Take away Joe Namath, Richard Todd, Ken O'Brien, Vinny Testervede, & Chad Pennington, who is the next best QB the Jets have ever had: A. Matt Robinson B. Pat Ryan C. Tony Eason D. Ray Lucas E. Rick Mirer F. Browning Nagle G. Jeff Blake H. Brooks Bollinger I. Quincy Carter J. Ricky Ray K. Boomer Esiason L.Glen Foley M. Neil O'Donnell N. Al Woodall O. Frank Reich P. Babe Parilli Q. Kliff Kingsbury R. Jay Fiedler S. Other
Ryan (because he has a playoff win under his belt). Boomer Robinson (he gave me some great thrills in 78 after such a long drought as a fan) The rest can be totally forgotten.
Boomer is the only one who was a starter for more than a few games or year so he would have to be the next one. I might actually put him higher than Chad or Vinny whose place on the list is only secured by a championship game appearance.
Babe Parilli was the holder for Jim Turner when he set the NFL points record in 1968, so it's got to be him, right?
Boomer was player of the month in Sept 93, what more can you ask for? At least he was a starter a few years, 93-95, although I am guessing much of 95 is a painful blur to him.
I always had a bit of a soft spot for Lucas. Couldn't stand Boomer, but I have to give him credit where it's due I guess. I still can't stand him and his announcing puts my teeth on edge.
The real question is: Will the draft, free agency, or the 2006 season produce a new QB that jumps into the top 5?
Ray Lucas led that impressive 8-8 rebound season for Bill Parcells, and Pat Ryan and Babe Parelli were awesome backups, but Boomer was the obvious best of the rest.
Wesley was the man, but I don't agree about Boomer. Not his fault that our kicker got the yips, but the man could not get us in the playoffs. Also, Boomer was the QB most responsible for the Fake Spike Fiasco that eventually cost Carroll his job. WIth the Jets leading 24 -6 in the 2nd half, Boomer tried to "out Marino" Dan, and threw a reckless interception that woke up the Dolphins, and tilted the field against the Jets.
It's pretty sad when Todd and Pennington are part of the "Big 5" in Jet QB History...isn't it? Boomer was the best QB among them, Ryan the clutch guy, Robinson the big play guy. I think it's a toss up between JJ Jones and Steve Joachim personally! lol!
However, I believe Ray Lucas was one win short of making #2 on this list. At the end of the 99 season, the Jets were a machine. Lucas was making big plays with his arm and legs, Curtis was running great, and Belicheck had the defense humming. There was no stopping them and had they made the post-season tournament, (Music City Miracle notwithstanding) I believe they would've at least made the Championship Game, maybe even the Super Bowl. And we all know what Belicheck was able to do to the Rams in the 2001 SB. Unfortunately, we'll never know. The Jets were unable to get the one more win they would need to get into the playoffs. They couldn't hang on to the lead in the season opener vs. the Pats after losing Vinny; Parcells waited to long to give Lucas the Ball, and when he did, it took Ray a few games to get settled (a costly INT inside the 5 yard line cost us a game vs. The Colts); the team suffered a disgusting defeat to the Giants (why I still hate Kerry Collins); and so as I stood there cheering on the Jets as they crushed Seattle in the season finale, I just thought, what a waste.
Boomer is 1, or 6 in this case. Lucas had too many turnovers early on. Actually, here's a new one. Tom Tupa! He relieved Vinny and threw a TD pass to Keyshawn that Rick Mirer couldn't have made in his dreams.
Tupa's probably got a higher QB rating than Mirer. Although Mirer also did make one great TD throw to Keyshawn--a 20 yard laser down the middle that hit Keyshawn in stride. That play salvaged a miserable, restless, listless game against the Cards on a bitterly cold day during the 99 season.
