I'm seeing a lot of healthy debate about who should be the pick at 4. I just did a mock draft on TDN where this situation played out and I wanted to see what TGG would do in this scenario. First 3 picks went: Jags: Evan Neal OT, Alabama Lions: Aidan Hutchinson EDGE, Michigan Texans: Kyle Hamilton S, Notre Dame Might not be a very realistic scenario but I also don't think it's out of the realm of possibility depending on how Hamilton grades out with the Texans. For argument's sake, lets also say that a trade down is not an option in this scenario. Would you take Ikem Ekwonu, Kayvon Thibodeaux, or someone else in this situation? I plan to keep this poll active and will post the %'s periodically to see how they might change as we get closer to draft day.
At this point knowing what I know of these two players - not a great deal - I'd take Thibodeaux. We can probably get a decent G/T later, but not as likely getting an Edge of his caliber. But again, I haven't done any in-depth research on the players so there may be an Edge that is even better than Thibodeaux who might actually be there with a later pick.
With QB and LT already on the team, the next most important player is Edge. But, if (S) Kyle Hamilton is still on the board, we have to be careful. Do we pass on the next Troy Palumala for an average pass rusher? I mean, it's entirely possible we already HAVE a top pass rusher (time will tell) which would put even more emphasis on possibly taking Kyle (I know your play list already has Kyle taken, which is a good possibility). I just don't know!!!
I'm confused why Kayvon Thibodeaux keeps dropping in mock drafts. He was the assumed #1 pick for most of the year. He is clearly a great pass rusher. What is the knock on him? He didn't give it his all last season? I get it but he also knew he was locked up to be a top draft pick. If he falls to 4, I would run to the podium and draft him.
Thibodeaux may be there at 10 with the way he's been dropping in some mocks. I think the pick will be Neal or Ekwonu at 4 and Defensive BPA at 10
Edge at #4. Hutchinson if he is available. Thibodeaux if not. If both have gone in the first three selections I will be sorely pissed off and my draft strategy is blown. I have seen mock drafts which have Detroit taking Hutchinson at #2 which is quite possible. I've seen others which then have The Jets passing on Thibodeaux which I just cannot see happening. The logic being this is clearly a need and is a premium position in terms of draft value. There's no way both of those don't go in the first four picks.
What would you do if Hutchinson, Thibodeaux and Neal are gone with the first 3 picks? Where do the Jets go at 4? I think that is most likely right now. And it is a tough decision. Likely Ikem or Hamilton.
For the record, I agree with everyone so far, I'd go with Thibodeaux over Ekwonu or anyone else at 4. I think in this scenario, which I agree is the most likely scenario as if right now, I'd take Ekwonu. Becton has question marks around him and Fant is only under contract for 1 more year. Best case, Becton improves on his rookie year form and solidifies either LT or RT, Ekwonu fills the other spot, and Fant goes back to his back-up swing OT role. Then we let Fant hit FA in 2023. I also think JD will be proactive and address S in FA so my opinion might change on this depending on how FA shakes out.
As of right now, on 2/24/2022, Thibodeaux has 100% of the votes. I thought that he would be the leader but I am surprised it's unanimous so far!
Hamilton the Safety. But this is not the scenario I want as we'd then have to take BPA Edge at #10 and that's where I want a wideout.
He’s not going to be available at 4, mock drafts mean absolutely nothing. KT is going to be a stud pass rusher and might even go number be taken over Hutchinson. What impresses me about him is his ability to set the edge, even though he can get to the QB as a pass rusher. He has very little to refine as a pro and is going to make huge strides as a pro. He has been incredibly consistent and impacts how teams scheme against him at the college level. I would be crazy happy if he fell to Jets!
The Becton situation makes this decision difficult. Normally, the pick would be KT, since we desperately need help at Edge and we haven't drafted one early since Gholston. I don't know if the negative rumors about KT are true or not. I want to think that Becton is working his ass off, and will come back in great shape and play like I thought he would prior to the draft. I'm sure that JD has probably been in contact with him and/or Duke Manyweather and has a greater handle on the situation than any of us. How Lawson and Huff are doing healthwise, could also play a big factor with JD. If Lawson's rehab isn't progressing well, then JD may be forced to take KT, and then draft an OT at #10 or in the 2nd round. Like Colorado, knowing what little I know now, I'd want to go with KT, but would probably go with Ekwonu due to the potential of Becton not coming back in shape and/or not playing well, and the rumors about KT. If I knew for certain that Becton was going to be in shape and play at a high level, I'd defintely take KT unless I knew or believed the rumors about him to be true. I'm sure an interview with him at the Combine will help JD in his decision making. The nice thing is, however is that there are other very good, if not excellent Edge prospects in this draft. Even if we miss out on KT or JD opts to draft Ekwonu over him, there is still Jermaine Johnson, David Ojabo, George Karlaftis, Arnold Ebiketie, Kingsley Enagbare, Cam Thomas, Boye Mafe, Myjai Sanders, Nik Bonitto, Sam Williams, and some lesser prospects in Deangelo Malone, Josh Paschal, Tyreke Smith and others. If worse came to worse and they missed on the Edges they liked, they could play JFM at Edge exclusively this season, and if he doesn't fare well there, draft an Edge in 2023 and move JFM back to DT. JD may also sign a veteran Edge like Harold Landry, or Haason Reddick, or Derek Barnett. For the purposes of this poll, I'm going to assume that Becton is going to come back in great shape and win the LT job and that the Jets will re-sign LDT. Therefore, I'm going to vote KT since I really want to add an elite Edge, but in real life, I probably would be strongly tempted to take Ekwonu so that I know the OL will be in solid shape.
If the staff truly don’t believe in Becton anymore, fine, go OT. But if they think he can turn it around, you don’t have to spend the 4th pick on an insurance policy who might just be a guard
is this the thread where everyone who doesnt really watch nfl football tells us what they think about guys they didnt really watch play, definitely didnt watch practice will do what? sheesh this is worse than mel kiper. at least he tries and does some research.
We need to start spreading rumors that he failed a drug test or got caught with kiddie porn! That's how it works, right?
I think I'd lean towards KT but for me it's pretty even between him and Ekwonu. Pass rush we just haven't spent the resources needed
Yeah well when you make it a choice between him and Ikem Ekwonu everyone's going to say Thibodeaux. Not sure why you didn't make it a choice of the top 5 prospects to this point but I digress. I chose Thibodeaux but he scares me. Seems like the Jets never end up with the sure thing generational guy. We always go with the "still raw but if he can put it all together sky's the limit" guy. To me that's Thibodeaux but I'm desperate to watch a fierce pass rush. Hoping with Q, Lawson, Huff, JFM something like Thibs can pick it up quick (if he even falls)
