Why are the Jets so bad? Well the common adage is that you build your team through the draft. If you look at the Jets return over the first and second rounds it is mind boggling how often they got it wrong - assuming it takes at least 2 years to judge a class - looking at first and second round picks where you expect to get at least a decent long term starter and if picking in the top 10 you want an all-pro: 2021 - Wilson, Tucker, Moore - 1 decent and 2 bad (and Tucker seems to have serious injury issues so is looking like a bust) 2020 - Becton, Mims - 2 busts 2019 - Williams - good 2018 - Darnold - bust (plus cost three 2nd round picks to trade up!) 2017 - Adams, Maye - 2 disappointing picks (though the Adams trade at least was good) 2016 - Lee, Hackenburg - 2 busts 2015 - Williams, Smith - one disappointing pick (was supposed to be the best player in the draft) and one bust 2014 - Pryor, Amaro - 2 busts 2013 - Milliner, Richardson, Smith - from a Jets perspective 2 busts and a disappointment 2012 - Coples, Hill - 2 busts So out of 20 first and second round picks the Jets have had over the last decade they have hit a winner once - and bear in mind the majority of these were high picks in the first round). Still at least their success rate in the draft is matching their success rate on third down conversions.
I'd have to go digging but I saw an article, not all that long ago, that had the Jets as the 2nd worst drafting team over the last 20 years. Interestingly enough San Francisco was the worst. Thing is San Francisco has a competent head coach and the Jets have shit...
It's the drafting combined with the inability to ever think for ourselves and hire an innovative, smart coach. We basically just ping pong back and forth and hope we get a good one. We go from defensive coach to offensive coach to defensive coach and get fooled by flashy slogans, catchphrases, and buzzwords during the interview process. We don't know what a good football mind actually looks like so we're completely incapable of hiring one. We hire guys who say the right things or look the part. We don't consider objective evidence. We don't look at league trends or what other successful teams have done. Forget reinventing the wheel, we are unable to even figure out that maybe we should just copy the blueprints of other teams who have successfully rebuilt themselves quickly. We are light years away from anything approaching a cohesive, smart strategy for building a sustainable winner.
It is Woody. An owner who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He never had to work hard in his life. He is just an old baby who doesn’t have a passion for winning. Fuck him.
The Owners are incompetent Johnson and Johnson would be long bankrupt and sold if Woody was the actual CEO Of course, the Board of Directors lock the doors without the J brothers when important decisions are made . Only Jet fans are that stupid to support Jets playtoy they own
The short answer is that they can’t figure out the QB position and it’s hard to win in the league without a good one. Winning without a passable QB is next to impossible. The long answer would need to dive into why they can’t find a QB. I think a lot of it stems from constantly hiring defensive minded head coaches and or coaches who don’t have a track record of working with young quarterbacks.
? We've had plenty of good defenses since we last made the playoffs 13 years ago. The constant is that we've basically never had a good offense, and we're usually bottom 5-10. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.
The owner's name is Robert Wood Johnson. He could just go by Robert Johnson or Rob Johnson or Bob Johnson or Robby Johnson or Bobby Johnson. Instead he voluntarily goes by Woody Johnson. A man that stupid and self-flagellating isn't going to run a winning football team.
Not true. Rob Johnson threw a couple touchdowns in his day. Woody builds teams that are allergic to throwing touchdowns.
Honestly, I’m trying to find the likeness amongst fans. It would seem being a Jets fan is some sort of torture or lesson for us as fans. What did we do to deserve this?
I’ve often looked at blaming the owner being silly given how separated from football operations it seems like they would and should be. But there’s no denying that this is a giant clusterfuck because of Woody. @BrowningNagle pointed out the sales force of 70+ people they have on staff and the 4 football analytics guys to match that and nothing else needs to really be said. As long as we keep letting Hymie run the show instead of a football VP we’re in trouble.
When you have that long a period of virtually uninterrupted futility, regardless of GMs and CS, there's only one common thread running through it all: the owner. We don't know exactly how and in what ways Woody exercises his control, but the results of that are clear. Until he sets his ego aside and hires people who will run the team - and tell him to fuck himself when he tries to interfere - there will be no change. We had the same situation - with about the same ratio of success - during Hess, but as he neared the "final end zone" he finally got desperate enough to hire Parcells and let him run things. And then came Woody...
