. Technique, strength, experience, how they fit in the scheme,ETC. Unfortunately for many, it's easier to just say a player stinks or is a bust..than to factor in things like this.
I agree. When you factor in the gun and drug bust, it's fair to assume that this kid was a major head case in Green Bay and Jacksonville After a year out of the league I suspect his agent has convinced Tangini that "maybe" he has turned his life around, and is now ready to use his physical skills. Very long shot, but you never know. he's worth a look
Maybe a FS prospect as well? Having a safety with that kind of speed that gets to keep the play in front of him... Just saying.
i remember when Caroll came out of school, that he had a ton of potential, but so far hasn't amounted to anything. he and Justin Miller should room together. hopefully this will jump start a more successful career.
anyone remember him in the philly game for god sakes? this is an aweful pickup, and should only last though training camp.
