They've taken two guys on the lines in the last 8 years. McCargo in 2006 and Williams in 2002. Why do the Detroit Lions suck so badly? They've taken one guy on the lines in the last 8 years. Backus in 2001. Why do the Oakland Raiders suck so badly? Two guys on the line in the past 8 years. Gallery in 2004 and Brayton in 2002. This is not freaking rocket science. Why do teams keep taking skill position players in the first round and neglecting their lines?
Okay......who should we have drafted for the lines? We traded for Stroud and have McCargo, Schobel, and Kelsay for our defensive front 4! We already have a pro bowl LT in Jason Peters and a very good RT in Langston Walker......so are you saying we should have drafted a tackle when are biggest needs are CB and WR? We drafted the best CB in the draft.......get a clue bro!
Like that is an achievement... How many playoffs have your team been to in the last five years? I believe Jets made it two years ago?
ya the bills suck. gholston will run over ryan clady everytime we face you. we wil beat you guys both times this year
I thought you guys had a great draft so far. Not taking a WR in the first was one of the smartest first round moves of the day. You guys are in the same boat as us, have to stop the Pats passing attack.
The Bills actually had a good draft on paper. Hardy and McKelvin can produce. They play us hard every game every season. I don't put anything past this team..... except a playoff berth :rofl2:
It's Jason Peters, already one of the top OTs in the league... And we've drafted 8 OL or front 7 games with 20 picks under Tangini. We've went OL or front 7 with 4 of the 8 first or second round picks they've made. And those teams are all on the way up...weird. BTW: The Bills have far from ignored their lines. They did exactly what we did this offseason last offseason. Dockery got big money at G and Walker got big money at T. Chris Kelsay got a big contract to play DE.
You don't typically draft lineman in the first round, and if you do it speaks to your staff's inability to develop from within. The Colts stellar offensive line, the league's gold standard the last decade, featured ONE first rounder. The Bills have sucked for a number of reasons. -X-
I think we as Jets fans can attest to failed attempts at grooming lineman to take over the job. So i don't mind taking them in the 1st round, given that they'll be on the team for 8+ years, like Brick and Mangold. Faneca was a 9th overall pick as well. The Colts are an exception for drafting players in late round or picking up UFAs.
Yeah, that is mere coincidence, rather than an actual correlation. There has been a rule in the draft for the last few years that you don't draft lineman, unless they are elite prospects. This latest draft has broken all conventional wisdom.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing. I'm just posting facts. Let's look at their Super Bowl teams and see where the linemen were drafted. Offensive lineman who were regular starters in at least one season from 1990-93: Will Wolford, 1st round, Bills, 1986 Jim Ritcher, 1st round, Bills, 1980 Kent Hull, not drafted John Davis, 11th round, Oilers, 1987 Glenn Parker, 3rd round, Bills, 1990 Howard Ballard, 11th round, Bills, 1987 John Fina, 1st round, Bills, 1992 Defensive lineman who were regular starters in at least one season from 1990-93: Leon Seals, 4th round, Bills, 1987 Jeff Wright, 8th round, Bills, 1988 Bruce Smith, 1st round, Bills, 1985 Phil Hansen, 2nd round, Bills, 1991 Regular starters at the skill positions: Jim Kelly, 1st round, Bills, 1983 James Lofton, 1st round, Packers, 1978 Don Beebe, 3rd round, Bills, 1989 Thurman Thomas, 2nd round, Bills, 1988 Keith McKellar, 9th round, Bills, 1987 Pete Metzelaars, 3rd round, Seahawks, 1982 Andre Reed, 4th round, Bills, 1985 Jamie Mueller, 3rd round, Bills, 1987 Bill Brooks, 4th round, Colts, 1986
The Bills biggest problem may be the quarterback position. They haven't been right since Kelly hung it up.
As long as they keep the ball away from Losman, they're fine. He's been stinking it up for long enough. What's that? They stick him in and he throws one good pass? Doesn't matter - Leave Trent Edwards in. He's good, and only has the potential to get better.
Really the Bills biggest problem of the last decade is that their lines have been iffy. Everybody has pushed the Bills around and the effect has been that they've been unable to establish any consistency in their performance. They've periodically signed free agents (Sam Adams) who have stabilized them for a season or two and then the performance has shot way up, but without high drafts in the trenches the effect has always been momentary. They remind me a hell of lot of the Jets in all of the above, with the difference being that the Jets great free agent pickup, Kevin Mawae, contributed for the better part of a decade before he finally wore out. The only real difference between the Jets and the Bills over the last decade is Mawae sitting in the middle of the offensive set for so long.
Look at the Packers line - mid round picks that practiced for a season or two and eventually became starters. That's the smart way to build an OL. Jets had to draft 2 first round OL in 2006 because we had let the line go for so long. Old players broke down and with few (if any) draft picks. Herm really left the OL in a bad way.
