Newsday, April 30, 2006 Schlegals - "Projected to only get CONSIDERATION on Day 2" (which is nice way of saying he may not have even been drafted) Smith - "Long history of injuries, including torn meniscus in left knee, torn anterior cruciate ligament in right knee and torn rotator cuff in shoulder ... A series of sprains in both shoulders have required surgery." Quote from Smith himself: Was stunned to be picked this early. "I really thought I would be later," he said. "I was getting ready to pack it in and call it a night." My 2 cents: Its fine to pick character guys in the draft, but why reach so far? Both players could have easily been picked late on Day 2.
the sad part about after draft 2 onlineman in the 1st rd.. did you really have to torture by reaching the 3rd rd.. we went from taking the safe picks to to reaching for undrafted free agents.
I am certainly not an apologist for the pick but this link at least has a half-full look on them. http://www.draftdaddy.com/blog/blog.cfm
i dont. i try not bias and sound stupid... thats why D robertson will always be a bust in my book. i will never be happy with just average play from a #4 pick.
Who cares if someone is a reach. Was Logan Mankins a reach at 32 last year? Everyone said he was, yet he turned into a pretty good starter. Y'all are just pissed because we didn't draft some flashy athlete that looks good on paper. Give the front office the benefit of the doubt. Keep in mind if Gabe Watson was actually good he would have been long gone.
please stop comparing smith to makins. Smith is a terrible reach where talking a undrafted free agent in rd 3.. mankins was a potential rd 2 /rd3 guy going late 1st.
What makes you think it's a reach? Based on what Kiper and these other so called experts say? I'm going to go with Mangini's knowledge of the depth on this team and his past experience coaching defensive backs before I believe any shit that these experts say. If they fail in 3 years, then call him a reach.
They drafted Schlegel because they wanted a lunchbucket kind of guy to anchor the Run D on 1st and 2nd down. He's a 2 down LB but he should be very good in that role. 3rd down they'll be in a lot of 3-3-5 with Coleman, Rhodes and probably Eric Smith in as the 3rd safety with coverage responsibility in the middle.
if mangini likes him fine. it doesnt change the fact he was a reach. So if jets draft mangold at #4 . just because mangini likes him. its not a reach? im pretty sure you would have been pissed. Man did you even know who eric smith was or even projected him here before we drafted him?
It doesn't matter. If he's a reach, it can turn out good or bad for us. Why don't you let them play before saying they were a reach in the draft. You don't know. You didn't scout the talent coming out since January. You act like your a draft expert here.
no matter how you wana put it. the guy could turn into a pro bowler the pick was reach because he could be had in later rounds. man im gonna even gonna argue about this. if you feel like he is some kinda SOD more power to you.
spoken like someone who understands football.. The FO is drafting according THEIR blueprint. Not the Fans who think they know what's best.
Schlegel is a 2 down run stopped in a 3-4 D. To win games you need to run the ball, stop the run and have efficient QB play. These themes were addressed with our first 4 picks.
Smith I don't understand. Not a great player, not a terrible one. Couple that with injuries though and I think we probably could've landed him later in the draft. Schlegel I like. Worst case scenario it sounds like he can replace McClover as a special teams linebacker.
And here's your wallpaper. The S-train baby! http://www.osu.edu/download/images/bowlgame/bigpics/fiesta06_10.jpg
thats all i been saying. we didnt need to reach for him. im not labeling the a bust or anything but we didnt need to reach.
Im really not happy with Smith, For no other reason then Ko simpson and Darnell Bing are still on the board right now. Schlegal is fine though, I think he will be pretty solid, he will compete for the other ILB spot i think with chatham.
