As more and more reports come out, my faith in the honesty of our CS/FO come into question. You guys know just as well as me, that every report that's come out this Off Season is how impressed Ryan is with So & So, or how much Woodenbaum like Mr. So & So. We saw it with Ratliff and Clemens. The weeks leading up to the draft, all they could talk about is how much faith they have in the 3 QB's that we're already here, and how they would pick out of them. Now the reports about Westerman. It seems like Rex can't say a bad thing about anybody. I'm not being paranoid, or upset with this. Just venting, and hoping that I'm not the only one seeing that the Jets Brass can't say a bad thing about anybody, no matter what there motives are. In other words....... Stop The Sugar Coating! Thoughts guys?
Do you mean "Why is everyone so optomistic?" What do you expect for them to say? Rex- "I can't believe that I took this job, the team sucks. We have no depth at LB, our QB's are questionable, at best- Sanchez didn't even play two full seasons as a starter. I myself question why we took RB in the 3rd, especially when a guy like Gilbert was still on the board. Our kicking game sucks- we still don't have a punter. I am sure that we aren't going to fill the seats in the new stadium because the whole PSL thing stinks to me, and I think that Woody Johnson is a terrible owner." Better?
Mangini did the same thing up until the end. When the press asks you what you think of a player that is still on the roster..you can't say "He sucks and he'll be moving furniture for a living oncce june 1st rolls around". The same holds true for the QB position. Publicly bashing your current roster QB's is a HORRIBLE idea..ask the unemployed John gruden about that. This is all part of the media game
What do you want them to say? "We've really put together a terrible team here" or "Man, after bring out there today these guys are looking average at best". I think this time of year you have to be optimistic and try to create some kind of a buzz with your fans and the media.
I understand that, but it doesn't change that we have to take what Ryan says with a salt shaker, and that is somewhat disappointing.
Yes, I'd much rather Ryan said "Westerman is a bumbling fucktard out there. No wonder he wasn't drafted" Before the draft, it would have been better and more constructive to tell the media ,"We're going to try like hell to trade up for Mark Sanchez, since our current quarterbacks are obviously hippo shit". Seriously, though, this is the time of season when everything is sunshine and rainbows for every team. It's natural to focus on the positives of every player, in order to build confidence in said player, and goodwill and optimism in the fanbase. Like you, I think most fans take training camp news with at least a little grain of salt.
Exactly. As fans, we wan't to keep up with camp. Especially those of us who live too far to actually be there and see it ourselves. But when the only thing that comes out of anybody's mouth is, "I was really impressed with this kid." Or "I think he's a phenominal player." It makes you wonder. Especially when you have Rex Ryan calling guys like Bryan Thomas impressive. Or hear Rex recite basically what Tannenbaum says verbatim to the media. By all means, I'm not saying to come and say this team is shit, you guys are wayyyyy over exagerrating it. But it would be nice if he came out and said, "Hey, there's some things that this guy needs to work on. Here they are, etc etc. But we're working with him, he's been improving etc etc." Not just "Man! This guy is good!"
Well but right now Ryan doesn't know that. It's not after 5 days of practice that you understand if a player picks up the new schemes or he doesn't and stuff like that... All they are doing right now is getting the players to focus in on the new season and get their body and mind ready. When things will get serious (TC) and people will get cut you'll see Ryan criticizing people... right now it of no use and it's impossible to do.
When was the last time a coach took a job at any level above a gut rehab and had anything but positive things to say during the pre-camp period? It's just what it is, a new guy has to get a good feel for the lay of the land before he starts to talk about what needs to change. I'll bet that in a year Ryan will be talking a lot about the need to get more pressure on the QB, however it's hard to see what else is wrong with the Jets at the moment. Not having a solid QB probably went away when Sanchez was drafted.
Its called positive reenforcement.... you want him to come in and be like you suck you suck your cut i hate you fuck you etc... trust me with the little thing like that they will build self confidence and start to believe in themselves and i bet you the swagger of the team is totally different from mangini... he let the guys hang loose and that will carry over to the field.. not have a tight militant camp and practice and you still dont win a thing.. this is a positive thing trust me!!! the players are all buying in...
Actions speak louder than words. We'll find out what these guys are really about September through February.
I remember an article a few days ago regarding Greene- Ryan had a few good things to say and then made note that passes were popping off of him (i.e. he wasn't catching the damm ball). Look a little deeper- you'll see that not everything is roses and sunshine.
Rex is telling the public all these wonderful things about all the players. I'm sure during practice and behind the scenes he is doing his job and dishing out criticism as a head coach should and is expected to do. He was a bit critical of Ratliff during the VOA's. Maybe that is why he is now a Cleveland Brown. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/04/clemens_outguns_ratliff_again.html
first of all, I've heard him say that Sanchez and maybe two other rookies look good in this camp. he publicly told Brad Smith to step up, due to his athleticism, so I don't get where Ryan has been completely optimistic when he has put a fire under at least one ass before any minicamps began. At least with the media knowing about it. Its fucking May 4th, there is no annoyance or pessimism in football because everyone is having a clean slate to work with and the pressure isn't on anyone because its the offseason. Wait 3 months and you'll hear Ryan explain how he'd like to see more from a certain player.... wait for the upset loss that should never of happened and let's see how upset he becomes. If he has any bit of his father in him he's not going to be robotic like Mangini. Its called patience, and its seems to be non existent in sports.
I think the CS has actually been relatively honest. They mentioned, with no provocation, that Shonn Greene is ahving trouble catching the ball and that Pizzoti is overthinking it. I thinkwe'll see, once the offense and defense have been completely installed, more criticism of people's play. Give it time, is what I'm saying, there'll be some dissing.
I think we all understand, as I said previously, that that is the way it is. But that does not make it any less unfortunate that Ryan is just the same. Why bother saying any of that sort of thing if it has no real credibility? And more to the point, why bother listening and trying to understand what is going on? I am no less cynical about it than you are. In fact look at all the speculation on these boards - how often do we attempt to support what is really a guess about what is going to happen by referring to some statement that is what the OP was talking about, not to mention rumors, speculations by beat writers, or even something more obscure? It's the nature of discussion boards like this. But that doesn't mean it's a great thing when you hear the CS talking about players and realize it's almost all BS.
