Good old Shea... good old football. I was at that game, but only remember the fight vaguely. Thing is, as clueless as this franchise has been for eons, they've been instrumental in changing the NFL. It was the Jets winning Supe III that instigated the merger between the AFL & NFL. And on a lesser note, it was the Jets, who allowed Gastineau to do his sack dance (he was the first), which is now pretty tame compared to all the over-the-top celebrating that goes on now. The Jets are trailblazers .
Looking at it now, the way it went down in the film would be legal today because Gastineau had turned away from Ferragamo and did his dance off to the side. That's not to say that he never danced over a guy he had sacked but that difference was institutionalized in the rule as a result of Gastineau's habits. I think if that play happened the same way today the sacker would be in the clear and the guy who went after him after the play would eat the fifteen yards.
It was a wild game. Dickerson ran 85 yards for a TD one of his top 3 personal highlights. The Jets ran a blocked FG back for a TD. Walker had a great game. The brawl of course …. Todd fined for being caught on CBS cameras sticking his middle finger at a fan …. and the game went to OT where the Jets finally won.
I like how Summerall says "Maybe a while before he celebrates again" Sent from my SM-S908U using Tapatalk
I remember watching that game while here in LA. Jackie Slater is a local sportscaster here... he's awful.
Remember this game well I hated Gastineau in the moment, his fate was sealed forever after Jan 4, 1987 But you forget that he was great AS fore Shea, it was a dump, but it was our dump
SBIII didn’t actually instigate the merger. SBIII more or less solidified the idea that the AFL teams would be competitive, and the idea would work. Merger negotiations started well before SBIII, and an agreement was in place by 1966. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL–NFL_merger#The_merger_agreement
