There really isn't any speculation regarding the Jets taking an OT with their first pick and I'm just now starting to wonder why. This OT class is pretty good and I think there will be talent available at the end of the first round: Anthony Davis Charles Brown Bruce Campbell Roger Saffold All four of these guys will be gone by our 2nd round pick so why not take one of them with our 1st? Yes, the Jets will need to address their pass rush but I think that can be addressed with our second pick. As far as OT talent after these four, I think there's a big drop. Why not got OT in the 1st and take a DE/OLB in the 2nd?
If an OT is at the top of the Jets draft board at 29 and they feel the value is too good to pass up, he'll be picked. I don't think it's likely, but it's possible.
I really don't see the value at OT being there at 29. It's typically not a good idea to use you're 1st rounder on a RT anyway, especially not in this draft. Although if someone does fall then I wouldn't mind the pick at all.
Just say "no" to Bruce Campbell.......no more fucking workout warriors. I like Iupati and Pouncey....but i just read Peter King's 5 Draft things he thinks....and he's hearing that Pouncey's stock is skyrocketing....could end up being a top 15 pick (sorry NDmick) here's the link (the blurb on Pouncey is #4 in the list) http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/04/16/five.things/index.html?eref=sihp
Bruce Campbell is not as much of a work out worrier that everyone thinks he is. Also we shouldnt take an OT (unless their is no other reasonable choice) because you dont want to select a player in the first round that wont have a more immediate impact their rookie year. At this point I dont see a vacancy at either tackle spot until at least next season, maybe even letter
Yeah so in order to make a more fluid transition next year if one of our vets leaves wouldn't it be wise to draft a guy a year before? Plus we need the depth for this year.
This. Woody is 32 and likely done with the Jets after this season. I would rather spend a high pick on his replacement now rather than throw a rookie in their to go through his growing pains while Sanchez is still only in his 3rd season.
I think thats kind of a down approach to looking at it. I understand what your saying and obviously a first round tackle having spent a year learning the blocking schemes etc does help. However, first round players (even low first round) are first rounders because of their impact on your team. We arent in a situation where Woody is just so god awful that if we did draft a tackle in the first, he would sub in for Woody on a frequent basis. If your talking about fluid transitions, thats the time you talk about taking a late round pick and developing him, a tackle with a plus tool or someone who is a few steps away from becoming an elite player. Its not just like a random thing that Robert Turner is still on the team, the coaching staff obviously see's some potential in him. Now he could just as equally blow up and be terrible but we dont know that
Starting OTs drafted between picks 20-60: 2009 Michael Oher - Round 1 - Pick 23 Eben Britton - Round 2 - Pick 7 Phil Loadholt - Round 2 - Pick 22 2008 Sam Baker - Round 1 - Pick 21 Duane Brown - Round 1 - Pick 26 2007 Joe Staley - Round 1 - Pick 26 2006 Winston Justice - Round 2 - Pick 7 Andrew Whitworth - Round 2 - Pick 23 2005 Michael Roos - Round 2 - Pick 9 There are a few guys who were projected as OTs but moved to OGs that I did not include in this list. I was actually surprised to see that there really weren't many OL picked during this time of the draft that aren't starters. I feel like this shows that historically there is starting OT caliber talent late in the first round.
He is the textbook definition of a workout warrior. Based only on his game tape he is a fifth rounder if he is lucky, yet he is being talked about as a first rounder.
per rotoworld If i hear this motherfucker's name called when the #29 pick is up....I'm going on a shooting spree.
yeah, all the prospects I truly love all had their stock rise to far for the jets to get them. Oh well.
I agree depth at tackle is scary, more so than in the interior, but like Rhodesfan16 said, a first round pick should make an impact this year. Even though we are stronger going into this draft than we have been for years, we still need an impact player at #3 cb, a pass rusher, a DE and maybe a safety. Hopefully our round 1 and 2 picks fill two of these needs.
One injury on the Oline and our first round tackle would be making an impact. I don't think we need an Olineman regardless of value - but if the price is right...
If it's Anthony Davis, it's an absolute yes, anyone else no. I think the Jets would want a mauler to replace Woody, and those guys really don't fit the bill. They're all more athletic/technique based LT types.
