Pretty simple. If all three (and there's a good chance they all will be) were available at #18, who would you take and why?
Cooks, and I'm not looking back. He's got the skills, speed and production that all translate to the next level regardless of where they line him up. Plug him right into the lineup day 1.
The guy with the size and the resume is Marqise Lee. Cooks has the resume but he's 5'10" and 189 lbs. Beckham is 5'11 and 198 but has never been a #1. Evaluating prospects is an imperfect science however one thing that is abundantly clear is that if you have two guys who are similar prospects the guy with the better production is likely the better bet. If you have two guys who are similar prospects the bigger guy is generally the better bet. It's not hard and fast either way but those are two pretty good rules of thumb. Lee has the size advantage over Cooks and the production advantage over Beckham. He's the best fit of the 3 if you are looking for somebody to come in and play X for you at a high level.
My avatar. The kid, I think the stars are just aligned to grip this guy and plug him in as one of our top receivers. Lee knows all about the WCO, he's been HIGHLY productive in college - this kid has a warrior mentality, I want someone like that on the Jets.
Talk about even split (3 votes for each at the time I write this). I went with Beckham Jr. I don't really know why to be honest, mostly going off of highlights at this point. If Evans or Ebron fell to us though I would take them first, we need some guys with size.
He's 6'4" runs a sub 4.4 and won't be 23 years old for a few more weeks, he's basically the same age as these rooks. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a better career than Beckham, Lee, or Cooks. Cooks by the way is someone who is going to be a project he can't run a good route and needs major work. You don't just plug and play just cause a guy had speed. I'm more comfortable hoping Stephen hill realizes his potential than counting on a guy like Cooks (likely a 2-3 year project). Rookie WRs don't just come in and produce at a high level .... It's extremely rare! Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I haven't seen any scouting reports on Cooks that claim he is a poor route runner. Its actually just the opposite. His biggest weakness is his size but plenty of others have overcome that such as Steve Smith and Desean Jackson. Its certainly no guarantee of success but its also not a guarantee of failure. The dude is explosive and caught a shit ton of passes in college.
Are you saying this because you believe it or because you are constantly harping for the Jets to draft Dennard at 18
I don't see where anyone claimed that Cooks is a poor route runner, but if someone did, and the scouting reports I've read are accurate at all, they have no clue what they're talking about. According to everything I've read about him, that is one of his strengths. In fact, I think he's supposed to be one of the best route runners in the draft/
It's Cooks for me hands down and not even close. Aside from Watkins, I like Cooks better than any other WR in the draft.
Absolutely not. Im saying this bc I dont believe the Jets need to take a WR just to take one. I'm also thinking about the fact that wide receivers who drop out of the top 10 picks have an enormously high bust rate. That's a fact. It's one of the most difficult positions to project NFL success. I've said numerous times that if someone with top 10-12 caliber falls such as Mike Evans or TE Ebron, I'm all for it, so I don't have anything against the Jets drafting a WR but with these 3 it's a crap shoot. It is more likely that 2 of them will be busts and 1 may have a solid career as opposed to 2 out of these 3 going on to many pro bowls etc .... These are just the odds. There's a reason why Lee, Cooks, and Beckham are not considered top 15 picks. In my opinion, bc the draft is "deep" at wr (another projection which might be untrue as the last "deep" WR class produced only one good player), they are better off filling a need with a better player with more upside and less likely to be a bust. Yes Dennard is currently my favorite .... I'm allowed to change my mind. But I also like: Dee Ford CJ Mosely Taylor Lewan Morgan Moses Calvin Pryor Haha Clinton-Dix I would prefer any of these highly regarded prospects over this mediocre WR trio and then take a Donte Moncrief or Jace Amaro in round 3 And regarding Stephen Hill ... I throw him into this convo beccause again .... The kid is only 22 years old!!!!! Will he make the pro bowl, I wouldn't bet on it but come on he spent his first year under Tony Sporano, came from a college offense where he ran basically 1 route (a go route) and I thought showed some very good things last year before being demolished in the Tenn game. Reports said he wasn't the same all season after the concussion .... Which for anyone who has had a concussion makes sense. Jets fans have given up on this kid way too soon. He's 22 years old!!! It's freakin crazy man. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I have to find where I read it, but I definitely came across an article or tweet or something where a scout says multiple NFL coaches are quoted as saying that Cooks needs to learn route running concepts and consider him a "project". I will search for and post source when I get home later tonight. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I don't understand the fascination of Stephen Hill... The guy can't do the one thing that is fundamental to playing the WR position: Catch
Thank you for posting this, you provided me to illustrate a great point. As fans, in general, we are pretty stupid as a whole with our comments and scouting reports. This comment and common theory amongst Jets fans is one of the dumbest around because it's so blatantly wrong. In his rookie year, Stephen Hill had a very high drop rate of 10.6. Very high indeed, but actuallly Jimmy Graham posted a 10.4 and Aaron Hernandez (pre murder) posted an even higher 10.8. Yet we wpuldnt associate the dropsies with Graham. Now heres where it gets interesting ... In his 2nd year, 2013 ..... Stephen Hill had a drop rate of ....... 1.7!!!!! The kid dropped 1 pass in 58 targets last year but yet Jets fans are blatantly ignorant to the fact. Stephen Hill ... At age 22 .... Improved with his hands by leaps and bounds .... Compare that with the following drop rates from 2013: Brandon Marshall: 7.3 Wes Welker: 9.0 Calvin Johnson: 5.1 DJax: 2.4 And this one I love. Everyone's pre draft crush from last year: Tavon Austin ... In his rookie year ..... 10.1!!! Give the kid a break man you ppl are so misinformed sometimes it's ridiculous.
